The win is the seventh in a row for Saint John and gives them a three-point lead over the Cataractes for first place in the league. TORONTO -- The Toronto Maple Leafs stood pat Wednesday, deciding that the cost to make a move on trade deadline day was too much. "We would have been hurting ourselves long-term and we werent prepared to do that," Dave Nonis, Torontos senior vice-president and general manager, told reporters. Nonis, who said he made plenty of calls to test the waters, said the asking prices were high and the talent on offer limited. The sense he got was there might be more movement come the summer. "There wasnt a lot available in general," he said. "I think deals that changed the look of your team seemed to happen at the draft." Nonis acknowledged that his team had been up and down, putting the onus on the Leafs to return to their winning ways before the Olympic break. "If we do, we should be fine. And if we dont, then were going to have some difficulties," he said. "But its not a bad team. I think weve got a good core group. Were very young still." Nonis said he did get trade inquiries, pointing to younger players like rookie defenceman Morgan Rielly -- who turns 20 on Sunday. "Morgan Riellys easy to move today. But it doesnt makes sense to us." He said the team could have got some "pretty good high picks" for some of its players facing unrestricted free agency this summer. The Norris Trophy-nominee received a record $7.5-million contract after being taken to arbitration by the club and while that number may set the Predators back when it comes time to re-sign other key pieces, a year without Weber would have been catastrophic for the team. The team now goes about building on its franchise-best second round exit in 2011 and making the jump from perennial playoff qualifiers to serious playoff contenders. Breakout Player to Watch: With the trade of Cody Franson to Toronto, some prime power-play minutes just opened up on the Predators blue line. The guy who looks to be the prime beneficiary of those minutes is Jonathon Blum. The 2007 first-rounder notched eight points in 23 games with Nashville last season after being recalled from Milwaukee in February. Though Weber and Ryan Suter will continue to eat up the big-time minutes and power play time, the Predators obviously believe in Blum, who averaged more ice-time per game than Franson last season and could fill in the 29 points he took with him once given a full season with the team. Marquee Match-Up: Feb. 9 at Ottawa - Capital Concern. Mike Fisher makes his first-ever journey to Ottawa as a member of the opposition. With the Senators in a full-on rebuilding stage and Fisher settled in Nashville, how will the fans greet their former hero? Other Dates to Watch: Oct. 20 at Vancouver - The Predators make their first trip to Rogers Arena since the Canucks bounced them from the playoffs in the second round. Reason to Get Excited: The cavalry is coming. Nashville let a lot of their veteran players walk in the off-season, which may seem like a bad thing for a team trying to make a push to the next level. But the good news is that those departures should mean a promotion for a lot of prospects and young NHLers from within the organization. Blum should be able to fill in for Franson, but beyond that, theyve already seen what players like Colin Wilson, Blake Geoffrion and Cal OReilly can do at the NHL level. The departures of players like Sullivan, Dumont, Ward and Goc opens up minutes for the young crop. That, in turn, frees up cash to potentially lock up key elements like Weber, Ryan Suter and Pekka Rinne for the long-term. Home Hardware: Few NHL coaches have consistently done more with less than Barry Trotz. Thats not to undercut the talent level of the current Predators squad, but Trotz has shepherded the team from expansion to the playoffs to contenders over the past decade largely without the benefit of a star-studded line-up. Perhaps winning a division title might get him a sniff at the Jack Adams Award. However, thats easier said than done when youre fighting off the Red Wings on a yearly basis. Still, if he hasnt done enough to win one already, who knows what it will take? On The Hot Seat: General manager David Poile has done well to assemble a competitive team through the draft. Stage 2 of the Predators plan is keeping those pieces together. He played his hand with Weber the best he could by taking him to arbitration and got scorched to the tune of $3 million more than he was offering (and $1 million less than what Weber wanted). Now hes faced with the task of re-signing Weber, Suter and Rinne before July 1 next year. The team has a wealth of cap space, but the Predators just arent a spend-to-the-cap organization. Further complicating matters is that while Weber still has one more year of restricted free agency after his current deal expires, Suter and Rinne are headed to unrestricted free agency. If Poile cant get most of the leg-work done on those three deals over the course of the regular season it may force either a painful rebuild, uncomfortably high off-season contract numbers or a single-season, go-for-broke playoff push. Its Your! Call: Nashville certainly served notice last season that they are a force to be reckoned with after they sent Anaheim packing in the playoffs and pushed Vancouver to six games before bowing out. So have they spoiled the element of surprise that may have forced other teams to underestimate them? Nashville now has a Norris nominee and a Vezina nominee, but no top-tier scoring threat up front. If teams clamp down on the Predators and try to beat them at their own game, will they be able to post a record good enough to stay afloat in the high-powered Western Conference? Martin Erat and Sergei Kostitsyns 50-point output was third worst amongst team-leaders in the NHL last season ahead of only Edmonton and Florida. The team then jettisoned 49 goals from last seasons squad through trades and unsigned free agents while acquiring only 17 goals in replacement players. The team has a lot of young talent, but leaning on players yet to play a full NHL season is a risky strategy for a traditionally low-scoring team. If the team is unable to be amongst the NHLs stingiest defences, will they be able to overcome their lack of fire-power?

Gauthier Dupont Gauthier, The League did the right thing shortly after the game and issued a statement that the linesman erred in his interpretation of Rule 83.1 and the play should have been blown dead for the off-side at the Nashville blue line. The misinterpretation resulted from the very question of what constitutes a "back pass" as described in the last paragraph of Rule 83.1 - If a player legally carries or passes the puck back into his own defending zone while a player of the opposing team is in such defending zone, the off-side shall be ignored and play permitted to continue. The key word in the rule is "legally" as it applies to a defending player transporting the puck back into his own zone. The intent and spirit of the rule allows for situations where a player has possession and control of the puck and either cycles back into his defending zone or clearly passes the puck back toward a teammate within that zone. This player decision could be made to avoid a check in the neutral zone, to buy some time and maintain puck possession while other teammates are changing at the players bench or to regroup for an offensive attack through the neutral zone that might be clogged with traffic. For it to be determined that the puck was returned to the defending zone through a legal back pass, the player executing this pass must have full possession and control of the puck. In addition, any action by an attacking player that causes a deflection/rebound off a defending player in the neutral zone back into the defending zone (i.e. stick check, body check, physical contact), a delayed off-side shall be signalled by the linesman. A long stretch pass was intended for Colorado forward Matt Duchene as he snuck behind the Nashville defencemen. Scott Hannans desperation attempt to bat the puck down caused a redirection of the puck which then further deflected off the skate of Craig Smith. In both cases, this form of contact with the puck did not constitute possession or control by either of the two Nashville players. It would be no different had the puck been deflected off the shin guard or body of Hannan, followed by the skate of Smith which delayed the puck from crossing their blue line ahead of Matt Duchene. Off-side is the call! Barry Trotz was understandably upset with the linesmans ruling on this play. In an emotionally charged play such as this, the referee or linesman can go directly to the coach and offer his interpretation. I found that delivering the message directly to the coach at times such as this was far more effective than through the captain or alternate. Many of you will probably ask why one of the other officials on the ice didnt blow the whistle if they observed the obvious off-side play or if the goal could subsequently be disallowed following a group conference held with the linesman? Both are reasonable actions and alternatives to getting this play right. Let me provide you with my thoughts, references from the rules and final authority on the subject.dddddddddddd. First, let me say that the linesmen in the NHL are the best in the world at their trade. They make excellent judgments on extremely close plays that are executed at lightning speed. Replays almost always prove them correct. On very rare occasions, mistakes are made. Rule 31.4 says the "The referees shall not halt the game for any infractions of the rules concerning Rule 83 - Off-side, or any violation of Rule 81 - Icing. Determining infractions of these rules is the duty of the linesmen unless, by virtue of some accident, the linesman is prevented from doing so, in which case, the duties of the linesman shall be assumed by a referee until play is stopped." ("Accident" means being blocked out, bumped, fallen down or anything would cause the linesman to miss an off-side play.) At a training camp meeting a few years ago, the referees posed the question to allow for a referee to blow the whistle where an obvious off-side had been missed by a linesman. The flat out answer was only if the linesman is unable to make the call through one of the above reasons listed. Furthermore, the referees were told to lay off if the linesman made a wave-off signal which signified he saw the play and made a judgment on the play. If it was a wrong judgment, the linesmen were prepared to live with it no differently than a minor penalty missed by the referee! In certain situations, we often see the officials huddle at the referees crease to determine legitimate goals following potential goalkeeper interference, high-stick infractions where injury has resulted, high hits/illegal hits to the head and pucks shot out of play by the defending team from their defending zone. Conferences by the officials are designed to get the call right and the initial decision made by an official have been overturned through a meeting of the minds. By what authority, you might ask, would the goal be disallowed since Rule 83.4 states that, "Other than in situations involving a delayed off-side and the puck being shot on goal, no goal can be disallowed after the fact for an off-side violation, except for the human factor involved in blowing the whistle." I would suggest that a conference by the officials would have been well served and justified in this case since it was a rule interpretation error and not a visual judgment error made by the linesman on the blue line which the spirit of the above rule implies. When a linesman has made an error on icing for any reason, the face-off is taken to centre ice without question. If through a conference of the officiating crew, it was determined that the puck was deflected by the Nashville players and not through any "back pass" of the puck, I believe the call could be reversed and the goal disallowed. NEW YORK -- Brian Schottenheimer is off the hot seat and out the door. The embattled New York Jets offensive co-ordinator told the team Tuesday that he will not return next season after six years running an offence that often failed to live up to expectations. In a statement released by the team Tuesday night, Schottenheimer said he made the decision "after much thought and consideration." Schottenheimer, the son of former NFL coach Marty Schottenheimer, was highly criticized for the Jets inconsistencies on an offensive unit that ranked 25th overall and for quarterback Mark Sanchez not progressing in his third year. The 38-year-old Schottenheimer said in the statement that he was "very proud of what we have accomplished" during his time with the Jets, and thanked coach Rex Ryan and the organization. "I look forward to the exciting opportunities that lie ahead," he said. Former Miami Dolphins coach Tony Sparano is expected to be at the top of the Jets wish list to replace Schottenheimer. Sparano, fired in December and replaced by Todd Bowles, has also worked as an assistant with Cleveland, Washington, Jacksonville and Dallas. Its one of a handful of coaching moves that will shake up Ryans staff. Offensive line coach Bill Callahan and wide receivers coach Henry Ellard are both not expected back. Schottenheimers future had been uncertain for several weeks, despite the votes of confidence from both Ryan and Tannenbaum. Sanchez struggled mightily down the stretch as the Jets lost three straight to end the season, and was wildly inconsistent throughout as Schottenheimers offence failed to establish an identity. After going with a run-first approach, which is Ryans preference, the Jets decided to start this season by passing more with wide receivers Santonio Holmes, Plaxico Burress and the since-departed Derrick Mason in the mix. But the offensive line started poorly, unable to consistently protect Sanchez or open up holes for the running game -- creating a domino effect that led to the quarterback getting bruised and battered routinely. After a few games, Ryan then insisted the Jets go back to a "ground-and-pound" approach, which was slow to develop with Shonn Greene. There were signs of trouble early when Mason made some critical comments, saying the team had "cracks" that needed to be fixed. Mason, along with Burress and Holmes, was also mentioned in a Daily News report in October that said the wide receivers had met with Ryan individually to complain about Schottenheimers system. All three denied the report, as did Ryan, but Mason was soon traded to Houston. The Jets even brought in Tom Moore, the former Indianapolis Colts offensive guru, as a consultant to assist Schottenheimer -- and some viewed that as a clear indicator that the team was not thrilled with the offensive co-ordinator. Schottenheimer publicly said he was happy to have someone with Moores experience to lean on, and Ryan repeatedly said Moores presence was in no way a result of a lack of confidence in Schottenheimer. But things seemed to come to a head in Week 16 as the offence couldnt get much of anything done down the stretch in a 29-14 loss to the Giants that seriously jeopardized their playoff hopes. Sanchez threw 59 times in the game, something that had even the players scratching their heads. In the season finale at Miami, Holmes sulked about his role and argued in the huddle, leading to Schottenheimers last major decision with the Jets. He benched the playmaker while New York was trying to get back into a 19-17 loss. Schottenheimer was often the target of irate fans, who flocked to sports radio shows, Twitter and message boards, demanding that he be fired. Predictably, many fans also celebrated the news on Twitter late Tuesday night after the move was announced. Schottenheimer came to New York in 2006 as part of former coach Eric Manginis staff, and was praised in that first season for a refreshingly creative approach. That seemed to diminish over the next few seasons, though, but Schottenheimer also dealt with a revolving door at quarterback with Chad Pennington, Kellen Clemens and then Brett Favre. Brandon Banks has a tough act to follow. His own. The five-foot-seven, 153-pound receiver/kick-returner is the reason why Hamilton will host Montreal in the East Division semifinal Sunday in Guelph, Ont. On Oct. 26, Banks returned a missed field goal 107 yards for the decisive TD in a thrilling 27-24 home win over the Alouettes. The victory earned Hamilton (10-8) second in the East and home-field advantage in a playoff rematch with Montreal (8-10). Banks, who joined the Ticats on Sept. 30, also had a 45-yard TD run earlier in the contest. Suffice to say, Banks isnt heading into the CFL playoffs under the radar. "Thats cool, thats part of football," he said. "They still have to go out there and execute and stop me or whoever is getting the ball. "I dream about (making big returns with game on the line) every week and hopefully I can make a difference. Im going to try. I want the ball in my hands and be able to go the distance at any moment." Banks has been a versatile performer for Hamilton. Offensively, he has nine catches for 95 yards and six carries for 60 yards and a TD. But ball security was an issue as Banks had 12 career special-teams fumbles and another as a receiver. Banks certainly filled a need for Hamilton, which had been in the market for an explosive returner after rookie Lindsey Lamar suffered a concussion earlier this season. Special-teams play is crucial in three-down football because not only can it result in game-winning returns but result in teams getting very good field position to start drives. "Being elusive, fast and quick . . . I definitely try to use those to my advantage," Banks said. "Speed kills in the game of football. "Special-teams here are very important because theyre a third of the game and you can average 20-some plays on special teams per game. Im trying to use the wider field and not being able to call for a fair catch to my advantage. I base my skills on doing a lot of eluding and trying to run by guys."
