TORONTO -- The Toronto Maple Leafs stood pat Wednesday, deciding that the cost to make a move on trade deadline day was too much. "We would have been hurting ourselves long-term and we werent prepared to do that," Dave Nonis, Torontos senior vice-president and general manager, told reporters. Nonis, who said he made plenty of calls to test the waters, said the asking prices were high and the talent on offer limited. The sense he got was there might be more movement come the summer. "There wasnt a lot available in general," he said. "I think deals that changed the look of your team seemed to happen at the draft." Nonis acknowledged that his team had been up and down, putting the onus on the Leafs to return to their winning ways before the Olympic break. "If we do, we should be fine. And if we dont, then were going to have some difficulties," he said. "But its not a bad team. I think weve got a good core group. Were very young still." Nonis said he did get trade inquiries, pointing to younger players like rookie defenceman Morgan Rielly -- who turns 20 on Sunday. "Morgan Riellys easy to move today. But it doesnt makes sense to us." He said the team could have got some "pretty good high picks" for some of its players facing unrestricted free agency this summer. The Norris Trophy-nominee received a record $7.5-million contract after being taken to arbitration by the club and while that number may set the Predators back when it comes time to re-sign other key pieces, a year without Weber would have been catastrophic for the team. The team now goes about building on its franchise-best second round exit in 2011 and making the jump from perennial playoff qualifiers to serious playoff contenders. Breakout Player to Watch: With the trade of Cody Franson to Toronto, some prime power-play minutes just opened up on the Predators blue line. The guy who looks to be the prime beneficiary of those minutes is Jonathon Blum. The 2007 first-rounder notched eight points in 23 games with Nashville last season after being recalled from Milwaukee in February. Though Weber and Ryan Suter will continue to eat up the big-time minutes and power play time, the Predators obviously believe in Blum, who averaged more ice-time per game than Franson last season and could fill in the 29 points he took with him once given a full season with the team. Marquee Match-Up: Feb. 9 at Ottawa - Capital Concern. Mike Fisher makes his first-ever journey to Ottawa as a member of the opposition. With the Senators in a full-on rebuilding stage and Fisher settled in Nashville, how will the fans greet their former hero? Other Dates to Watch: Oct. 20 at Vancouver - The Predators make their first trip to Rogers Arena since the Canucks bounced them from the playoffs in the second round. Reason to Get Excited: The cavalry is coming. Nashville let a lot of their veteran players walk in the off-season, which may seem like a bad thing for a team trying to make a push to the next level. But the good news is that those departures should mean a promotion for a lot of prospects and young NHLers from within the organization. Blum should be able to fill in for Franson, but beyond that, theyve already seen what players like Colin Wilson, Blake Geoffrion and Cal OReilly can do at the NHL level. The departures of players like Sullivan, Dumont, Ward and Goc opens up minutes for the young crop. That, in turn, frees up cash to potentially lock up key elements like Weber, Ryan Suter and Pekka Rinne for the long-term. Home Hardware: Few NHL coaches have consistently done more with less than Barry Trotz. Thats not to undercut the talent level of the current Predators squad, but Trotz has shepherded the team from expansion to the playoffs to contenders over the past decade largely without the benefit of a star-studded line-up. Perhaps winning a division title might get him a sniff at the Jack Adams Award. However, thats easier said than done when youre fighting off the Red Wings on a yearly basis. Still, if he hasnt done enough to win one already, who knows what it will take? On The Hot Seat: General manager David Poile has done well to assemble a competitive team through the draft. Stage 2 of the Predators plan is keeping those pieces together. He played his hand with Weber the best he could by taking him to arbitration and got scorched to the tune of $3 million more than he was offering (and $1 million less than what Weber wanted). Now hes faced with the task of re-signing Weber, Suter and Rinne before July 1 next year. The team has a wealth of cap space, but the Predators just arent a spend-to-the-cap organization. Further complicating matters is that while Weber still has one more year of restricted free agency after his current deal expires, Suter and Rinne are headed to unrestricted free agency. If Poile cant get most of the leg-work done on those three deals over the course of the regular season it may force either a painful rebuild, uncomfortably high off-season contract numbers or a single-season, go-for-broke playoff push. Its Your! Call: Nashville certainly served notice last season that they are a force to be reckoned with after they sent Anaheim packing in the playoffs and pushed Vancouver to six games before bowing out. So have they spoiled the element of surprise that may have forced other teams to underestimate them? Nashville now has a Norris nominee and a Vezina nominee, but no top-tier scoring threat up front. If teams clamp down on the Predators and try to beat them at their own game, will they be able to post a record good enough to stay afloat in the high-powered Western Conference? Martin Erat and Sergei Kostitsyns 50-point output was third worst amongst team-leaders in the NHL last season ahead of only Edmonton and Florida. The team then jettisoned 49 goals from last seasons squad through trades and unsigned free agents while acquiring only 17 goals in replacement players. The team has a lot of young talent, but leaning on players yet to play a full NHL season is a risky strategy for a traditionally low-scoring team. If the team is unable to be amongst the NHLs stingiest defences, will they be able to overcome their lack of fire-power?

Who might be available and who might be on the move in Edmonton? Darren Dreger: Sam Gagner, we know. Ales Hemsky, we know. Ryan Smyth is expected. Theres no dialog between Craig MacTavish and Ryan Smyth. The belief is that Smyth wants one more crack with a winning team to see if he can win the Stanley Cup. Hes still effective, at least in the offensive zone, so I expect his name will heat up as we get closer to the deadline. Could Matt Moulson be heading to Ottawa? Pierre LeBrun: Matt Moulson will be a very popular name as the March deadline approaches. We know hes one of the guys the LA Kings are looking at, but the Ottawa Senators are another team. A little bit of a connection with the Senators, as GM Bryan Murrays nephew Tim Murray is now GM in Buffalo. Moulsons a guy that if the Senators can stay in the playoff mix over the next few weeks, I believe they will make inquiries on him. Might Thomas Vanek, who was part of the Moulson trade, re-sign on Long Island? LeBrun: He has liked it on Long Island a lot more than he thought he would. The threat of terrorism always is going to be concerning for a world spectacle such as this and thats not lost on neither the Players Association and National Hockey League. Both will tell you that their guest list, be it family or friends, is reducing on a week-by-week basis leading up to the Olympic Games but the NHL is confident that their safety will be insured by the Russian government and the International Olympic Organization. But if there were significant terrorist attempts or attacks prior to the Olympics in Sochi, I think that the NHL and the NHLPA also wouldnt hesitate to remove themselves from the Games. Is the NHL ready to expand video review and when? LeBrun: I think more than ever. Its all about timing and I can tell you right now that its on the GMs agenda in March when they will again tackle this. But this time, I think the league might finally get its way. We know that hockey operations has wanted to expand video review for a long time and if they get their way this year, not only will they get it moving forward but maybe even for the playoffs if they can get the owners and the NHLPA to sign off. Lots of "ifs" but certainly theres a different movement here. Bob McKenzie: I believe that Detroit goal on Saturday night was the tipping point for general managers. GMs in the past have overwhelmingly been against expanding video review but after Saturday night, I surveyed 23 NHL GMs and 22 of them said we cannot have a repeat of what happened on Saturday night. The one GM who didnt say that said they have to discuss what theyre going to do. Now, how exactly they go about that is the controversial aspect. Some guys want the coachs challenge, some guys want it only to be on the very specific play where a puck comes off the mesh, and some guys want the referees to be able to review it at the penalty bench. Its all over the map and how they process this is the controversial aspect to it. But after that goal that was scored on Saturday night, many general managers said could you imagine if the Stanley Cup was decided on a goal like that. Does anything come of Sens owner Eugene Melnyk presenting the NHL Matt Cooke investigation evidence? McKenzie: No, it doesnt. When this incident happened last season, Melnyk said that he believed in his heart that Cooke had malice and intentionally severed the tendon of Erik Karlsson. He said afterwards he was going to prove it and talked about a forensic investigation. He spent a lot of time, effort and money and put together a fully detailed medical report and presented that to the NHL in New York City on Monday. "I think he just had the guys believing that we were capable of doing it," said Francis, whos now vice president of hockey operations for the Hurricanes. "We kept everything sort of simple and the focus on the direction it needed to be kept on, and as a result you had a team that believes in itself, believes in each other and some may say overachieved, but not according to the guys in that locker room or the coaching staff. We certainly believed we belonged right to the end." Maurice isnt the same man he was when he got his first NHL head-coaching job at the age of 28 or even the same from 2002. Maurice has coached 1,084 games with the Whalers, Hurricanes and Toronto Maple Leafs and isnt a fresh-faced youngster anymore. "Obviously he knows what works and wwhat doesnt work now," ONeill said.dddddddddddd "I think maybe when he was younger he thought he had to be a hard ass all the time for guys to kind of buy in and believe it, and then later on the message didnt have to be that because he was established, he had coached so many games." Maurice is 46 now, armed with experience from coaching Metallurg in Russias Kontinental Hockey League and doing some television analysis. Francis worked on Maurices staff in 2009-10 and 2010-11 and saw how he matured and changed over time. Francis has no doubt Maurice has adjusted with a changing league. "Hes very bright, hes a good student of the game and hes watching whats happening and how things are evolving," Francis said. "He incorporates that into his game plan and his systems. Theres no question he doesnt get stuck on one particular thing but more or less moves with the times." Times now are about youth, as Weekes pointed out the NHL has never been younger. Maurice will be charged with figuring out how to best use defenceman Jacob Trouba, centre Mark Scheifele and others in the pipeline in Winnipeg. Based on what Maurice did at the junior level, including winning the 1995 OHL title with the Detroit Jr. Red Wings, and how much he accomplished with the Hurricanes, his former players know where his strengths lie. Most notably, he can maximize the talent at his disposal. "Its one thing to coach somebody up, its another thing to just coach and its another thing to coach somebody down," Weekes said. "Paul Maurice is somebody that Ive seen, and one of the few that Ive seen as a head coach in my time, that coached you up." If the Jets hope to make up a substantial deficit to get back into contention this season or at least make strides for the future, itll be up to Maurice to coach up like he did in Carolina. That job starts with creating an identity for a team that has been lacking one. Those Hurricanes teams are a nice blue print. "I think its a team that works extremely hard," Francis said. "I think its a team that tries to be very solid in its own end and then try to get in on the forecheck as quickly and as aggressively as possible. Those are some of the trademarks that he really liked to incorporate into his team." Personal relationships also are a trademark of Maurices coaching. Weekes said Maurice knew how to treat players as players and as people, and Francis lauded his "open-door policy," which could benefit Ladd. "At any point as a captain, if I wanted to walk in and have a conversation with him, I felt comfortable doing that," Francis said. "We could talk about everything from my individual game to team concepts and systems or strengths and weaknesses and how to adjust things. And it was no different being a part of the coaching staff. He gave everybody a voice. Youre allowed to kind of say your piece and what you thought, and at the end of the day it was his job as head coach to make the final decision. But he certainly gave you that opportunity to express what you felt." Maurice certainly hasnt been perfect. During his 13 full seasons as an NHL head coach, his teams made the playoffs five times and missed eight. But Weekes, who was part of just one Maurice-led playoff team, praised him as "hands-down" the best coach he ever played for. "He set the right tone with the staff, certainly with all of our players, and for the most part youd have to say he put all of us in a position to succeed," Weekes said. "Everything was structured, our work ethic as a team was through the roof, and I think that really reflected our coaches, starting with Coach Maurice, just in terms of the preparation, the practice detail, the tempo -- us doing all the little things that it took the be successful." ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- The Buffalo Bills have secured at least one half of their starting safety tandem after signing Aaron Williams to a four-year, $26 million contract extension Wednesday. A person with knowledge of the contract said Williams is guaranteed $14.625 million. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the terms were not released by the Bills. The extension locks up Williams through 2018, and comes at a time when the Bills risk losing three-time Pro Bowl safety Jairus Byrd, who is preparing to test free agency next week. "Im just blessed that they gave me that opportunity, and they trusted me to be here long-term to get this team back to where it started." Struggling with the pace of his putts, he needed almost all of that cushion Sunday, closing with a 1-under 71 at PGA West to beat Ryan Palmer by two strokes. The 29-year-old from Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a contender to win Sundays super-G, although downhill is more her strength. "Im not as strong in super-G as I am in downhill, but the two races gave me lots of confidence," Hoefl-Riesch said. Vonn won all three races at Lake Louise in 2011 and 2012 and owns a record 14 victories at the venue. The U.S. ski star finished 11th Saturday, but felt she took a step forward from Fridays downhill when she finished 40th. Prior to her arrival, Vonn hadnt raced since crashing and suffering a severe right knee injury at the world championship in February. "I was more aggressive and just more confident and comfortable," the Olympic womens downhill champion said. "My whole body language was different. Under no circumstance can a player participate in the play while transporting a goal stick and would incur an automatic minor penalty for playing with an illegal stick; no measurement required here!
