Jonathan Huberdeau is making it difficult to knock the Saint John Sea Dogs from the top of the league standings. Huberdeau scored the winning goal with 30 seconds remaining in the third period as his Sea Dogs edged the host Shawinigan Cataractes 2-1 on Saturday in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action. The win is the seventh in a row for Saint John and gives them a three-point lead over the Cataractes for first place in the league. Charles-Olivier Roussel also scored for the Sea Dogs (38-13-2) while Nathan Beaulieu chipped in with two assists. Maximilien Le Sieur scored the lone goal for the Cataractes (35-12-5), who lost for the second time in as many nights. Matthieu Corbeil made 37 saves for the win and first star of the game as Gabriel Girard turned away 23 shots in defeat. At Shawinigan, Que., Le Sieur opened the scoring at 14:17 of the first period to give the Cataractes a 1-0 lead. The game stayed in Shawingans favour much of the second period, but Roussel scored on the power play at 18:51 to tie the game 1-1 after 40 minutes of play. Despite outshooting the Sea Dogs through the third period, a late penalty taken by Jonathan Racine led to a power-play goal for Huberdeau at 19:30. --- Sagueneens 5 Huskies 1 At Saguenay, Que., Sebastien Sylvestre scored three times and Christopher Gibson made 25 saves as the Sagueneens (28-16-9) defeated Rouyn-Noranda (16-31-5) for their sixth win in seven games. --- Voltiguers 2 Oceanic 1 At Drummondville, Que., Andre Bouvet-Morrissette scored both goals for the Voltiguers (22-25-7) as they picked up at least one point in their seventh straight game by defeating Rimouski (32-22-0). --- Titan 5 Mooseheads 1 At Halifax, N.S., Christophe Lalancette scored twice and Robert Steeves turned away 31 shots as Acadie-Bathurst (26-22-5) beat the Mooseheads (28-18-5) for their first win in three outings. --- Armada 2 Remparts 1 At Boisbriand, Que., Jess Tanguy scored the winning goal and Etienne Marcoux made 32 saves as the Armada (29-20-3) handed Quebec (32-13-7) their third straight loss --- Olympiques 6 Foreurs 3 At Gatineau, Que., Alex Zafiris scored three goals and Jacob Conrad picked up three assists as the Olympiques (20-24-8) snapped a five-game losing streak by beating Val-dOr (21-28-4).

MILAN, Italy -- Tottenham had two goals disallowed in a 0-0 draw at home to Serie A joint leader Lazio in their opening game of the Europa League group stage on Thursday, while defending champion Atletico Madrid cruised to a 3-0 win at Hapoel Tel-Aviv. United States international Clint Dempsey had a goal ruled out for offside halfway through the first period, before Steven Caulker saw his header struck off for his push on Lazios Stefano Mauri. Alvaro Gonzalez hit the post in the first half for Lazio, which failed to win for the first time this season. In Israel, Cristian Rodriguez, Diego Costa and Raul Garcia all scored as Atletico made easy work of Hapoel, despite playing without star striker Radamel Falcao, who was rested for the Group B opener. Elsewhere, three-time winner Liverpool beat Young Boys 5-3 in a thrilling match in Switzerland, Inter Milan needed a last-minute equalizer to draw 2-2 at home to Rubin Kazan and French league leader Marseille scraped a similar 2-2 draw at Fenerbahce. Substitute Jonjo Shelvey scored Liverpools fourth goal only 10 minutes after coming off the bench, before sealing the result two minutes from time. Teenager Andre Wisdom scored Liverpools second on his debut, after an own goal by Juhani Ojala had given the Premier League side an early lead. Sebastian Coates added Liverpools other goal in his first European match. Raphael Nuzzolo, Ojala and Gonzalo Zarate found the net for Young Boys, which briefly led in the second half. Inter Milan, another club seeking a fourth title, needed a stoppage-time goal as it twice came from behind against Rubin. The Russian side took a shock lead when Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic saved Bibras Natkhos spot-kick, only for the rebound to fall to Aleksandr Ryazantsev, who lashed it home. Teenager Marko Livaja levelled with his first goal for Inter but Salomon Rondon looked to have given Rubin a historic win at San Siro before Yuto Nagatomos equalizer. Marseille had to score twice in the final eight minutes to rescue its draw in Turkey. The French side, which has won all five of its league games this season, seemed to be heading for a surpise defeat following goals from Fenerbahces Caner Erkin and Alex. However, Mathieu Valbuena pulled one back for the Ligue 1 team eight minutes from time before Andre Ayew sent the vociferous home fans into despair with the final kick of the game. Udinese also snatched a 1-1 draw at the very end, Antonio Di Natales stoppage-time strike rescuing a point for the Serie A side against big-spending Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala. Lacina Traore had given Anzhi a halftime lead. Meanwhile, last seasons runner-up Athletic Bilbao was held to a 1-1 draw at home by Hapoel Kiryat Shmona. Adrian Rochet gave the Israeli champion a surprise lead in the 14th minute but Markel Susaeta levelled five minutes from halftime. Striker Fernando Llorente was introduced at the start of the second half to loud boos from the home fans, who are unhappy with his decision to seek a move in January. Athletic has lost early ground in Group I, after Lyon beat Sparta Prague 2-1. Napoli cruised to a 4-0 win over AIK Stockholm, with Edu Vargas scoring a hat-trick -- his first goals for the Italian club. Napolis Marek Hamsik was sent off in the closing stages but there was still time for Blerim Dzemaili to add a fourth.

Subban had broken his stick in the attacking zone on the power play and returned to the bench to get a new one.KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Tack the Kansas City Royals onto the list of teams that are sick of seeing Adam Jones. The Orioles slugger followed up his eventual winning homer in the 15th inning the previous night with a two-run shot on Thursday, helping Baltimore climb back from a three-run deficit to beat the Royals 5-3 and win their seventh straight road game. The Orioles also improved to 12-1 when Jones goes deep, something hes done each of the last three games. He has 13 homers on the year, a mark he didnt reach until June 25 last season. "Hes hot right now. Hes really hot," said J.J. Hardy, whose two-run single in the seventh inning provided the go-ahead runs. "Hes been swinging the bat impressively." Jones preferred to deflect the attention from his hot start to his teammates, even though hes heading to a three-game set against Washington with a nine-game hitting streak. "Were just chipping away," Jones said. "Youre down 3-0, its easy to give away at-bats. Were not giving anything away right now." Brian Matusz (3-4) won for the third time in four starts after enduring a career-worst 12-decision losing streak. He allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk in six innings. Relievers Luis Ayala and Pedro Strop made it through two innings unscathed, and Jim Johnson worked the ninth for his 14th save. Hes converted 22 straight since Aug. 14, 2011. "We got deep in the game with our starter, which we needed after last night," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "Thats a very aggressive team and if you make a mistake, theyre going to make you pay for it. But we were also able to use that to our advantage." Luke Hochevar (3-4) pitched well for six innings. His only real miscue was the two-run homer by Jones in the fourth. But the right-hander ran into trouble in the seventh, allowing back-to-back singles by Wilson Betemit and Chris Davis, the start of a three-run inning for the Orioles. Hochevar was pulled after Davis base hit, which centre fielder Jarrod Dyson grossly misplayed. The ball bounced in front of him and went to the wall, allowing Betemit to score. Reliever Aaron Crow came into the game and got two qquick outs, but then walked No.dddddddddddd. 9 hitter Luis Exposito and leadoff hitter Xavier Avery to load the bases. Hardy followed with a two-run single, helping extend the Orioles longest road winning streak since 1999. "I just didnt get the job done," Crow said. "I need to go out and attack those guys, and if they beat you, so be it. I just cant give guys free bases and it ended up hurting me today." Kansas City had ample opportunities to pick up a couple wins against Baltimore, but instead wound up with a pair of frustrating losses in the two-game, midweek series. Jonathan Broxton blew a two-run lead in the ninth inning of the opener Wednesday night, and the Royals eventually lost their third straight extra-inning game. They jumped out to a three-run lead after three innings Thursday before the Orioles mounted their comeback. Humberto Quinteros two-run double and Johnny Giavotellas RBI single to right brought in the runs for Kansas City, but thats all that Matusz allowed in an otherwise strong outing. "With the lineup we have, it doesnt matter what the score is. Were in the ballgame," Matusz said. "Its just a matter of staying tough, staying mentally tough." Hochevar was just as good most of the afternoon. After watching his ERA balloon to a run per inning, the former No. 1 overall draft pick put together seven innings of three-hit ball in his last start against the White Sox. Hochevar ran his scoreless innings streak to 10 before making a mistake on a 3-2 pitch to Jones. "My focus has not changed from the beginning of the year to now," he said. "Still going out with the mindset of executing quality pitches and fight like crazy to get this team a win." SEATTLE -- Justin Smoak hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning and the Seattle Mariners beat Kansas City 4-0 on Tuesday night, putting the Royals post-season hopes in serious jeopardy. Mariners rookie left-hander James Paxton (3-0), making just his fourth major league start, worked a career-high seven innings, allowing four hits, walking none and striking out a career-high 10. The playoff picture looks as bleak as it can be for the Royals (83-74). They are four games behind Cleveland for the second wild-card berth with five games to play. The Royals three competitors for the two wild-card spots -- Tampa Bay, Texas and Cleveland -- all won Tuesday. The Royals need to win every game and have both the Indians and Rangers completely collapse. It was the 13th shutout for the Mariners and the ninth time the Royals have been shut out. Seattle touched Bruce Chen (8-4) for a run in the first when Brad Miller reached on an infield single followed by Abraham Almontes single to centre. Almonte has reached base in all his 18 games to start his career, 16 with a hit. With one out, Kendrys Morales singled to left, driving in Miller. Chen worked five innings, allowing seven hits and four runs. He walked three and struck out five. The Royals could not respond against Paxton. They put together two singles in the first inning but a double play eased him out of trouble. He didnt allow more than one baserunner in any inning after that and at one point he retired 12 straight. The Mariners blew the game open in the fifth with three runs -- all with two outs. Morales, who had three hits, doubled to deep centre. Franklin Gutierrez walked and Smoak hit a 0-2 fastball over the wall in left field. Smoak has 19 home runs but it was just his second right-handed. The other was Sunday against the Los Angeles Angels. NOTES: Mariners LHP Danny Hultzen, the second player taken in the 2011 draft, has a problem with his left shoulder and will see Dr. James Andrews on Monday. "Ed (team doctor Ed Khalfayan) saw him and, quite frankly, doesnt like what he sees," GM Jack Zduriencik said. "He saw some damage that he was unhappy with. Its in the shoulder but not in the rotator cuff, more tendon area, labrum." . The club confirmed Zduriencik will return in 2014. . The Royals need one more win to match their win total from 1993 (84-78). ... Eric Hosmer of the Royals had two hits, his ninth multi-hit game in September. He leads the AL with 59.

Yet even as his woes mounted, manager Clint Hurdle stuck by Barajas, sending him to the batters box with the tying run on third and two outs in the ninth against Washington on Tuesday night. "I thought what the heck? Hes hit a few homers before," Hurdle said. Hurdles faith paid off when Barajas drilled a two-run homer off closer Henry Rodriguez to lift the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 5-4 victory. The Nationals went ahead 4-3 after Adam LaRoches two-run blast in the top of the ninth off Pittsburgh closer Joel Hanrahan. Alex Presley singled with one out in the bottom of the ninth off Rodriguez (1-2) and moved to third on a pair of wild pitches before Barajas broke through. "I kind of figured (Rodriguez) was going to come hard," Barajas said. "I wasnt going to let one go by if it was where I like it." Tony Watson (2-0) earned the victory after replacing Hanrahan. Rodriguez, perhaps unsettled after walking Presley then letting him advance to third by bouncing a pair of breaking balls past catcher Wilson Ramos, threw a fastball that Barajas hit into the seats for his first home run since last September when he played for the Los Angeles Dodgers. "(Rodriguez) usually has pretty good command of his curveball and that kind of got him in a jam and I thought he was still going to get out of it," Washington manager Davey Johnson said. "Obviously, Barajas knows hes going to get a fastball and he gets out in front, and thats the ball game." Barajas raised his arms in triumph and nearly slipped rounding first base before getting mobbed by his teammates after crossing the plate. It was vindication for Barajas, who was booed heavily after popping up in the seventh inning. "Id love to be doing better, nobody wants to hear that from your home fans," he said. "I was in a situation where I was able to put them back on my side. Hopefully theyll give me a little more leeway." Andrew McCutchen hit his first homer of the season for the Pirates and Garrett Jones added his fourth. Neil Walker gave Pittsburgh a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the eighth with a sacrifice fly off Washington reliever Tyler Clippard. The lead lasted all of two batters. Ryan Zimmerman, playing in his first game since April 20 after sppending more than two weeks on the disabled list with inflammation in his right shoulder, singled off Hanrahan and LaRoche smashed a 97 mph fastball from Hanrahan just over the wall in centre.dddddddddddd The Nationals, who have climbed to the top of the National League East thanks to nine wins in one-run games, turned to Rodriguez. He struggled against the bottom third of one of baseballs weakest lineups while blowing his second save of the season. "I feel terrible for Henry," LaRoche said. "He wants to win as bad as anybody. I know its killing him... with the little things that are going on. And then to throw 100 and have a guy run into it to walk you off, its frustrating." Washington rookie outfielder Bryce Harper went 1 for 4 with a double while starting in right field in place of Jayson Werth, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list after breaking his left wrist in a loss to Philadelphia on Sunday. Werth will be out at least three months, meaning Harper is likely here to stay. He certainly appears ready. The 19-year-old is batting .300 with six doubles in just nine games. The late struggles by the closers was in stark contrast to the work done by both starters. Washingtons Edwin Jackson was stellar, giving up three hits in seven innings, striking out five and walking one. He retired the final 10 batters and needed just 91 pitches to deal with baseballs lowest scoring team. Pittsburghs A.J. Burnett, lit up for 12 runs in 2 2-3 innings by St. Louis last Wednesday, bounced back with the kind of performance the Pirates were looking for when they acquired him in a trade with the New York Yankees in February. The 35-year-old gave up a solo homer to Ramos leading off the third and an RBI single by Rick Ankiel in the fourth. Otherwise he was dominant and grew stronger as the night wore on, allowing two runs and six hits in eight innings, walking one and striking out 10. "Both starters pitched a great ballgame and the guys who were supposed to save it both gave it up," Johnson said. "Henrys been pretty good all year long, and he gave up the one that beat us. But hell be back and hell be fine." NOTES: The Nationals are 9-5 in one-run games this season, with all five losses coming on the road ... The series continues on Wednesday. Ross Detwiler (3-1, 1.59 ERA) will start for the Nationals against Pittsburghs Erik Bedard (2-4, 2.65) ... Pittsburghs Pedro Alvarez is 0 for 8 since moving to cleanup on Saturday. ' ' '

(Sports Network) - The surprising Detroit Red Wings will try to extend their lead in the Western Conference semifinals when they host the top-seeded Chicago Blackhawks in Thursdays Game 4 at Joe Louis Arena. The seventh-seeded Red Wings lost Game 1 of this series by a 4-1 score before taking the next two meetings by a combined margin of 7-2. Jimmy Howard was stellar in Mondays Game 3 triumph, stopping 39 shots to help Detroit record a 3-1 win in the Motor City. Chicago hopes to even this best-of-seven series on Thursday, but the Presidents Trophy winners are just 2-3 as the road team in the playoffs. Detroit, meanwhile, is 3-1 at Joe Louis Arena during this postseason. Pavel Datsyuk, Gustav Nyquist and Drew Miller all scored goals for the Red Wings on Monday. Howard made 15 saves during a scoreless first period and also turned aside 16-of-17 shots in the third. "Our hard work has been paying off," said Howard. "Guys have been taking the body and blocking shots. Were playing with a lot of heart right now and we have to keep it going." Patrick Kane had the lone goal while Corey Crawford gave up all three goals on 30 shots for the Blackhawks "Theyre playing really well right now and have a lot of things going their way," said Kane. "We just have to re-group because I thought we played very well tonight. Its going to be a good series." The Blackhawks went 0-for-4 on the power play and are just 1-for-9 on the man advantage in this series. However, Chicago still hasnt allowed a power-play goal in this postseason, killing off all 29 of the oppositions chances with the man advantage. Chicago thought it had tied the game at 2-2 early in the third period only to see the goal waved off due to a controversial goaltender interference call. Just over a minute after Chicago cut the deficit to 2-1 on Kanes goal, they had another score disallowed. Viktor Stalberg fired a shot on net from the right side that went in, but Andrew Shaw was ruled to have interfered with Howard. Several replays, however, failed to show Shaw making contact with the goaltender. "Disagree," said Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville when asked what he thought of the call. Shortly after the controversial call Detroit got its two-goal lead back at 6:46 as Datsyuk roofed a wrister over Crawford. On the injury front, Detroit forward Mikael Samuelsson sat out Game 3 after suffering an undisclosed injury in practice on Tuesday. He is questionable for Thursdays contest. These Central Division and Original Six foes also have met 15 times in the playoffs and Chicago has taken eight of those series. However, Detroit has claimed the last two postseason encounters, including a five-game series win when the franchises last met in the playoffs in the 2009 Western Conference finals.

Meanwhile, two stunning long-range strikes helped Lazio beat Pescara 2-0 to pass both Milan clubs to move into third place, four points behind Napoli. Chances were few and far between in Udine with both sides having only one shot on target all night. Napoli started with an attacking line-up and went closest in the opening period when Marek Hamsik headed straight at goalkeeper Daniele Padelli just before halftime. Edinson Cavani, the leagues leading scorer, was guilty of a glaring miss when he failed to put away Pablo Armeros cross from six yards out. Second-place Napoli is now six points behind defending champion Juventus, which it hosts on Friday. Napoli has only scored one goal in the past five matches in all competitions. "I think that if Napoli plays like we did tonight we can also put Juventus in difficulty," Napolli coach Walter Mazzarri said.dddddddddddd "I have to give credit to my players. It was Radus first Serie A goal after 119 games. Lulic doubled Lazios lead six minutes later with a brilliant solo goal, lashing another 25-yard thunderbolt into the top left corner. It is Lazios first win in six matches. "We played a great first half today," Lulic said. "The three points are important. "I am happy with my goal, but the most important thing is the victory. PHOENIX -- The tired, last-place and short-handed New Orleans Hornets were just the opponent the Phoenix Suns needed to get back to .500 and gain a bit of ground in their bid to make the playoffs. Jared Dudley scored 15 of his 21 points in the second half and the Suns beat the Hornets 92-75 Sunday night to pull within 1 1/2 games of Houston for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Shannon Brown, starting for injured Grant Hill, added 16 for Phoenix. Channing Frye had 14 points and 11 rebounds, Marcin Gortat scored 13 and Steve Nash handed out 14 assists for the Suns, 16-1 this season when their opponent scores 90 or fewer points. Jason Smith and Marco Belinelli scored 14 apiece for the Hornets. Jarrett Jack added 13. New Orleans -- finishing off a five-game, seven-day road trip -- became the third team in the NBA and first in the West to lose 40 games. Phoenix dominated the game at the foul line, going 19 of 21 to the Hornets 7 of 9. "We had to come out and get the win," Dudley said. "We are at home, fighting for playoffs. We see that Houston has been losing, Utah has been losing, so we have to keep it going. It is going to come down to the road games, so the home games are must wins. It doesnt matter who comes here." The Suns play seven of their next eight on the road. "We are going to have games that we have to win and a lot of those games are going to be on the road," Phoenix coach Alvin Gentry said. "For us, this is our first playoff game and we get on a plane and fly to Sacramento and that will be our next playoff game. I think that is how we have to approach it." After the Suns took a 50-41 halftime lead, Brown led an 18-4 run that put Phoenix ahead 70-49 with 4:36 left in the third quarter. He started the outburst with three free throws after being fouled by Belinelli, then stole the ball from Smith and sank a 3. Brown ended the run with a 14-footer. Dudley scored six straight points during the surge. "We knew they were a little bit tired and wanted to jump on them and keep them down," Brown said. The Hornets scored six in a row to cut it to 72-58 on two free throws by Greivis Vasquez before the Suns Josh Childress sank a 3-pointer at the third-quarter buzzer to boost the lead to 75-58 entering the fourth. It was just the fourth 3 of the season for Childress and first since Feb. 4. New Orleans got no closer than 12 in the final quarter. The Hornets led only once, 33-32 on a 3-pointer by Al-Farouq Aminu with 7:31 left in the first half. "We have been in situations before off a back-to-back and this was the first time that I thought it affected us from an energy standpoint," New Orleans coach Monty Williams said. "I thought the ball didnt move tonight. ... We had 19 turnovers and you cant win games on the road with 19 turnovers and not getting to the free throw line. That is a recipe for a loss." Phoenix used an 11-2 run to go up 49-39 on a pair of free throws by Frye with 1:46 left in the half. Michael Redd started the spurt with a three-point play and Brown scored on a reverse layup and 21-footer. The Suns Robin Lopez, on his 24th birthday, scored all 10 of his points in the nine minutes of the second quarter on 2 of 2 shooting and 6 of 6 from the foul line. "He really beasted us," Williams said. Frye had eight points and nine rebounds in the first half. The Hornets, already ravaged by injuries, lost Chris Johnson with a concussion in the first half. NOTES: After dressing just eight players the previous two games, New Orleans had 10 this time with the return of Chris Kaman from a five-game absence due to illness and Gustavo Ayon from a three-game leave for the birth of his child. ... The Suns Markieff Morris missed his second straight game with the flu but Gentry said the rookie forward is expected back for Tuesdays game against the Kings. ... Phoenix won the season series 3-1.

Hockey Alberta announced it would do away with bodychecking for 11- and 12-year-old players following a fractious debate that saw the resignation of Hockey Calgarys president after he suggested the practice be banned. "Our players safety is the foundation in making this decision," Rob Virgil, Hockey Albertas board chairman, said in a statement Wednesday.VANCOUVER -- Jonathan Huberdeau scored the only goal of the shootout Tuesday as the Florida Panthers defeated the Vancouver Canucks 3-2. Shawn Matthias and Brad Boyes had the goals for Florida (6-12-4), which got 27 saves from Tim Thomas. Jannek Hansen and Chris Higgins scored in regulation for Vancouver (11-8-4). Roberto Luongo finished with 34 saves through regulation and overtime as the Canucks lost their fifth straight. Vancouver has scored just six goals over that five-game slide. The Canucks killed off a full two-minute penalty in overtime, with Luongo making a huge pad stop on Huberdeau. Vancouver then poured it on in the final minute of the extra period, but couldnt find a way past Thomas. The 39-year-old goalie, who led the Boston Bruins to the 2011 Stanley Cup in a memorable seven-game victory over Vancouver, had not given up a goal at Rogers Arena since Game 5 of the final. Playing in just his second game back after a long absence with a lower-body injury, Hansen jumped on a bad clearing attempt from Panthers forward Tomas Fleischmann and wired a shot past Thomas for his third of the season at 2:35 of the final period to tie snap a 1-1 tie. After the teams exchanged chances, Matthias brought the Panthers back to level terms by ripping his third of the season past Luongo from the slot at 8:34. Down 1-0 after a lacklustre first period, the Canucks came out with some renewed intensity in the second and were rewarded when Higgins beat Thomas through a maze of legs for his seventh goal of the season at 3:26. Thomas, who won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP with Boston back in 2011, then made a big stop on Canucks forward Alexandre Burrows before Daniel Sedin sent a shot from the right faceoff circle just wide. Luongo didnt have much to do in a second period that lost steam after Vancouvers initial surge, but did make a good save on streaking Panthers forward Nick Bjugstad with under two minutes to go.dddddddddddd Florida opened the scoring at 3:43 of the first period against the NHLs No. 1 penalty killing unit. With Canucks forward Jannik Hansen off in the box for goaltender interference, Aleksander Barkovs shot off the post bounced right to Boyes, who beat a down-and-out Luongo for his eighth of the season. That goal seemed to stun the Canucks, who looked like a team that thought they were going to have an easy night against the second-worst team in the Eastern Conference. Vancouvers 26th-ranked power play went to work midway through the period, but the Panthers had the best chance when Luongo was forced to make a big save on a Marcel Goc breakaway. Burrows, who has yet to score this season in 11 games, then hit the post on a Florida power play with about five minutes to go in the period. Notes: Canucks forward Dale Weise returned to the lineup after missing 10 games with a lower-body injury. He took the place of David Booth, who has just one goal and two assists in 13 games this season. ... Former members of the Panthers on the current Canucks roster include Luongo, Booth, Higgins, Mike Santorelli and Jason Garrison. ... Luongo, who was with the Panthers from 2000 to 2006 before being dealt to the Canucks, still ranks first among all-time Florida goaltenders for wins (108), games played (317) and shutouts (26). ... The Panthers had won two of three coming into Tuesday, including a 4-1 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday that was the 200th of Thomas career. Thomas took last season off before signing with Florida during training camp. ... The Canucks continue their six-game homestand on Friday against the Columbus Blue Jackets. ... Cousineaus standout performance represented a huge personal victory after two difficult years in which he first battled back from injury and then was unable to qualify for a second run in a World Cup race.SHANGHAI, China -- Canadas Milos Raonic has been eliminated from the Shanghai Masters after losing 7-6 (2), 6-4 to Switzerlands Stanislas Wawrinka in the third round. The 10th-ranked player from Thornhill, Ont., was coming off two straight final appearances, winning in Thailand before losing the final in Tokyo last week. Meanwhile, Roger Federers chances of qualifying for the ATP Tour Finals took a hit Thursday when he lost in three sets to Gael Monfils, the latest early-round loss for the 17-time Grand Slam champion. Monfils beat the former No. 1-ranked Federer 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-3 in the third round, extending the Swiss stars recent slide. Defending champion Novak Djokovic and top-ranked Rafael Nadal, meanwhile, moved into the quarter-finals with straight-set wins. Djokovic beat Italys Fabio Fognini 6-3, 6-3, while Nadal rallied from 5-2 down in the second-set tiebreaker to down Argentinas Carlos Berlocq 6-1, 7-6 (5). Two of the tournaments other top seeded players were ousted: No. 3 David Ferrer lost to Florian Mayer 6-4, 6-3, and No. 4 Tomas Berdych was ousted by Nicolas Almagro 6-7 (6), 6-3, 7-6 (4). Federer, who has slipped to No. 7 in the rankings, was playing for the first time since losing in the fourth round of the U.S. Open. He was in need of a strong showing in Shanghai to secure a berth in the elite season-ending ATP Tour Finals in London -- a tournament he played every year since 2002. Federer is currently seventh in the standings, with only a slight lead over several other players vying to get into the eight-man field in London. He plans to play in Basel and Paris in hopes of making it into the Nov. 4-11 tournament. Federer fell to a player ranked outside the top 40 for the fourth time in his last six matches. He came into the match with a 6-1 record against Monfils, who returned to the tour recently after an injury layoff. Federer remained upbeat despite the loss -- and his subsequent defeat in doubles with Chinese partner Zhang Ze. He said the most important thing was not to worry about every setback. "Its pretty simple: You just keep on working hard, make sure that you get back on winning ways, then you become confident again, sort of get there," Federer said. "Monfils is a quality player, like some others," he said. "I lost some other matches this yeaar because I couldnt really perform at 100 per cent.dddddddddddd Probably shouldnt have played. But I dont really care having to explain some losses from time to time." As has been his problem in recent months, Federer struggled to find consistency, hitting 36 unforced errors, with many coming at critical points in the match. Still, he looked to have a chance to pull it out after fighting back from a break down in the second set. On Monfils serve in the next game, Federer hit an overhead smash to get a break point and then converted with a deeply angled crosscourt winner, pumping his fist as the decidedly pro-Federer crowd roared. But Federer was broken again early in the third set and couldnt muster another comeback. He had two more break chances in the seventh game, but couldnt convert either, even with Monfils looking spent, bending over to catch his breath after long rallies. Monfils, whos now ranked 42nd but has been as high as No. 7, said that even though Federer has not been as dominant as he used to be, with the likes of Djokovic, Nadal and Andy Murray contending for the majors, hes still no pushover. "A lot of people say, like, its not the same Rog because he got two other great players with him, Novak and Rafa. A third one plays also very good, Andy," he said. "But when hes on the court, hes still Roger. He can rip it from anywhere. He can do stuff that not many player can do." Monfils did notice, however, a slight dip in Federers game. "I think he miss a little bit more than he used to," he said. "I know he will try and go for his shot, but maybe he is a bit less confident." Djokovic, who plays Monfils next, said although Federers form has dropped this season, it would be a mistake to write him off. "Hes 17-time Grand Slam winner, one of the best players in the history of the game. If he says hes going to play better, work better, its definitely worth listening if he says it that way," he said. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Juan Martin del Potro also advanced to the quarterfinals, strengthening their bids to qualify for the ATP Finals. Tsonga, one of several players chasing Federer, defeated Japans Kei Nishikori, 7-6 (5), 6-0, and del Potro moved through when Tommy Haas withdrew before their match with a back injury. ' ' '

TORONTO -- The Toronto Maple Leafs stood pat Wednesday, deciding that the cost to make a move on trade deadline day was too much. "We would have been hurting ourselves long-term and we werent prepared to do that," Dave Nonis, Torontos senior vice-president and general manager, told reporters. Nonis, who said he made plenty of calls to test the waters, said the asking prices were high and the talent on offer limited. The sense he got was there might be more movement come the summer. "There wasnt a lot available in general," he said. "I think deals that changed the look of your team seemed to happen at the draft." Nonis acknowledged that his team had been up and down, putting the onus on the Leafs to return to their winning ways before the Olympic break. "If we do, we should be fine. And if we dont, then were going to have some difficulties," he said. "But its not a bad team. I think weve got a good core group. Were very young still." Nonis said he did get trade inquiries, pointing to younger players like rookie defenceman Morgan Rielly -- who turns 20 on Sunday. "Morgan Riellys easy to move today. But it doesnt makes sense to us." He said the team could have got some "pretty good high picks" for some of its players facing unrestricted free agency this summer. One of those is forward Dave Bolland, who is recovering from a tendon injury. There is no time frame on his return, with Nonis saying some movement was still causing him discomfort. "Its going to take however long it takes. Im hopeful and confident that hell be back this year," said Nonis. Bolland had surgery after being checked into the board by Zack Kassian in a 4-0 loss in Vancouver on Nov. 2. Asked about taking on other teams unrestricted free agents via trade, Nonis said either the price was too high or he felt the Leafs already had comparable players. "Why pay a price for nothing? Asked how close the Leafs were to being a Stanley Cup contender, Nonis said the salary cap has changed the NHL landscape so that anyone who gets into the post-season has a chance to win it all. "Are there favourites? No question, Would I put ourselves in as a favourite? No. But I think you saw in the last year we were pretty close to moving on." Toronto, which took Boston to seven games in the first round of last seasons playoffs, was 32-23-8 going into Wednesday nights game in New York against the Rangers. Other Leafs who are eligible to become unrestricted free agents after the season are forwards Nikolai Kulemin, Jay McClement, Mason Raymond and Troy Bodie, and defenceman Paul Ranger.

NHL China Jerseys . -- The Anaheim Ducks have activated defenceman Lubomir Visnovsky from injured reserve after a month-long absence with a broken finger.EVANSTON, Ill. -- No matter how many wins Michigan piles up, Trey Burke insisted one thing will not change. The Wolverines will keep seeing themselves as underdogs, even after nights like this. Burke scored 23 points, Tim Hardaway Jr. added 21 and No. 2 Michigan pounded Northwestern 94-66 on Thursday to remain unbeaten. Off to their best start since they opened the 1985-86 season with 16 wins, the Wolverines (14-0, 1-0) had no trouble in the Big Ten opener after breezing through the non-conference portion of their schedule. They built a 21-point halftime lead with Burke and Hardaway Jr. leading the way and were never challenged by Northwestern (9-5, 0-1). "14-0 thats a great start -- and 1-0 in the Big Ten -- but weve got to keep the attitude where guys are still doubting us," Burke said. Hell get no argument from his coach. "Were always working that way, like were hunting all the time and we dont ever want to lose that," John Beilein said. "Its not a negative to always be working." Michigan shot 59.6 per cent overall and made 13 of 22 3-point attempts with the two guards doing most of the damage. Burke shot 9 of 16 overall and hit 4 of 6 3-pointers. Hardaway was 6 of 8 from the field and 4 of 5 from long range, and the ankle injury that kept him out of the previous game didnt seem to be an issue. "Just to see him back out there after his injury," Burke said. "Back in action. Back in the groove. It was great." Jordan Morgan added 12 points and 13 rebounds for the Wolverines, while Glenn Robinson III and Nik Stauskas scored 10 points apiece. Jared Swopshire and Kale Abrahamson each scored 11 points for Northwestern, but the Wildcats gave up the most points they have allowed this season while being outclassed by one of the nations best teams. "Eventually, weve got to start doing things that the coaches get on us about," guard Dave Sobolewski said. "We keep messing up the same things in the 1-3-1. We keep missing assignments. We keep falling asleep on deffence.dddddddddddd A lot of it will come down to heart and how bad we want it on defence mainly, too." It was a sharp contrast from their two meetings last season, when Michigan needed overtime to win both games. Then again, the Wildcats were short-handed. Besides suspending guard JerShon Cobb for the season for violating team policy, they also shut down one of their best players, Drew Crawford, for the remainder of the season last month because of a shoulder injury. Leading scorer Reggie Hearn sat out his second straight game because of a sprained ankle. Even so, Michigan wasnt showing any mercy. Instead, the Wolverines ended the suspense early. Burke, averaging a team-leading 17.8 points coming in, scored 15 in the first half. Hardaway added 12 points, hitting all four 3s, and Michigan barely broke a sweat before taking a 51-30 halftime lead. "I guess thats what happens when youre running the fastbreaks and getting easy baskets. It all comes off of defensive stops," Hardaway said. Burke did his best to bury Northwestern almost as soon as the game started. The sophomore guard scored 13 straight points for Michigan to help the Wolverines grab a 20-4 lead. "Hes got a presence out there," Beilein said. "Hes got a great ability to know when he can score and when he can find other people." Hardaway got going midway through the half, making consecutive 3-pointers that made it 33-13 and drew an "M Go Blue! M Go Blue!" chant from the maize-and-blue contingent in the stands. He struck again from the outside on consecutive possessions later in the half. And Burke wowed the crowd in the closing minutes when he laid the ball in after a nasty crossover. For Northwestern fans, there was little to cheer in the early going other than when football coach Pat Fitzgerald addressed the crowd on the heels of his teams Gator Bowl victory. "Coach told us to be aggressive," Burke said. "Dont be timid against the zone. Attack it so you can get good shots." ' ' '

Join TSN.ca in a 30 Teams In 30 Days tour of the NHL in preparation for the upcoming season. Today, we examine the 2011-12 campaign for the Nashville Predators. Get the lowdown on their off-season and the issues they face this season. And use the Your Call feature to give us your take! Regardless of how high expectations were for the Predators at the beginning of the summer, they took a decided boost on August 3 when Shea Webers arbitration award was announced. The Norris Trophy-nominee received a record $7.5-million contract after being taken to arbitration by the club and while that number may set the Predators back when it comes time to re-sign other key pieces, a year without Weber would have been catastrophic for the team. The team now goes about building on its franchise-best second round exit in 2011 and making the jump from perennial playoff qualifiers to serious playoff contenders. Heres a look at whats in store for this season. Additions: RW Niclas Bergfors, C Brodie Dupont, D Jack Hillen, C Robert Slaney, D Tyler Sloan, RW Zack Stortini Subtractions: RW J.P. Dumont, D Cody Franson, C Marcel Goc, D Aaron Johnson, C Matthew Lombardi, D Shane OBrien, LW Steve Sullivan, RW Andreas Thuresson, RW Joel Ward, D Brett Lebda Prospect Report: The Predators boast one of the deepest prospect pools in hockey, led by pint-sized Canadian golden boy Ryan Ellis. While he may not be as NHL-ready as some of the teams other prospects, Ellis possesses a raw offensive skill-set that is coveted by just about every NHL team. If he can overcome his size disadvantage, he and Weber (if he stays longer than this season, of course) may one day form a scary power-play combo. Beyond Ellis, theres a wealth of top-end talent in the organization at almost every position, from players that enjoyed limited action with the team in 2010-11 like Jonathon Blum, Blake Geoffrion, Matt Halischuk, Cal OReilly and Linus Klasen, to developing threats like Taylor Beck, Roman Josi and Chet Pickard. Breakout Player to Watch: With the trade of Cody Franson to Toronto, some prime power-play minutes just opened up on the Predators blue line. The guy who looks to be the prime beneficiary of those minutes is Jonathon Blum. The 2007 first-rounder notched eight points in 23 games with Nashville last season after being recalled from Milwaukee in February. Though Weber and Ryan Suter will continue to eat up the big-time minutes and power play time, the Predators obviously believe in Blum, who averaged more ice-time per game than Franson last season and could fill in the 29 points he took with him once given a full season with the team. Marquee Match-Up: Feb. 9 at Ottawa - Capital Concern. Mike Fisher makes his first-ever journey to Ottawa as a member of the opposition. With the Senators in a full-on rebuilding stage and Fisher settled in Nashville, how will the fans greet their former hero? Other Dates to Watch: Oct. 20 at Vancouver - The Predators make their first trip to Rogers Arena since the Canucks bounced them from the playoffs in the second round. Reason to Get Excited: The cavalry is coming. Nashville let a lot of their veteran players walk in the off-season, which may seem like a bad thing for a team trying to make a push to the next level. But the good news is that those departures should mean a promotion for a lot of prospects and young NHLers from within the organization. Blum should be able to fill in for Franson, but beyond that, theyve already seen what players like Colin Wilson, Blake Geoffrion and Cal OReilly can do at the NHL level. The departures of players like Sullivan, Dumont, Ward and Goc opens up minutes for the young crop. That, in turn, frees up cash to potentially lock up key elements like Weber, Ryan Suter and Pekka Rinne for the long-term. Home Hardware: Few NHL coaches have consistently done more with less than Barry Trotz. Thats not to undercut the talent level of the current Predators squad, but Trotz has shepherded the team from expansion to the playoffs to contenders over the past decade largely without the benefit of a star-studded line-up. Perhaps winning a division title might get him a sniff at the Jack Adams Award. However, thats easier said than done when youre fighting off the Red Wings on a yearly basis. Still, if he hasnt done enough to win one already, who knows what it will take? On The Hot Seat: General manager David Poile has done well to assemble a competitive team through the draft. Stage 2 of the Predators plan is keeping those pieces together. He played his hand with Weber the best he could by taking him to arbitration and got scorched to the tune of $3 million more than he was offering (and $1 million less than what Weber wanted). Now hes faced with the task of re-signing Weber, Suter and Rinne before July 1 next year. The team has a wealth of cap space, but the Predators just arent a spend-to-the-cap organization. Further complicating matters is that while Weber still has one more year of restricted free agency after his current deal expires, Suter and Rinne are headed to unrestricted free agency. If Poile cant get most of the leg-work done on those three deals over the course of the regular season it may force either a painful rebuild, uncomfortably high off-season contract numbers or a single-season, go-for-broke playoff push. Its Your! Call: Nashville certainly served notice last season that they are a force to be reckoned with after they sent Anaheim packing in the playoffs and pushed Vancouver to six games before bowing out. So have they spoiled the element of surprise that may have forced other teams to underestimate them? Nashville now has a Norris nominee and a Vezina nominee, but no top-tier scoring threat up front. If teams clamp down on the Predators and try to beat them at their own game, will they be able to post a record good enough to stay afloat in the high-powered Western Conference? Martin Erat and Sergei Kostitsyns 50-point output was third worst amongst team-leaders in the NHL last season ahead of only Edmonton and Florida. The team then jettisoned 49 goals from last seasons squad through trades and unsigned free agents while acquiring only 17 goals in replacement players. The team has a lot of young talent, but leaning on players yet to play a full NHL season is a risky strategy for a traditionally low-scoring team. If the team is unable to be amongst the NHLs stingiest defences, will they be able to overcome their lack of fire-power?

CAMDEN, N.J. -- Kobe Bryant is playing some of his toughest defence yet, demanding his mother keeps her hands off his merchandise. Bryant, the Los Angeles Lakers guard, said in a court filing that he never gave his mother permission to sell mementos from his high school days and early professional basketball career. Bryant is in a court battle over whether hundreds of items -- from high school jerseys to trophies and championship rings -- can be auctioned off. Pamela Bryant said the NBA star told her the memorabilia was hers. She arranged earlier this year to auction it off through Berlin, N.J.-based Goldin Auctions and received a $450,000 advance. Last week, lawyers for the son wrote to the auction house demanding it cease the June sale. Goldin is suing to assert its right to sell. In a filing Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Camden, Kobe Bryant says his mother acknowledged to him recently that she did not have permission to sell the items. The suit was filed there because the auction house is located in southern New Jersey. Goldin dubbed the auction "The Bryant Collection," and the main page of its website shows three Lower Merion uniforms from his high school days and one familiar No. 8 Lakers jersey. Theres even a surfboard from when he won a Teen Choice award among the roughly 100 items listed. "I never told my mother that she could have my personal property, let alone consign it for public auction," Bryant wrote in the filing. He also posted on Twitter, "When u give Give GIVE and they take Take TAKE at wat point do u draw a line in the sand? (hash) hurtbeyondmeasure (hash) gavemenowarning (hash) love?" According to court filings, Pamela Bryant struck a deal in January with Goldin, which earlier this year sold a rare Honus Wagner baseball card for a record $2.1 million. She received $450,000 up front, which she intended to use for a new home in Nevada. In its court filings, Goldin says Pamela Bryant told the auction house that she asked her son five years ago what he wanted to do with the items that were in her home. "Kobe Bryant indicated to Pamela Bryant that the items belonged to her and that he had no interest in them," the auction houses attorneys wrote. So she put them in a $1,500-per-month New Jersey storage unit. The challenge came Tuesday when Goldin sent a news release announcing the auction. By days end, Kobe Bryants lawyer had sent a cease-and-desist letter telling the auction house to call off the sale and return the items to him. Kenneth Goldin, owner of the auction house, says he cant cancel the auction because hes already advanced $450,000 to Bryants mother and put money into advertising the auction. Kobe Bryants lawyer Mark Campbell said in a statement, "Mr. Bryants personal property has ended up in the possession of someone who does not lawfully own it. We look forward to resolving this legal matter through the legal system." Bryant has had a sometimes icy relationship with his mother and father, Joe "Jellybean" Bryant, a former pro basketball player who is now coaching in Thailand. In the court filing, it states that the husband and wife are overseas this week.

And the NBA, NHL, NCAA and Major League Baseball are invited, too. Sen. Dick Durbin is setting up a Judiciary Committee hearing about bounties in professional football and other major sports in the wake of news that New Orleans Saints players received extra cash for hits that hurt particular opponents. The assistant Senate majority leader, an Illinois Democrat, said Thursday he wants to examine whether federal law should make such bounty systems a crime. "Lets be real basic about it here. If this activity were taking place off of a sporting field, away from a court, nobody would have a second thought (about whether its wrong). You mean, someone paid you to go out and hurt someone?" Durbin said in a telephone interview before raising the issue on the floor of the Senate. "It goes way beyond the rules of any sporting contest, at least team contest, to intentionally inflict harm on another person for a financial reward," he said. His announcement came a day after the NFL took a harsh stand on bounties, suspending Saints head coach Sean Payton for all of next season, and indefinitely banning their former defensive co-ordinator, Gregg Williams. Saints general manager Mickey Loomis was barred for half of 2012, an assistant coach got a six-game ban, and the team also was docked two second-round draft picks and $500,000. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell still needs to decide what penalties to give players who were involved in the Saints scheme from 2009-11. "I am encouraged by what the National Football League did. What they came down with as a penalty on the New Orleans Saints was decisive and historic," Durbin said, adding that he thought the league was "taking this very seriously.dddddddddddd" But moving forward, the NFL and other leagues must "come up with standards to make sure this isnt going to happen again," he said. Otherwise, lawmakers will need to "at least explore whether it is necessary to have federal legislation in this area." One possibility, Durbin explained, would be to extend federal sports bribery laws to cover bounties, so that "if someone offers in a team sports situation some sort of value, money or otherwise, to intentionally hurt another player, that, in fact, would be a crime." In an email to the AP, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello wrote: "Commissioner Goodell has taken strong action to ensure that bounties are eliminated from the NFL. We have not heard from Senator Durbin but would be pleased to discuss the matter with him." Under the bounty system overseen in New Orleans by Williams -- who was hired in January by the St. Louis Rams -- the targeted players included quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers, Cam Newton, Brett Favre and Kurt Warner. "Knockouts" were worth $1,500 and "cart-offs" $1,000, with payments doubled or tripled for the playoffs. According to the league, Saints defensive captain Jonathan Vilma offered $10,000 to any player who knocked then-Vikings QB Favre out of the 2010 NFC championship game. Durbin isnt sure when the hearing will happen, but he said it could be two to three weeks from now. ' ' '

After coming up short in his quest for a gold medal in Sochi, Olympic silver medallist Patrick Chan isnt sure about his future in figure skating. At a press conference after the event, Chan was asked whether he was going to skate in the world championships next month in Japan, where he would be going for a fourth consecutive title. He was non-committal in his response. "I dont know if I could go to another one now. Im pretty exhausted," Chan said. It definitely does drain you and you lose perspective." Chan told CBCs Olympic Daytime that all hes focused on is enjoying the rest of the Games. "Right now I have in mind this hockey game Im going to, USA-Russia, and enjoying my time here and celebrating with my teammates," he said. "Were young, we have a lot ahead in our lives, but were going to remember this moment together." Chan was just behind 19-year-old Japanese phenom Yuzuru Hanyu after the mens short program was completed, essentially making it a two-man race for the gold medal. The door swung wide open for Chan after Hanyu stumbled through his long program. Skating immediately after Hanyu, Chan looked to be on his way to gold after landing his first quad. But the three-time reigning world champion stumbled through the rest of his program and couldnt overtake Hanyu, finishing the long program with a score of 178.10, behind Hanyus 178.64. That left Chan with the silver for the second consecutive Olympics. Though the disappointment was palpable, Chan remained positive, and continued to speak in terms of his overall career. "For the first time I can say Im a seven-time national champion, three-time world champion, [and] two-time silver medallist at the Olympic Games and thats huge," he said. "I dont know any other skater who has done that. Its a tremendous career. "I dont want to look at the medals and successes Ive had, I want to look at how Ive changed the sport." No Canadian man has ever won a singles gold in Olympic figure skating. Brian Orser won silver in 1984 and again in 1988, the latter of which saw him edged by a tenth of a point by American Brian Boitano. Elvis Stojko, a three-time world champion as well, won Olympic silver twice, in 1994 and 1998.

ATLANTA -- The Washington Wizards moved up the Eastern Conference standings with their first win in Atlanta in six years. The Hawks are in a free-fall in the conference and must decide if a trade-deadline move is needed to stop their losing streak. John Wall scored 21 points and Washington recovered after almost blowing a 20-point lead to beat the reeling Hawks 114-97 on Wednesday night. "We needed it real bad," said Washingtons Trevor Ariza, who made an improbable 75-foot shot to end the third quarter. "Especially if were trying to make the playoffs these last 28 games. This one was big for us. Especially knowing that we havent won here in a while. I think that gives us a little bit of momentum." Paul Millsap had 21 points and 11 rebounds, and Elton Brand, a fill-in starter at centre, had 20 points and 11 boards for the Hawks, who have lost seven straight. Trevor Ariza and Bradley Beal each had 19 points for the Wizards, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Washington ended an 11-game skid in Atlanta, winning for the first time since Jan. 11, 2008. The Wizards moved a half-game ahead of Atlanta in the battle for fifth place in the Eastern Conference. "We know its a two- or three-game spread from the third spot and its two or three games away from being in the eighth spot or out of the playoffs, so its definitely a tight race right now," Wall said. "Weve just got to find a way to get on a streak. We havent been on a good streak. I think its time for our team. We deserve a winning streak." The Hawks, who trailed by 20 points in the first half, made a third-quarter charge to twice cut the deficit to one point. The Wizards closed the period with 3-pointers by Martell Webster and Ariza. Arizas 3-pointer was the shot of the game -- a buzzer-beater from near the free throw line on the other end of the floor to end the period. "Once I let it go, it felt good," Ariza said. "I tried to do my best to go to the bench not get too excited because we had another quarter to go. Im just happy we got the win." Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer said the 3s by Webster and Ariza turned the momentum. "I think its a very fine margin of error for every team in the NBA," Budenholzer said. "I think we had it down to two. Webster hit a tough 3-pointer from the corner. Then we let our guard down a little bit, and (Ariza) made a shot from the three-quarter court. It went from a two-point game to an eight-point game. That was a tough 15-second stretch." Washington had lost three straight and five of six before beating the Hawks. The Hawks had only nine players in uniform. Gustavo Ayon, who had been the fill-in starting centre, was held out after hurting his right shoulder in Tuesday nights loss at Indiana. Guard DeMarre Carroll missed his third straight game with a left hamstring strain. Brand, 34, who has averaged 16 minutes as a backup, played 35 minutes and set his season high for points, while matching his high for rebounds. Brand wouldnt blame the teams losing streak on a shortage of players. "It seems like were dealing with a myriad of injuries, but we definitely have enough players to win," Brand said. "We need to find a way to win and get this monkey off our back and stay in the race." The Hawks have a severe shortage of players at centre. They already have lost All-Star Al Horford for the season after he had surgery to repair his torn right pectoral muscle. Horfords backup, Pero Antic, is out indefinitely with a stress fracture in his right ankle. Budenholzer said the injuries do not add urgency to make a deal before Thursdays trade deadline. Wizards centre Marcin Gortat took advantage of the Hawks lack of size, scoring 14 points with 12 rebounds. Martell Webster had 13 points. NOTES: The official play-by-play listed Arizas shot as a 57-footer, but replays confirmed the shot was much longer, launched from near the Hawks free-throw line. ... Washington had seven players score in double figures. ... Ariza made five 3-pointers. ... Kyle Korver made his first 3-pointer of the game late in the first half, extending his NBA record to 122 consecutive games with a 3. ... G Cartier Martin, also making his fourth start, filled in for Carroll and scored only four points.

ST. LOUIS -- St. Louis Rams offensive tackle Rodger Saffold will be out at least a month because of a right knee injury. Coach Jeff Fisher said Monday that Saffold has a third-degree MCL sprain and other damage to the knee, but said it was not season-ending. "Hes going to miss a number of weeks. How many weeks, I cant speculate now," Fisher said. "Hes got a pretty good attitude about it. Hes happy with the news that we got as a result of the MRI." Saffold was hurt advancing a fumble in the first quarter Sunday in the Rams 31-28 victory over the Redskins. He was a surprise starter after being hospitalized with a neck strain in Detroit after the opener and listed as questionable prior to the game. Wayne Hunter, acquired late in the preseason from the Jets in exchange for tackle Jason Smith, is the likely starter this week at Chicago. Fisher did his best to dispel rumours that running back Steven Jackson had been benched for spiking the ball in protest after he was ruled short of the goal line on a third-down carry from the 1, but was held out with a minor groin injury but could have returned in case rookie Daryl Richardson faltered. "His groin was tight, we didnt want to risk further injury," Fisher said. "He could have come back in the game, and he was OK with it. He understands this is a long season "When youre competing in a ballgame like that, you dont want to set yourself back. Hes clearly not ruled out for this game." Fisher repeated his assertion from Sunday that Jackson had been spiking the ball because the player thought hed scored. Jacksons touchdown move is rolling the dice. "Im 100 per cent sure the reason he spiked the ball was because youre allowed to spike the ball after you score a touchdown," Fisher said. "Listen, it didnt have anything to do with anything else but that."

Wholesale NFL Jerseys .E.I. Rocket, Josh Currie has never produced the way he is right now.CHICAGO - Former lightweight champion Benson Henderson won a disputed split decision over Josh Thomson in a five-round lightweight fight at UFC Chicago on Saturday night, likely ending Thomsons career. Henderson (20-3) received winning scores of 48-47 and 49-46, and the other judge scored it 48-47 for Thomson (20-6). The announcement drew boos from the United Center crowd. "Train this hard for this long, its such a long camp and I see my title shot disappear," said Thomson, who fought most of the fight with a broken right hand. "This will probably be it." Thomson and Henderson have been major players in the MMA lightweight division throughout their careers, but the fight was the first time they squared off. Thomson controlled the first round, starting with a takedown and ending round with another fierce takedown, but injured his hand in the process. The injury didnt appear to be a factor as the 35-year-old held his own against the former champ. Thomson also was spurned by a split decision in a fight against Gilbert Melendez in a Strikeforce fight May 9, 2012. "The Gilbert fight that to me was a me a close fight, but I can say how it went either way, but this fight, I won with one hand. I beat the former UFC champion," Thomson said. Thomson indicated to his corner after the second round that he thought he broke his hand. Henderson came out aggressive in the third with a flurry of punches and a late takedown. In the fifth, Thomson landed a right hand and a sweeping leg kick, then got a hold of a kick attempt by Henderson and pushed him into the side of the cage.dddddddddddd Henderson was able to get in one last body shot at the end of the round that ended with some boos from the crowd. "I think I definitely did enough to deserve to get my hand raised," Henderson said. "I like Ws. I like getting my hand raised, any way I can get it, by the skin of my teeth, by any means." Henderson gave up the title after being submitted by Anthony Pettis on an armbar at UFC 164. Henderson had a seven-fight winning streak going into the fight against Pettis, the second-longest run in lightweight history. Henderson is aiming for a third fight against Pettis with the belt on the line this summer, but it is unclear if he will get that chance. On Thursday, UFC President Dana White wouldnt guarantee another rematch for Henderson against Pettis for the lightweight title if he won. "I would say, my opinion in this matter counts for about that much, probably less than that," Henderson said. "It doesnt matter at all what I think or how I feel. It matters to D.W." Henderson isnt worried how many fighters he will have to take on to get another chance at Pettis. "I will take on the entire top 10. The entire top 10, bring them down." Earlier, Stipe Miocic unanimously outpointed Gabriel Gonzaga in a three-round heavyweight fight. Miocic improved to 11-1, and Gonzaga dropped to 16-8. Also, Donald Cerrone (22-6) rebounded from a loss to Pettis last year in Chicago by knocking out Adriano Martins in the first round. Cerrone struck Martins in the head with a right leg kick. ' ' '

The Raptors wont travel far for a while as they dont leave the eastern time zone until March. The Raptors really let one get away on Friday night in Philadelphia against the 76ers. Toronto built a 19-point lead in the third quarter, then lost the third quarter by 16. Toronto reclaimed a double-digit lead in the fourth, but Jrue Holiday took over down the stretch, scoring a layup to send the game into overtime, then scoring all 12 Sixers points in the extra session. In the end, Philly prevailed 108-101. "In the NBA, its hard to play with a lead," guard Kyle Lowry said. "Everyone always says that. But when you want to become an elite team and that team wants to win and make the playoffs, you dont have an ease mode. You have to go hard and try to win every game and keep it going." Jose Calderon scored 13,, but didnt play much in the second half due to his inability to keep Holiday in front of him.dddddddddddd Lowry chipped in 11. The Raptors shot 44 percent from long distance, including a 4-for-5 performance from Ross. Unfortunately, they committed 18 turnovers. which led to 16 Sixers points. L.A. had won two in a row before LeBron James and company dispatched the Lakers, 99-90. Kobe Bryant, as always, led the Lakers with 22 points. Metta World Peace was second with 16 points, followed by a double-double from Dwight Howard (12 points and 16 rebounds). Pau Gasol returned from concussion symptoms Thursday night and came off the bench with 12 points. Obviously, this season has been a disappointment, but a good spot to begin improvement would be on the road. The Lakers are 5-12 away from the Staples Center, which is the third fewest road victories in the Western Conference. "Were 5-12 because we played awful," admitted head coach Mike DAntoni. "I dont think they care where they play. They shouldnt. Sometimes its even easier to find yourself on the road and come together as a team. We have to look at it that way. Well be ready." The Lakers have won four straight in this series and 11 of their last 14 in Toronto. ' ' '

Ondrej Pavelec turned aside 27 shots for his third shutout of the season and ninth of his career, while Blake Wheeler scored twice and added an assist for Winnipeg, which is 12-5-1 as the host and has won seven of 10 games overall (7-2-1). Tanner Glass and Tim Stapleton also scored in a winning effort. The Jets are tied with Boston for the most home victories this season. "We focused a little more and executed our game a little better," said Glass. "I dont think, you know theres no big secret we just executed a little better than we did in past nights and it makes for a little easier game." Jets center Bryan Little (back) did not play Thursday and could miss tonights game against the Penguins. Winnipeg and Pittsburgh are playing the second of four meetings tonight and the Jets escaped with a 2-1 win back on Oct. 17 up north. Glass had a goal in that one and Pavelec made 28 saves to halt a season-opening three-game losing streak for Winnipeg. Michalek posted the lone goal for the Penguins. Pittsburgh has won 11 of the last 13 games against the Winnipeg franchise, outscoring the opposition by a 49-27 margin in that time. The Penguins have been able to survive a rash of injuries this season. Superstar Sidney Crosby is still dealing with concussion-related symptoms and defensemen Paul Martin (leg), Zbynek Michalek (concussion) and Kris Letang (nose/concussion) are dealing with their own issues. Martin could return tonight against the Jets and is listed as questionable. The Penguins have won two in a row and five of their last nine games, including Tuesdays 3-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks in the Steel City. Chris Kunitz, James Neal and Tyler Kennedy all scored and Evgeni Malkin dished out three assists for Pittsburgh, which got 36 saves from Marc-Andre Fleury. The goaltender made 17 stops in the third period alone. "They did some things in the third that we should have been better aware of," said Pittsburgh coach Dan Bylsma. "We knew they were going to come out harder and should have done a better job of handling that. We did respond better in the second half of the period and the PK and Fleury came up big at the end." Pittsburgh will hit the road tonight and is 9-8-2 as the visitor this season. It sits four points behind rival Philadelphia for Atlantic Division bragging rights and will not have blueliner Deryk Engelland the next three games after he was suspended for an illegal check to the head of Chicago forward Marcus Kruger. Malkin has 15 points (6g, 9a) during a six-game scoring streak for a Penguins team averaging 4.4 goals per game over its last five tests. James Neal is riding a six-game point streak as well, with five goals and three assists over that stretch. Steve Sullivan is one point shy of 700 in his career and Bylsma sits two wins from tying Michel Therrien for second-most in franchise history with 135.

FREDERICTON -- Canadas Cathy King remains unbeaten at the world senior curling championships. Kings rink from St. Albert, Alta., cruised to an 11-3 win over Japans Mikiko Tsuchiya on Monday to improve to 3-0 and atop the round-robin pool. "Theres always room for improvement," said third Carolyn Morris. "Anytime you miss a shot, theres room for improvement. "But I like our cohesiveness. Were very much a team that sticks together through missed shots and made shots. We have each others backs." Canada stole four in the fifth end en route to the victory. The world senior event is being held in conjunction with the world mixed doubles championship. Morris is the Canadian teams most experienced player but this marks the first time that shes played in the event representing her native country. Her son, Sean, is a former world junior champion representing Canada in 1994. Seans wife, Cori, won an Olympic silver medal in 2010 playing lead for Cheryl Bernards Canadian team. Morriss daughter, Kim, won the Scottish womens title in 2006 and played in the world championship event in Grande Prairie, Alta. Added Desjardins: "We wanted to get our draw weight back (after Sunday), which we did. We drew very well in that game. The ice was terrific and it was easy to draw (Monday) and were slowly getting our confidence back. Thats what we needed." DOVER, Del. -- Season ticket holders on Tuesday were given an official voice in the Los Angeles Dodgers bankruptcy case, winning two seats on the teams creditors committee. The U.S. trustee for Delawares bankruptcy court agreed to appoint two representatives of the season ticket holders to the Dodgers official committee of unsecured creditors. In return, lawyers for an ad hoc group of season ticket holders withdrew a motion seeking court approval of an official committee of ticket holders. Lawyers argued in the motion that season ticket holders had invested millions of dollars in the team and deserved an official voice in the bankruptcy, but the motion was opposed by both the Dodgers and the creditors committee. "Our concern is that there would have been protracted litigation over the appointment of an official season ticket holders committee while significant matters are being decided in the bankruptcy cases that will determine the fate of the Dodgers franchise," Robbin Itkin, a lawyer for the ticket holders, said in a statement released Tuesday. "This resolution allows for the immediate participation of two season ticket holders on the official committee so that hopefully the perspectives and salient interests of the season tickets holders will be represented in the actions of the official committee." Meanwhile, lawyers for the Dodgers and Major League Baseball continued their war of words as they gear up for a court fight starting next week that will determine the fate of the ball club. In a court filing Monday, lawyers for commissioner Bud Selig reiterated accusations made in court papers last month that Dodgers owner Frank McCourt had siphoned off more than US$180 million in revenues from the club for personal and business obligations that had nothing to do with baseball. "The Dodgers are in bankruptcy because Mr. McCourt has taken almost $190 million out of the club and has completely alienated the Dodgers fan base," wrote lawyers for Selig, arguing that the money had been "looted.dddddddddddd" The Dodgers released a statement claiming the league had again "mischaracterized the facts with inflammatory allegations that are not supported by the evidence." "As the commissioner knows and as our legal documents have clearly shown, he approved and praised the structure of the team about which he belatedly complains," the statement read. "We look forward to the opportunity to show the truth next week in court." In their own court filings, Dodgers lawyers renewed their attacks on Selig, accusing him of deliberately starving the club of needed cash and destroying the reputation of the team and its management in an effort to seize control and force a sale of the Dodgers. The Dodgers sought bankruptcy protection in June, blaming Selig for refusing to approve a renegotiated multibillion-dollar TV deal with Fox Sports that McCourt was counting on to keep the franchise afloat. The Dodgers are now asking Judge Kevin Gross to approve an auction of the teams television rights as the best path to exit bankruptcy. But the league is asking for permission to file its own reorganization plan for the Dodgers, which calls for the team to be sold. Gross has scheduled four days of hearings starting Monday to consider the dueling motions. Lawyers for Selig argue that any plan by the Dodgers to sell television rights without the leagues approval is "dead on arrival" and would spell the end of the ball club. They argue that such a sale would breach the Dodgers existing contract with Fox Sports, leaving the team subject to substantial legal claims, while also providing grounds for termination from the league for failure to abide by its covenants. HOUSTON -- Thierry Henry scored the go-ahead goal in the 47th minute, and Jonathan Steele had a goal and an assist to help the New York Red Bulls rout the Houston Dynamo 4-1 on Sunday. The Red Bulls (13-9-6) took advantage of a short-handed Houston lineup to score three second-half goals, becoming the third road team to win at BBVA Compass Stadium since it opened in 2012. Eric Alexander, Jonathan Steele and Lloyd Sam also scored for New York, which became the first team in the series to win on the road. Since 2006, New York was just 0-4-3 at Houston. Jason Johnson scored for Houston (10-10-7). Two minutes into the second half, Houston defender Adam Moffat lost Henry, and Henry scored just inside the near post. Ricardo Clark replaced Moffat -- who left with a left quad injury -- in the 53rd minute. Steele and Sam rounded out the scoring in the 59th and 89th minutes, beating Houston goalie Tally Hall. The Dynamo have allowed 12 goals in their last four games overall. The teams traded goals in the first 18th minutes, with New York converting on its first scoring chance of the game and Houston tying it minutes later. In the 14th minute, the Red Bulls ran past the Houston defence and Alexander ripped a shot high into the net after Jonathan Steele feathered a pass through the Dynamo. Johnson tied it in the 18th minute after taking a pass from Alex Lopex. Johnson settled the ball and pushed his shot into the net with the outside of his left foot to make it 1-1. New York goalie Luis Robles made the save of the match in the 28th minute to keep it tied. Houstons Kofi Sarkodie crossed to Will Bruin in the penalty area. Bruin tried to beat Robles low to the left, but Robles got his left arm extended and kept the ball out of the net. Both teams played without their top players. New Yorks Tim Cahill is up with the Australian national team, and Houstons Brad Davis was called up to the U.S. squad on Saturday. The Dynamo also played without Boniek Garcia (Honduras) and Jermaine Taylor (Jamaica), who were on recall to their respective national teams. After winning four of six in a stretch from June 30 to Aug. 3, the Red Bulls cooled off, losing two of three before rebounding with two straight wins. Houston has struggled of late. After winning four of six in July and August, the Dynamo just completed a three-game road trip and have just one tie (0-1-3) on Sept. 1 at Chicago.

If the Browns chose to wait on Gase

March 10th, 2014 at 03:13 am

(Sports Network) - Canucks head coach Alain Vigneault feels his team is better with defenseman Sami Salo in the lineup. Hell put that theory to the test when the blueliner makes his return to the ice this evening against the Edmonton Oilers. Salo has missed the Canucks past six games due to a concussion suffered on a low hit by the Bruins Brad Marchand back on Jan. 7, a hit that earned Marchand a five-game suspension following a major call for clipping. Vancouver went a respectable 3-2-1 without Salo, but was in danger of losing three in a row during the regular season for the first time since last January prior to Saturdays 4-3 victory over San Jose. The return of Salo should bring stability to the Canucks game on the ice. "When hes in our lineup, our record is much more on the positive side than the negative side," said Vigneault. "That has something to do with him being able to contribute both offensively and defensively. [Hes] such a smart player both with and without the puck." Without Salo, the Canucks gutted out a win over the Sharks thanks to a pair of goals from Cody Hodgson. He has seven goals and seven assists over his past 16 games and ranks fourth among all rookies with 13 goals and 29 points. His effort helped Vancouver win for the first time on its six-game homestand after opening things up with loss to the Ducks and Kings. "It was a great win for us," Hodgson said following his first career two-goal game. "We havent been playing the way we wanted to the last couple of games." Ryan Kesler and David Booth both scored and Roberto Luongo made 23 saves to reach a personal milestone. He surpassed Kirk McLean (211) for the most wins in franchise history. Vancouver leads the Northwest Division by eight points over Colorado, but sits five back of Detroit for the lead in both the Western Conference and NHL overall standings. Edmonton ranks near the bottom of the standings with 40 points, but can win consecutive games tonight for the first time since Nov. 22-25 this evening thanks to last nights 2-1 shootout win over San Jose. Taylor Hall had the game-winner in the fourth round of the shootout and Devan Dubnyk made 44 saves and another three stops in the tiebreaker to help the Oilers snap a three-game slide with just their third win in 19 contests. "It feels great right now, every win feels good," said Dubnyk. "We need to start having this feeling more and change things in here. But right now well take every win we can get." After being added to the All-Star roster as an injury replacement, Jordan Eberle scored in regulation for Edmonton. He leads the club with 18 goals, 27 assists and 45 points and scored for the first time in three games since returning from a knee injury. The Oilers have lost five straight and 12 of their past 13 on the road. They split a pair of home games with the Canucks back in October, but dropped a 5-3 decision in Vancouver in the previous meeting on Dec. 26. The Canucks have won six of their past nine versus the Oilers overall as well as six of seven, eight of 10 and nine of the past 12 encounters in Vancouver.

The skier from Gatineau, Que., captured the bronze medal in a mens freestyle aerials World Cup event on an artificial ramp Saturday.CLEVELAND -- Another qualified coaching candidate has eluded the Browns. Ken Whisenhunts decision to accept Tennessees opening leaves Cleveland as one of just three NFL franchises still searching for a head coach. Whisenhunt, who guided Arizona to a Super Bowl, came close to being hired by the Browns last year and interviewed with the team on Saturday. San Diegos loss on Sunday in the AFC playoffs freed up teams to make offers to Whisenhunt and he chose the Titans after it appeared he was headed to Detroit. Its not known if the Browns tried to outbid the Titans for the well-regarded 51-year-old. With Whisenhunt no longer in the mix, the Browns moved into the third week of their quest to replace Rob Chudzinski without any clear front-runner, but with a new former NFL head coach on their list. The team has interviewed at least five known candidates and the Browns reportedly met Monday with former Titans coach Mike Munchak, also in consideration with the Lions. The 53-year-old Munchak, a Hall of Fame lineman, went 22-26 in three seasons with the Titans, who fired him on Jan. 4, ending his 30-plus-years association with the franchise. Clevelands degree of interest in Munchak isnt known since the team is not commenting on any interviews and Browns owner Jimmy Haslam and CEO Joe Banner have maintained a low profile since dumping Chudzinski after one season. And while there may not be a current favourite to take over as Clevelands seventh full-time coach since 1999, there are signs that Denver offensive co-ordinator Adam Gase could be the Browns top choice. The 35-year-old Gase was the first candidate contacted by the Browns, but he informed them -- along with the Minnesota Vikings -- that he wanted to wait until after the playoffs to be considered. "I told both teams that were interested in me that I appreciated it and I was going to wait until after our season had concluded," Gase said on Jan. 3. "They were great about it. They said they appreciated me being up front and honest about it, and I thought that was the best decision for whaat we are trying to accomplish with our team.dddddddddddd" Its not known if Gase has agreed to an interview with either team. NFL rules prohibit teams from offering jobs to assistant coaches who are still in the playoffs. Gases decision to delay any interviews raised some flags about whether hes actually ready to be a head coach. But as long as hes paired with quarterback Peyton Manning, Gases profile will continue to grow and hell undoubtedly be coveted if he waits another year. Following Denvers win on Sunday over San Diego, Manning praised Gase during his postgame news conference for his play calling in helping the Broncos advance to Sundays AFC Championship against New England. In his first season as Denvers offensive co-ordinator, the Broncos scored an NFL record 606 points and led the league with 457.3 yards per game and 340.3 yards passing. His resume is impressive, but even if the Browns meet with Gase, its not a given he will be hired. Hes never been a head coach, and Haslam and Banner said they were determined to find a "strong winner who knows how to win football games" as they began looking for their second coach in just over a year. If the Browns chose to wait on Gase, they run the risk of the coaching talent pool drying up and being in a desperate situation should he turn them down. Cleveland has waited until after the Super Bowl before. Following the 2004 season, the Browns hired Romeo Crennel in the hours after the Super Bowl. The Browns are already losing a public relations war as the search has dragged on. After New England offensive co-ordinator Josh McDaniels withdrew his name from consideration for Clevelands opening last week, it heightened the perception that Cleveland is not an attractive job. It hasnt helped that some national reports have described the Browns situation as "toxic" and "radioactive." Haslam and Banner have also interviewed Seattle defensive co-ordinator Dan Quinn, Arizona defensive co-ordinator Todd Bowles and Green Bay quarterbacks coach Ben McAdoo. ' ' '

DAEGU, South Korea -- Usain Bolt didnt need his spikes anymore, at least not on this day. A few minutes after winning his heat Friday in the 200-metre semifinals at the world championships, the Jamaican showboater reared back and tossed a shoe into the upper deck at Daegu Stadium. One lucky fan got the souvenir of a lifetime. "Back to my normal self," Bolt said, five days after being disqualified from the 100 final because of a false start. "Im trying to enjoy the game as much as possible." As if thats a surprise. Besides setting records and winning gold medals, Bolt has become the star of the sport because of antics on the track. And Fridays show was more of the same. The Jamaican did a little dance in Lane 6 before reeling off a pseudo drum roll with his fingers. Then he patted down his hair as he was being introduced to the packed crowd. When the camera returned to him, he stood ready to box. With more cheers and the starter about to ask the runners to take their marks, Bolt put his finger to his lips and shushed them all. Once he got going, Bolt immediately gained ground on the rest of the runners in the field and had a clear lead by the time he came out of the bend. And while running for the finish line, the tall Jamaican had plenty of time to look up at the giant screen and see he was all alone. That was enough for him to slow down and coast into the final with a time of 20.31 seconds. "I know Im still the best, so Im focused on it," said Bolt, who is also expected to run for Jamaica in the 4x100 relay. Bolt came into the championships as the man to watch, and the man to beat. "Its Bolt. You can do nothing," said Reto Schenkel of Switzerland, who finished last in Bolts heat. "Hes tall. He makes one step and I make five steps. Its crazy. Its Bolt." After winning a sprint double at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in record-setting time, he broke his 100 and 200 world records at the 2009 worlds in Berlin. Daegu looked like it would be another stop along the way to a third straight 100-200 double, but then came the false start. He promised he would be back in the 200, and he has so far not disappointed. His time in the second heat of the semifinals was second only to Christophe Lemaitre of France, who won the opening heat in 20.17. "Expect always the best from me," Bolt said. "I always go out there and do my best."

Ainge said Monday he is hoping to keep intact the aging trio of Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce, who brought the Celtics their first NBA championship in 22 years in 2008.DETROIT -- The Detroit Red Wings got much younger this year, rebuilding with rookies and prospects pushed onto the ice. For much of the lockout-delayed season, it didnt look good for them. The storied franchise used to chase Stanley Cup titles with key players in their late 30s and 40s such as Nicklas Lidstrom, Chris Chelios, Steve Yzerman, Brett Hull and Larry Murphy. Not anymore. As the Chicago Blackhawks are now finding out, the Red Wings are much better than they were during the regular season thanks to an improved cast of inexperienced players. "Weve had great growth from within, I think the most since Ive been in the National Hockey League for sure," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said Sunday. "That may be because we have a different type of team. We got a whole bunch of kids, so we have a chance for growth." Red Wings rookie Brendan Smith scored the winning goal Saturday in Detroits 4-1 win at Chicago that tied the series 1-1. The top-seeded Blackhawks won the opener by the same 4-1 score. "We knew they were going to come back and play much better than they did in Game 1," Chicago captain Jonathan Toews said. "Obviously, we didnt quite match the effort." When the puck drops Monday night in Detroit for Game 3, Toews hopes his team is ready to bounce back. "Theres no time to waste in this series," Toews said. "We know going into their building its even more difficult." It will be even more challenging for Chicago if Toews cant produce as he did in the 48-game regular season. Toews had 23 goals, tying Patrick Kane for the team lead and trailing just four players in the league. However, he is struggling to score for a third straight post-season. Toews is in an eight-game playoff slump that dates to last year. He has just three goals combined in three postseasons since scoring seven goals to help Chicago win the Cup in 2010. He had seven goals the previous post-season -- his first -- when Detroit eliminated the Blackhawks in the Western Conference finals. Henrik Zetterberg had a lot to do with holding Toews without a point in Game 2, an accomplishment that didnt surprise Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard. &quoot; Most nights, hes the best player on the ice," Howard said.dddddddddddd "No different from (Saturday), the way he was all over Toews the whole game, shutting him down. Were going to need that for the whole series." The Red Wings would also benefit if their inexperienced players figure out a way to avoid fading into the background. Before Smiths go-ahead goal on Saturday, first-year player Damien Brunner and rookie Gustav Nyquist also scored winning goals this post-season -- in overtime against Anaheim. Teammate Joakim Andersson ranks among rookie scoring leaders. The 27-year-old Brunner, too old to be a candidate for the Calder Trophy given to the rookie of the year, has followed up a 26-point regular season with four goals in the playoffs to match Johan Franzen for the team lead. He also has three assists. Calder finalist Brandon Saad has only one assist in seven post-season games for the Blackhawks. The 20-year-old forward had 27 points during the regular season. Brunner has insisted it doesnt bother him to be out of the running for the Calder, and sounded even more thankful on Sunday that he waited to make the jump from the Swiss League. The 5-foot-11, 184-pound forward was banged around on the ice quite a bit and had growing pains off it, dealing with a lot of travel after his longest trip last year was a 2 1/2-hour bus ride. "You kind of think its not that big of a deal when you come over, but after a couple trips and the hours you lose, especially when you come back home, its tough," Brunner said. "Its really tough." While Babcocks job behind the bench was tougher this year than it had been the past seven seasons with veteran-filled rosters, he relished the opportunity to lead the young Red Wings. "Its the most fun Ive had coaching in a couple years, by far, just because we have a real enthusiastic group," Babcock said. "At the start of the year, we werent a good team. We all understood that, but we buckled down and we got better. Its been fun for us. If you would have asked me before the playoffs, I wouldve told you the same thing. Then suddenly you have a little success in the playoffs -- and its more fun." ' ' '

OTTAWA (CIS) – Soccer players Emily Brown from Wilfrid Laurier University and Marco Visintin from the University of British Columbia are the CIS female and male athletes of the week for the period ending Sept. 16, 2012. Brown, a second-year business student from Waterloo, Ont., scored five of her teams six goals last weekend, including both game winners, as the fourth-ranked Golden Hawks (5-0-1) remained undefeated in conference play with road wins against Western, 2-1, and Windsor, 4-1. The 5-foot-8 forward did all the scoring for Laurier in Saturdays victory over Western, netting the difference maker in the 65th minute, and was even more productive on Sunday against Windsor when she registered a hat trick. The 2011 OUA West rookie of the year has an OUA-leading nine goals in six contests this fall. UPEI soccer player Chanelle Roy, Concordia rugby player Erika Ikonomopoulos and Regina soccer player Meagan Cormier were also nominated for the womens award. ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Ryan Lilja will step out of retirement to reunite with Peyton Manning. The veteran offensive lineman agreed to terms Wednesday with the Denver Broncos, who are desperate for a starting centre following a season ending knee injury to Dan Koppen. Lilja, who turns 32 in October, has quite a bit of familiarity with Manning after playing guard for six seasons in Indianapolis. And while Jeff Saturday was Mannings customary centre with the Colts, hes now working as an ESPN analyst. The 6-foot-2, 290-pound Lilja made a similar switch last season as he went from guard to centre for Kansas City. After the season, he announced his intention to retire. But his retirement didnt last all that long. Koppen tore his left ACL in a drill last weekend after the Broncos brought him back last month to fill in for J.D. Walton, whos had a setback in his return from ankle surgery. Manny Ramirez, who took most of the snaps at centre during Denvers off-season practices, was working with Manning the last few days in training camp. He sent a few hikes high, but nothing out of Mannings reach. The team also recently brought in Steve Vallos, a six-year veteran who has played in Seattle, Cleveland, Philadelphia and Jacksonville. "We always hate losing people for the season, but we will march on," coach John Fox said. These days, the offensive line responsible for keeping Manning safe and secure is pretty banged up. All-Pro left tackle Ryan Clady has been limited at training camp due to a right shoulder. Tackle Orlando Franklin (toe, shoulder) and guard Chris Kuper (ankle) are also coming off surgeries. Franklin is back with the starters, while Kuper is going through drills on an adjacent field in shorts. On Wednesday, the Broncos received another scare when cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie went down with a left ankle injury and had to be carted off the field. "I am not over concerned," Fox said after practice. "But any time a player misses time, I am concerned. We will just get him healthy and get him back out there." Guard Justin Boren also had to be helped off the field with a big toe ailment.

Kerry Fraser wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca! Hi Kerry, Regarding the goal scored by Matt Duchene in Mondays game between Nashville and Colorado, it seems that the referees didnt call the play offside because the puck was deflected by Scott Hannans stick and Craig Smiths left skate (both Predators players) into the Predators defensive zone, making it a back pass and thus no offside position should be considered. Barry Trotz said after the game, "The league already verified that it should have been an offside." Could you clarify what is to be considered a back pass into the defensive zone? Is a deflection by a defending player to be considered as such or not? Who do you think got it right: the officials on the ice or "the league?" Also, we see Barry Trotz strongly arguing with the referees after the play. Shouldnt only the captains be allowed to ask the referees about their interpetation of the play and call? Thank you for sharing your insight on all those rules issues that occur in our game. Gauthier Dupont Gauthier, The League did the right thing shortly after the game and issued a statement that the linesman erred in his interpretation of Rule 83.1 and the play should have been blown dead for the off-side at the Nashville blue line. The misinterpretation resulted from the very question of what constitutes a "back pass" as described in the last paragraph of Rule 83.1 - If a player legally carries or passes the puck back into his own defending zone while a player of the opposing team is in such defending zone, the off-side shall be ignored and play permitted to continue. The key word in the rule is "legally" as it applies to a defending player transporting the puck back into his own zone. The intent and spirit of the rule allows for situations where a player has possession and control of the puck and either cycles back into his defending zone or clearly passes the puck back toward a teammate within that zone. This player decision could be made to avoid a check in the neutral zone, to buy some time and maintain puck possession while other teammates are changing at the players bench or to regroup for an offensive attack through the neutral zone that might be clogged with traffic. For it to be determined that the puck was returned to the defending zone through a legal back pass, the player executing this pass must have full possession and control of the puck. In addition, any action by an attacking player that causes a deflection/rebound off a defending player in the neutral zone back into the defending zone (i.e. stick check, body check, physical contact), a delayed off-side shall be signalled by the linesman. A long stretch pass was intended for Colorado forward Matt Duchene as he snuck behind the Nashville defencemen. Scott Hannans desperation attempt to bat the puck down caused a redirection of the puck which then further deflected off the skate of Craig Smith. In both cases, this form of contact with the puck did not constitute possession or control by either of the two Nashville players. It would be no different had the puck been deflected off the shin guard or body of Hannan, followed by the skate of Smith which delayed the puck from crossing their blue line ahead of Matt Duchene. Off-side is the call! Barry Trotz was understandably upset with the linesmans ruling on this play. In an emotionally charged play such as this, the referee or linesman can go directly to the coach and offer his interpretation. I found that delivering the message directly to the coach at times such as this was far more effective than through the captain or alternate. Many of you will probably ask why one of the other officials on the ice didnt blow the whistle if they observed the obvious off-side play or if the goal could subsequently be disallowed following a group conference held with the linesman? Both are reasonable actions and alternatives to getting this play right. Let me provide you with my thoughts, references from the rules and final authority on the subject.dddddddddddd. First, let me say that the linesmen in the NHL are the best in the world at their trade. They make excellent judgments on extremely close plays that are executed at lightning speed. Replays almost always prove them correct. On very rare occasions, mistakes are made. Rule 31.4 says the "The referees shall not halt the game for any infractions of the rules concerning Rule 83 - Off-side, or any violation of Rule 81 - Icing. Determining infractions of these rules is the duty of the linesmen unless, by virtue of some accident, the linesman is prevented from doing so, in which case, the duties of the linesman shall be assumed by a referee until play is stopped." ("Accident" means being blocked out, bumped, fallen down or anything would cause the linesman to miss an off-side play.) At a training camp meeting a few years ago, the referees posed the question to allow for a referee to blow the whistle where an obvious off-side had been missed by a linesman. The flat out answer was only if the linesman is unable to make the call through one of the above reasons listed. Furthermore, the referees were told to lay off if the linesman made a wave-off signal which signified he saw the play and made a judgment on the play. If it was a wrong judgment, the linesmen were prepared to live with it no differently than a minor penalty missed by the referee! In certain situations, we often see the officials huddle at the referees crease to determine legitimate goals following potential goalkeeper interference, high-stick infractions where injury has resulted, high hits/illegal hits to the head and pucks shot out of play by the defending team from their defending zone. Conferences by the officials are designed to get the call right and the initial decision made by an official have been overturned through a meeting of the minds. By what authority, you might ask, would the goal be disallowed since Rule 83.4 states that, "Other than in situations involving a delayed off-side and the puck being shot on goal, no goal can be disallowed after the fact for an off-side violation, except for the human factor involved in blowing the whistle." I would suggest that a conference by the officials would have been well served and justified in this case since it was a rule interpretation error and not a visual judgment error made by the linesman on the blue line which the spirit of the above rule implies. When a linesman has made an error on icing for any reason, the face-off is taken to centre ice without question. If through a conference of the officiating crew, it was determined that the puck was deflected by the Nashville players and not through any "back pass" of the puck, I believe the call could be reversed and the goal disallowed. Finally, I provide Rule 31.2 and 31.4 as the final authority with regard to disputes in a broad sense. 31.2—Disputes: The referees shall have general supervision of the game and shall have full control of all game officials and players during the game, including stoppages; and in case of any dispute, their decision shall be final. 31.4—General Duties: It shall be the duty of the referees to impose such penalties as are prescribed by the rules for infractions thereof and they shall give the final decision in matter of disputed goals. The referees may consult with the linesmen, goal judge or video goal judge before making their decision. I am hopeful that a consultation by the officiating crew would have determined an error in rule interpretation on the play and an announcement made that, "It was determined by the officials that an off-side had occurred at the blue line and the goal has been disallowed." I doubt if there will be confusion in the future on what constitutes legally carrying or back passing the puck by a defending player into his end zone. Perhaps it wouldnt hurt to add this and similar situations to the growing list of allowable officials conferences at the penalty box to determine the legal scoring of a goal. Barry Trotz and the Nashville Preds would be in full agreement. ' ' '

TORONTO, Ontario -- Will Acton came through again for the Toronto Marlies. Acton scored the winning goal early in the third period as the Marlies beat the Grand Rapids Griffins 4-2 on Saturday to even the AHL semifinal series at a game apiece. He only has two goals in the playoff, but both have been game-winners. In Round 1, he clinched the series against Rochester, scoring in overtime of Game 3 to sweep the Americans. On Saturday, he took a saucer pass from Jerry DAmigo in the slot area and snapped the puck past Petr Mrazek at 2:36 to put the Marlies ahead for good. "Willy scored a huge goal in Rochester and he did it again tonight -- another game-winner," said Greg Scott, who continued his torrid post-season play, scoring a goal and adding an empty-netter. "Hes got a shot on him and when he uses it, its a weapon." With captain Ryan Hamilton and scorer Joe Colborne up with the Maple Leafs, Marlies coach Dallas Eakins has entrusted Acton, whos on an AHL contract with Toronto, with top-six minutes so far in the post-season. "Tonight, I didnt love his first period," Eakins said. "I had to bark at him a bit on the bench. But the great thing about Willy is that you can give him a bit of a boot and he responds. Hes a diligent kid, such a hard worker and a big part of the character of our group. "Its great to see him respond like that. It was a huge goal." The series now shifts to Grand Rapids for the next three games. The Griffins took Game 1, crushing the Marlies 7-0, the worst playoff loss in Torontos franchise history. "Game 1 was a little rough," Scott said. "Our first period, I dont think we played that well, but in the second and third we got going. "The second half, we just bought into what we were doing. We were playing Toronto Marlies hockey." Ryan Lasch had the other goal for Toronto and Drew MacIntyre made 30 saves for the win. Tomas Jurco and Landon Ferraro replied for Grand Rapids. Mrazek stopped 28 shots in defeat. After a scoreless first period, the teams opened up with two goals apiece in the second. The Griffins got on the board first at 8:36 on a 2-on-1 rush. Jurco dished to Teemu Pulkkinen who poked the puck toward the Toronto goal. MacIntyre couldnt coral it and Jurco swooped in from the right side of the net to flick the puck over the sprawling goalie. The Marlies finally broke through less than two minutes later, scoring their first goal of the series. It came on the power play, when Lasch scored on his second chance at a rebound off a Paul Ranger point shot. The 5-9, 175-pound Lasch was playing his first game of the playoffs after sitting out the first four games. "Grand Rapids wants to play a skilled game," Eakins said. "Thats what Ryan Lasch can do and thats why we inserted him. We thought he could have a real profound effect against a team like this that plays a style like his." Toronto then took its first lead of the series at 15:03 when Scott scored his second short-handed goal of the playoffs. "Ziggy pinched up on their guy cutting across and knocked the puck free," Scott said. "I thought I was in alone, but they had a guy on me. I made a little move, buried my head and shot it." But Grand Rapids got its own short-handed goal 1:41 later when Ferraro scored on a breakaway after Ranger fumbled the puck at the Griffins blue-line with no one behind him to back him up. Grand Rapids owned most of the play in the first two periods, getting the first seven shots in each frame before the Marlies were able to record a shot on goal and outshooting Toronto 28-15. "We were firmly out of sorts in the first period, but Drew held us in," Eakins said. "In the third, I went with the guys who got us here and shortened the bench right up, drastically and our guys responded." "When you get saves from your goaltender, especially timely ones and big ones, it gives your team confidence, and it excites the bench," Eakins said. "The problem was we had to wait 25 to 35 minutes before we could really get going, so we dont want to go down that road too much." After Acton scored the winner early in the third period, Scott got his second of the game, an empty-netter at 18:41, his league-leading seventh of the post-season. Notes: Its the second-ever playoff meeting between the two teams. NEW YORK -- Brian Schottenheimer is off the hot seat and out the door. The embattled New York Jets offensive co-ordinator told the team Tuesday that he will not return next season after six years running an offence that often failed to live up to expectations. In a statement released by the team Tuesday night, Schottenheimer said he made the decision "after much thought and consideration." Schottenheimer, the son of former NFL coach Marty Schottenheimer, was highly criticized for the Jets inconsistencies on an offensive unit that ranked 25th overall and for quarterback Mark Sanchez not progressing in his third year. The 38-year-old Schottenheimer said in the statement that he was "very proud of what we have accomplished" during his time with the Jets, and thanked coach Rex Ryan and the organization. "I look forward to the exciting opportunities that lie ahead," he said. Former Miami Dolphins coach Tony Sparano is expected to be at the top of the Jets wish list to replace Schottenheimer. Sparano, fired in December and replaced by Todd Bowles, has also worked as an assistant with Cleveland, Washington, Jacksonville and Dallas. Its one of a handful of coaching moves that will shake up Ryans staff. Offensive line coach Bill Callahan and wide receivers coach Henry Ellard are both not expected back. Ryan and general manager Mike Tannenbaum said last week after the team finished 8-8 and failed to make the playoffs that they expected Schottenheimer back unless he got a head coaching job. Schottenheimer interviewed for Jacksonvilles job, which went to Mike Mularkey. Schottenheimer had two years and about US$3.2 million remaining on his contract after quietly receiving an extension in the off-season. Apparently, the sides agreed to a mutual parting after a tough season. "Brian and I talked and I understand his decision to look for a fresh start," Ryan said in a statement. "Id like to thank him for all of his contributions these past three seasons. Hes been right there with me, shoulder to shoulder, and played a key role in our success, helping us to reach two AFC championship games." Ryan added he feels "fortunate to have worked with him" and he knows Schottenheimer "will be a successful head coach one day -- probably sooner than later." Schottenheimers future had been uncertain for several weeks, despite the votes of confidence from both Ryan and Tannenbaum. Sanchez struggled mightily down the stretch as the Jets lost three straight to end the season, and was wildly inconsistent throughout as Schottenheimers offence failed to establish an identity. After going with a run-first approach, which is Ryans preference, the Jets decided to start this season by passing more with wide receivers Santonio Holmes, Plaxico Burress and the since-departed Derrick Mason in the mix. But the offensive line started poorly, unable to consistently protect Sanchez or open up holes for the running game -- creating a domino effect that led to the quarterback getting bruised and battered routinely. After a few games, Ryan then insisted the Jets go back to a "ground-and-pound" approach, which was slow to develop with Shonn Greene. There were signs of trouble early when Mason made some critical comments, saying the team had "cracks" that needed to be fixed. Mason, along with Burress and Holmes, was also mentioned in a Daily News report in October that said the wide receivers had met with Ryan individually to complain about Schottenheimers system. All three denied the report, as did Ryan, but Mason was soon traded to Houston. The Jets even brought in Tom Moore, the former Indianapolis Colts offensive guru, as a consultant to assist Schottenheimer -- and some viewed that as a clear indicator that the team was not thrilled with the offensive co-ordinator. Schottenheimer publicly said he was happy to have someone with Moores experience to lean on, and Ryan repeatedly said Moores presence was in no way a result of a lack of confidence in Schottenheimer. But things seemed to come to a head in Week 16 as the offence couldnt get much of anything done down the stretch in a 29-14 loss to the Giants that seriously jeopardized their playoff hopes. Sanchez threw 59 times in the game, something that had even the players scratching their heads. In the season finale at Miami, Holmes sulked about his role and argued in the huddle, leading to Schottenheimers last major decision with the Jets. He benched the playmaker while New York was trying to get back into a 19-17 loss. Schottenheimer was often the target of irate fans, who flocked to sports radio shows, Twitter and message boards, demanding that he be fired. Predictably, many fans also celebrated the news on Twitter late Tuesday night after the move was announced. Schottenheimer came to New York in 2006 as part of former coach Eric Manginis staff, and was praised in that first season for a refreshingly creative approach. That seemed to diminish over the next few seasons, though, but Schottenheimer also dealt with a revolving door at quarterback with Chad Pennington, Kellen Clemens and then Brett Favre. After Ryan replaced Mangini as coach in 2009, he kept Schottenheimer as his offensive co-ordinator. Ryan and Schottenheimer often talked about how they shared a common bond as sons of former NFL coaches, and were able to deal with criticism from fans and media maybe a bit better than those who hadnt grown up as they had. "I grew up in a household around a coach that took a lot of heat and got fired at 14-2," Schottenheimer said a few weeks ago, referring to his father Martys firing by San Diego following the 2006 season. "You have no control over it, so you just roll with the punches."

Minneapolis, MN (Sports Network) - Danny Valencias single scored the winning run in the bottom of the 10th frame, as Minnesota edged Kansas City, 4-3, in the first test of a two-game set at Target Field. You have to battle in that situation, said Valencia. I probably went up there a little too jumpy. Id like to see a couple pitches. I got in a quick hole, but was able to get a fast ball up in the zone and get a hit. Valencias game-winning single into right-center field followed Jason Kubels towering drive with two runners on that took Jeff Francoeur to the right- center field wall. The ball went into Francoeurs glove but fell out as he turned his body, resulting in a long single to load the bases. Robinson Tejeda (0-1) surrendered the loss, while Dusty Hughes (1-0) pitched a scoreless 10th for the win. Michael Cuddyer, who came into the game with three hits on the season, finished 4-of-4, Kubel had a pair of hits and scored a run, while Luke Hughes finished 2-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in for the Twins, who snapped a two-game losing streak. Wilson Betemit went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Mike Aviles drove in a run for Kansas City, which saw its two-game winning streak come to an end. Both starters pitched well despite not factoring in the decision. Brian Duensing gave up three runs -- two earned -- on eight hits with a pair of strikeouts and two walks over six frames, while Jeff Francis continued his rejuvenation with the Royals, yielding three runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and one walk over seven frames. Bottom line, we want to come out and win the game. We were right in it until the end, and certainly little things you can look at, but we have to come back tomorrow, said Francis. Minnesota scored the games first run in the third, as Alexi Casilla swiped secoond and scored on Joe Mauers sacrifice fly.dddddddddddd The Royals took the edge in the fourth as Billy Butler walked, took third on Francoeurs double and cruised home on Betemits infield hit. Aviles sacrifice fly put the visitors in front. Francis left a few balls up in the zone and paid the price in Minnesotas fourth-inning at-bat. Cuddyer lined a single to left, Kubel crushed a double past Francoeur in right then Valencia walked to load the bases with one out. Hughes did just enough with a fastball on outside half, punching it just over the second baseman for a two-run single and a 3-2 lead. Neither team mounted much of a charge until the top of the seventh when several defensive lapses put the Royals in position to take the lead. Alcides Escobar beat out a roller to third that Valencia couldnt cleanly transition in time to throw him out. Chris Getz followed with a bunt that Duensing fielded and threw wildly down the first-base line, allowing each player to move up a base. Melky Cabrera slapped a single off Duensing toward the shortstop, as Escobar scored to tie the game with runners on the corners and nobody out. Jose Mijares replaced Duensing and struck out Alex Gordon then Matt Capps entered and induced a Butler pop out for the second out. The hard-throwing hurler then reared back and blew one past Francoeur for the third out. Minnesota put together a solid scoring opportunity in the ninth as Valencia worked a leadoff walk and moved up a base on Jim Thomes one-out single. However, Denard Span and Mauer flied out to send the game to extra innings. GAME NOTES:Betemit is batting .400 on the young season...Francis sports a 2.61 earned run average over his first three starts...Minnesota won 13 of the 18 meetings between the two teams last season. Brandon Banks has a tough act to follow. His own. The five-foot-seven, 153-pound receiver/kick-returner is the reason why Hamilton will host Montreal in the East Division semifinal Sunday in Guelph, Ont. On Oct. 26, Banks returned a missed field goal 107 yards for the decisive TD in a thrilling 27-24 home win over the Alouettes. The victory earned Hamilton (10-8) second in the East and home-field advantage in a playoff rematch with Montreal (8-10). Banks, who joined the Ticats on Sept. 30, also had a 45-yard TD run earlier in the contest. Suffice to say, Banks isnt heading into the CFL playoffs under the radar. "Thats cool, thats part of football," he said. "They still have to go out there and execute and stop me or whoever is getting the ball. "I dream about (making big returns with game on the line) every week and hopefully I can make a difference. Im going to try. I want the ball in my hands and be able to go the distance at any moment." Banks has been a versatile performer for Hamilton. Offensively, he has nine catches for 95 yards and six carries for 60 yards and a TD. He has also returned punts (17 for 107 yards) and kickoffs (14 kickoffs for 319 yards). Given his diminutive stature, its no surprise Banks forte is speed. In 2006, USA Today named the native of Garner, N.C., to its all-USA high school track team after he posted a 100-metre time of 10.42 seconds. And at Kansas State, Banks returned five kickoffs for TDs. Invariably the conversation always seems to revert back to Banks compact stature, but the 25-year-old is very comfortable in his own skin. "Its kind of normal now," he said. "Ive been going through it since I was little, its a normal question for me." Little? "Actually, when I was younger, I should say," Banks said before bursting out in laughter. Banks joined the Washington Redskins in 2010 as an undrafted free agent. He appeared in 41 games over three seasons, registering 119 kickoff returns for 2,856 yards and TD, 100 punt returns for 937 yards and 11 career receptions. But ball security was an issue as Banks had 12 career special-teams fumbles and another as a receiver. Banks was inactive for Washingtons final four regular-season games last year and became an unrestricted free agent in March when the Redskins didnt tender him an offer as a restricted free agent. Banks certainly filled a need for Hamilton, which had been in the market for an explosive returner after rookie Lindsey Lamar suffered a concussion earlier this season. Former Ticats star Chris Williams was the CFLs top special-teams player last year but became embroiled in a contract impasse with the club and never reported, eventually being allowed to join the NFLs New Orleans Saints. "I like the situation Im in right now," Banks said. "I think its everybodys dream to be in the NFL but if this is the best place for me to be, Id love to stay." Banks skillset is tailor-made for the longer, wider Canadian field. Special-teams play is crucial in three-down football because not only can it result in game-winning returns but result in teams getting very good field position to start drives. "Being elusive, fast and quick . . . I definitely try to use those to my advantage," Banks said. "Speed kills in the game of football. "Special-teams here are very important because theyre a third of the game and you can average 20-some plays on special teams per game. Im trying to use the wider field and not being able to call for a fair catch to my advantage. I base my skills on doing a lot of eluding and trying to run by guys." Banks return TD gave Hamilton the season series with Montreal for the first time since 02. The Ticats have reached the East Division final once since then, that coming in 11 when they lost 19-3 in Winnipeg. The Ticats last won the Grey Cup in 99, beating Calgary 32-21 at B.C. Place under late coach Ron Lancaster. But Banks focus now remains squarely on a Montreal team Hamilton will face for the third time since Sept 21. "Of course, you want to take care of home and dont want to lose at home but I think theres pressure on both teams," Banks said. "Win or go home, right? "It will come down to execution. I think the team that has the fewest penalties in the game will win."

NFL cheap jerseys . He can change that Sunday. So could Dario Franchitti. Its been 22 years since Rick Mears became the third driver with four Indy 500 victories. NEW YORK -- One playoff victory was good enough for Mike Woodson to return as New York Knicks coach -- even with Phil Jackson lurking as a potential candidate. Woodson knows more will be asked of him now. "I know expectations are high and they should be high," Woodson said during a conference call, "and Im looking forward to the challenge." The Knicks removed the interim tag Friday and announced they had given Woodson a multiyear contract extension, rewarding him for a terrific finish to what had been a turbulent season. Woodson led the Knicks to an 18-6 record after replacing Mike DAntoni on March 14. The Knicks lost 4-1 to Miami in the first round, snapping an NBA-record, 13-game post-season losing streak by winning Game 4 for their first victory since 2001. Still, there was speculation that Madison Square Garden chairman James Dolan would open one of the leagues biggest check books to go after Jackson, the 11-time champion coach and former Knicks player who sat out last season after retiring from the Los Angeles Lakers. Yet the Knicks never looked anywhere beyond Woodson, believing they can continue to improve with a full season of his coaching. "I think Woody earned the right to be the first person we talked to and turned out to be the only person we talked to because our discussions with him after the season really reflected why he was so successful during the season," general manager Glen Grunwald said. "We thought he was the right guy for this team at this time. Obviously, theres some great coaches out there that had we opened up the search would have been called, mainly Phil Jackson, whos the most successful coach in the NBA history, but we felt Woody was our guy and he showed it during the season and our discussions after the season." Woodson shrugged off the Jackson speculation. "Tremendous coach, I know his names been mentioned a lot, but that was not my concern," Woodson said. "My concern at the time was coaching the New York Knicks the period that I had to coach and Mr. Dolan decided to bring me back." Neither the Knicks nor Woodson would disclose the terms of the deal. A firsst-round draft pick of the Knicks in 1980, Woodson returned to the team last summer as an assistant coach, providing a defensive-minded voice to DAntonis staff.dddddddddddd Woodsons influence, combined with Defensive Player of the Year Tyson Chandler, moved the Knicks into the top half of the leagues defensive rankings after they had been one the worst teams for years. DAntoni resigned March 14 when the Knicks were 18-24 and in danger of missing the playoffs. Woodson won his first five games and was praised by players for holding them more accountable to playing defence. Most importantly, he got the most out of Carmelo Anthony, who was having a disappointing season in DAntonis offence but was Aprils Eastern Conference player of the month. "Mike took over the team under challenging circumstances and made it clear, starting on day one, that he was going to hold every player on our roster accountable," Dolan said in a statement. "We saw a significant improvement since Mike took over and believe our team will only keep improving under Mikes direction." Woodson denied recent reports that he had replaced agent Joe Glass under pressure from Dolan to avoid having to work again with former coach Larry Browns representation. Woodson confirmed he switched to CAA, but said it was his choice, and that agent Terry Prince had worked on his contract. Anthony, Chandler and fellow star Amare Stoudemire had all backed Woodsons return when the season ended. And his chances of improving returned when the Knicks removed the interim tag from Grunwald, his former college teammate at Indiana, late in the regular season. Woodson previously spent six seasons as coach of the Atlanta Hawks, improving his win total in every season until they went 53-29 in 2009-10. But he wasnt retained after they were swept in the conference semifinals for the second straight year. He then sat out a year before interviewing last summer for openings in Detroit -- where he was an assistant on the Pistons NBA championship team in 2004 -- Minnesota and Houston. He then was hired by the Knicks on Aug. 29. Woodson has a career 224-292 record as an NBA coach. ' ' '
