San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - Tim Lincecum worked seven scoreless innings as San Francisco topped Minnesota, 2-1, in the rubber match of a three-game interleague set. Lincecum (6-6) allowed just three hits and two walks while fanning 12 en route to his first win since May 27. I wasnt worried about what would happen when I throw my pitches, Lincecum admitted. Early in the game, when I was commanding my pitches in the zone, I just opened up my mind to allow myself to become that much more confident. Miguel Tejada and Cody Ross drove in a run each for the Giants, who took the final two games in the series following a five-game losing skid. Michael Cuddyer finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and drove in the lone run for the Twins, who have lost two straight after winning eight in a row. Brian Duensing (4-7) was the hard-luck loser, charged with six hits and one run with five strikeouts and a pair of walks over 6 2/3 frames. This was just a very good pitching matchup, Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. They just pitched a little better. Thats the Duensing we were looking for. He was consistent and has good stuff. Ahead by a slim 1-0 margin, San Francisco wasted a bases-loaded situation in the seventh when Bill Hall flied out, but tacked on an insurance run in the eighth when Aubrey Huff stroked a leadoff double and came in when Ross followed with a base hit. It was needed, as closer Brian Wilson looked shaky to start the ninth, walking Alexi Casilla and serving up an RBI double from Cuddyer. However, the bearded hurler settled down to retire the next two batters and see Cuddyer tagged out in a rundown to earn his 21st save. The Giants gave Lincecum all the support he needed in the second inning, as Pablo Sandoval singled with one out, moved to third on a Pat Burrell double and scored on a Tejada groundout. Hall also short-circuited a bases-loaded situation in the fifth when he grounded into a fielders choice. GAME NOTES:San Francisco has won four of the last six meetings with Minnesota dating back to their last matchup in 2005...Lincecum posted his fourth game of 10-or-more strikeouts this season, and his first since punching out 12 batters on May 4 against the New York Mets...Minnesota batters struck out 14 times in the contest.

"We just wanted to be able to focus," Sanchez said during a conference call Wednesday.Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry Fraser wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca! Hi Kerry, I was hoping you could clarify Henrik Sedins penalty in Tuesday nights Canucks game. Henrik passed his teammate his stick - with his own stick - and ended up getting an unsportsmanlike penalty. I dont understand how that was unsportsmanlike, or how he did anything bad. Thanks,Barjinder Parhar Vancouver, BC ----- Hey Kerry, During the Canucks-Rangers game, Henrik Sedin got a penalty for being "unsportsmanlike." He nudged a fallen stick back to his teammate and got penalized. Ive always wondered why, when a player loses his stick, he doesnt just pick it back up. I keep thinking, "Cmon man, your sticks only ten feet away from you! You need your stick! Pick it up!" Whats up with players losing their sticks and continuing empty-handed? Thanks. Norman Yeung,Toronto Barjinder and Norman: TSN analyst Mike Johnson immediately made the right call from between the glass in Vancouver last night on the TSN broadcast as did referee Ian Walsh from the ice when Henrik made an illegal stick pass to his teammate, Dan Hamhuis in violation of rule 10.3 Broken Stick – Player. "A player who has lost or broken his stick may only receive a stick at his own players bench or be handed one at his players bench or be handed one from a teammate on the ice. A player (Henrik Sedin) will be penalized if he throws, tosses, slides or shoots a stick to a teammate on the ice." Many pplayers (former and current) do not know this rule so helmets off everyone to Mike Johnson for getting it right.dddddddddddd Here are some other variations of the rule that might come into play. Should they occur you will be one step ahead of the correct call on the ice. Lets assume that Henrik knew the rule and picked up his teammates stick and while in the act of skating it to Hamhuis got involved in the play while he had two sticks in his hands (i.e. checked an opponent or played the puck). Henrik would receive a minor penalty as a player is only allowed to participate in the play with one stick. The same rule applies if a player retrieves a goalkeepers stick. He must physically transport it to the goalie and hand it to him or drop it in his crease to avoid a minor penalty. For violation of this rule the player is assessed a minor penalty for "throwing the stick." Under no circumstance can a player participate in the play while transporting a goal stick and would incur an automatic minor penalty for playing with an illegal stick; no measurement required here! (A goalkeeper is the only player on the ice that can play with a broken stick without incurring a minor penalty). Finally, if a player is tendered a stick thrown on the ice from the players or penalty bench he will not receive a penalty. The person responsible for throwing the stick would receive a bench minor penalty. I trust this clears up any confusion on the call that Mike Johnson and Ian Walsh made last night on Henrik. ' ' '

The Vancouver Canucks will be without David Booth for 4-6 weeks after the forward was found to have an MCL injury in his right knee. Booth suffered the injury in Tuesdays win over the Colorado Avalanche, when he was hit knee-on-knee by Kevin Porter. Porter received a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct on the play, and will have a hearing with NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan on Thursday. Booth had to be assisted to the locker room and did not return. The Canucks announced the injury to Booth on Wednesday night, as the team prepared to embark on a five-game east coast trip that starts Thursday in Montreal. Booth was acquired by the Canucks in a four-player swap with the Florida Panthers in October. He has five goals and 12 points in 19 games since being dealt to Vancouver.

A win would cement Canada top spot in its group and a berth in the quarter-final round while a loss would leave the team depending on results of other games. Canada would like to have the luxury of controlling its own fate. "We need to win the game. Its really as simple as that," Canadian coach Stephen Hart said Monday. Panama sits atop Group C after beating both the United States and Guadeloupe and its success has been a surprise to everybody, it seems, except Hart. "I said before the Gold Cup and people probably laughed at me but Ive seen them play maybe 10 games," Hart said. "Theyre a very good team, they have a very good forward line, the midfield is very dynamic and everybody saw it so they are a top team." The Canadians are tied for second with the U.S. with three points, while Guadeloupe is last with none. Canada opened the tournament with a 2-0 loss to the Americans last week in Detroit before bouncing back to beat Guadeloupe 1-0 on Sunday in Tampa. The top two teams in each group move on, along with the best two third-place teams. If the Canadians lose to Panama, theyll have to wait for the results of other games to know if theyll go through. "Weve still got to stick to our game.," said Canadian captain Kevin McKenna. "Weve had our gameplan and working on our tactics for a couple years now and were hoping that its going to pay off in the game. "Theyre a counter-attacking team. Hopefully if we get at them and put them under pressure hopefully theyll make a few mistakes in their buiildup and we can catch them at their own game.dddddddddddd We know that theyre talented but obviously building up towards World Cup qualifying we need to show our strengths." The U.S. concludes Group C play against Guadeloupe following the Canada-Panama game at Livestrong Sporting Park, the new home of Major League Soccers Sporting Kansas City. The Canadians would get a more favourable quarter-final opponent -- likely either Jamaica or Honduras -- if they finish in top spot in their group. If they finish second, they would play the group B winner. Both of those quarter-finals would go Sunday in Washington, D.C. If Canada qualified as one of the best third-place teams, it would play Mexico on Saturday in East Rutherford, N.J. "You have to win and thats how we approach every game," said Hart. "We did not win against the U.S., we approached the Guadeloupe game as one we have to win and now we have to win." On the injury front, defender Marcel de Jong has returned to his club team in Germany after re-aggravating a persistent shoulder injury. Hes had a history of dislocating his shoulder and that happened in his sleep the night before the Guadeloupe game. Midfielder Atiba Hutchinson is also dealing with a nagging injury. He missed Mondays training session, remaining at the hotel to work with the teams medical staff. Hart said hell decide Hutchinsons status after speaking with the staff. Livestrong Sporting Park is Sporting Kansas Citys new stadium. Should there be a goal in the Canada-Panama game, it would be the first scored in competitive action at the stadium as the first game there between Kansas City and Chicago last week ended in a 0-0 tie. Watching Drew Brees on Monday Night Football is a unique level of entertainment. His command of all sensory overloads around him, his ability to throw with velocity and accuracy consistently, and his internal competitive desire makes him one of the best. I say one of because its so easy to make arguments for Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers or even others. The best is always open to interpretation. Even if youre trying to qualify who is the best as a field goal kicker, there are relatable and applicable questions: what distances, how many pressure kicks, what situations of weather and environment? Trying to calculate who is "the best" at a specific position takes research, which takes time and effort, before you can conclude. But as one of the best, may I suggest his "best" skill is an ability to absorb information and communicate. There was a fantastic segment where Sean Payton, Drew Brees and the Saints offensive coordinator where going over the final sets of plays preferred and avoided the night before their game with the Giants. Now yes, this was in all likelihood staged and was not the actual meeting as more people would be involved, like the backup quarterbacks. Still, it reminded me of the complexity and language of pro football and how having the ability to express and absorb in a rapid clear format makes a difference, not only in pro football but in life. Listening intently to the communication going back and forth, I am 100 percent confident those were real plays. I could tell from the rhythm of the language and the way it was segmented from formation to protection to actual play to possible adjustment. After time and repetition, it becomes relatively easy for the players to understand because you learn what to concentrate on and absorb, and what to delete and avoid because it is not a priority to you in your position. But as quarterback and coach, you have to know it all. And know it all the time. As time has moved on, I have learned that often its not what you say but how you say it. That knowledge is of extreme importance but if you cant express it, articulate it or teach it, than its benefit is limited. One thing that TV has taught me is to develop the ability to put sentences together under pressure, which an NFL quarterback has to do countless times under many awkward circumstances. Its why you see Dan Marino and Boomer Esiason on CBS, Ron Jaworski on ESPN and Terry Bradshaw on FOX. Truth be known, the single most impressive broadcaster that can assimilate information and express it in a concise, logical and understandable form is Jesse Palmer of ESPN/TSN. He has to follow 119 Division I collage football teams compared t0 32 NFL teams. Many people who follow football say what is so tough is that the average football play lasts about five seconds; thats it. Not true. A football play lasts anywhere from 20-30 seconds all the time and every play begins when the quarterback like Drew Brees begins his communication. And as the other 10 players lean into the huddle, the play begins. It continues with the walk to the line of scrimmage. A third phase is when all are in the stance, often receiving new verbal information from the quarterback or others. The final phase happens when the actual play physically begins and ends. And that sequence can happen 60 or 70 times on offence over the course of a three-hour game. I was amazed to listen to Brees and the head coach go back and forth in a foreign language that I recognized as English but still could not understand. A truth I have realized and believe is that everything is mental first, physical second; a vision or a thought first and action or physical result second. This is very true in football when you break down the communication process from the beginning to the end of the football play. I dont know who the best quarterback is the NFL. I have my favorites and my opinions. I do know this, though. If you can absorb and communicate in a short burst of time, you can play. Drew Brees may break Dan Marinos single season passing yards record of 5,084; a great physical accomplishment which, with each pass, began with one underrated aspect of every occupation - the ability to express and communicate.

Now all they have to do is figure out a way to win in Boston and the silverware will return to Canada for the first time since 1993. The problem is, the Canucks have been terrible away from home thus far in the Stanley Cup Final. So, which Canucks team will emerge once the puck drops at TD Garden in Boston tonight for Game 6? The Canucks have been dynamite at home, playing tight, defensive hockey and winning all three games by one-goal margins. The problem, however, is that the Bruins have had their way with them on home ice, outscoring the Canucks 12-1 in Games 3 and 4. So, with the home team unbeaten thus far in the final, will the Canucks be able to put up a fight in Beantown? The Canucks are hoping theyll be able to rebound and exorcise the demons of Games 3 and 4. Theyll try to look back to the killer instinct that allowed them to bury San Jose and Nashville with games to spare and do their best to get the job done in six. Otherwise, they will allow Boston back into this series for a one-game plaayoff on Wednesday in Vancouver.dddddddddddd Consider this: the Canucks are 3-4 in potential series-winning games so far in these playoffs and have been outscored 24-15 in those games. The Canucks are 5-5 on the road so far, including the three road wins they garnered in Nashville. The Bruins, meanwhile, are 2-2 in Games 6 and 7 in the post-season, with an even score line of 10-10 in those four games. They have not won a Game 6 yet in the playoffs, though both were played on the road. The Bruins are 9-3 at home in the playoffs, including dropping their first two games of the playoffs at home to the Canadiens. So, can this Canucks team finally close out a series on its first opportunity? Or, will they be forced to go the distance and hope they can grind out a series victory in Game 7 like they did in Chicago in the first round? Both teams have played a vastly different game at home than they have on the road. But, with the Cup on the line, will Vancouver be able to buck the trend? Or will the Canucks give their fans one last game and hope to hold serve? Its Your Call! ' ' '

TORONTO – Among the many stars, fleeting paparazzi and widespread shimmer of the Hollywood scene was sheer anonymity for the former backup goaltender of the Los Angeles Kings. Jonathan Bernier was but a blip on the glitzy California radar, but now in his first season in Toronto, he finds himself squarely in the spotlight. One half of the Leafs standout goaltending tandem, the 25-year-old has raced out to a quick start with the new opportunity, posting a .933 save percentage in his first 10 games. Born 30 minutes outside of Montreal in nearby Laval, Quebec, Bernier knows a thing or two about the intensity and pressures of a furious hockey market. Speaking to the Leaf Report on Thursday afternoon, he detailed his adjustment to life in the spotlight, life with a new team and goalie coach, and starting on a regular basis. What follows is an edited transcript of that conversation. LR: Im wondering what the difference is off the ice in coming to Toronto. Youre coming from a place in L.A. where its not the same intensity as here. Whats that been like, that process of coming to a hockey market per se? BERNIER: Its definitely an adjustment because in L.A., youd be out on the street and no one knows who you are. Even the greatest players, [Anze] Kopitar and Dustin Brown, theyll maybe get recognized once in a while. [But] here, you have a good game, next day you go out for breakfast or whatever and everyones happy for you. People are very respectful and thats the one thing I found right away is theyll come and say congrats or good game, but theyre very respectful and thats a great thing. LR: Did the first time it happened catch you off guard? BERNIER: I heard about it [before I came here]; guys told me about it. And obviously coming from a big city like Montreal as well, I knew how [their players] deal with the fans outside the rink so I was expecting that a little bit. LR: So just going back to L.A., you could go out to dinner and walk down the street and just nothing? BERNIER: Nothing. Id say after the Cup [in 2012], people kind of knew who we were [in the area] where we lived, but if wed go downtown or Hollywood, theres no chance. LR: So whats the strangest thing that someones said to you here? BERNIER: I havent got any good stories yet (laughs). LR: Do you like the change? BERNIER: Yeah, its a good change. I think it keeps you focused on hockey. You dont want to have a bad game because then the next day, youre going to hear about it (laughs). LR: You understand the market in Montreal, how do you think the two are similar? BERNIER: I think theyre very similar. The [cities are] both supporting the team. I think for me though speaking French and being in Montreal, I think itd be a lot harder just because you have two sessions of media pretty much (laughs). LR: When a player comes to this kind of market, what are the adjustments required just to be ready for that kind of stuff? BERNIER: I found there is pressure, but pressure, you put that on yourself. If you dont really focus on whats going on on TV and radio and internet, I dont find [that it adds pressure]. Maybe [thats] because right now were having success – we have a good record – but maybe if it would be the opposite, maybe Id say a different thing. But so far I havent found that its that hard. Like I said, you just put pressure on yourself so its all about how much pressure you want to put on you. LR: Well, I would imagine it doesnt really change your focus. Your focus would have to be the same regardless. BERNIER: Yeah, exactly. I think even in L.A., among the guys, we were putting that much pressure on ourselves and the GM and coaches. Its kind of the same way here. We try to stay away from the media pressure and just focus on ourselves and our team and just make sure were ready every game. LR: You told me last week about the focus thats required mentally playing more often. Has it helped? Does it help you be a better goalie when you know youre playing more often? BERNIER: You mean from the pressure? LR: No, just in terms of your preparation in being ready to play. I would imagine in some situations in L.A., its difficult when you go a couple weeks and you havent played and youve got to get back in there and play well. Has it been like you thought it would be? BERNIER: I think its easier mentally just because the reason is youre happy and you dont get off into negative thoughts and things like that. So I think if you stay positive and just keep working hard, then youre having fun. I think as a hockey player or any sport, if youre having fun, usually youll have success. I think that was the thing in L.A.; sometimes I was getting frustrated in not playing. But at the same time, here, its fun. We have a great group of guys, were winning right now and its a big snowball. LR: And I can imagine the worst thing is if you had an off-night and you dont get to start for a while its just got to burn you? BERNIER: Yeah. And thats something that I had to learn my first year is not to worry about the result of the game, more focusing on my game. Because then you start worrying if you dont win, then youre not going to play for another two, three weeks and you have to think about that loss. I think I got better [at that] as the years went along. That was something I was really focusing on was just focusing on myself and not the result. LR: Has there been any adjustment working with a different goalie coach? Has he changed things? BERNIER: No. Rick [St. Croix] is really good. Hell just try to give me some tools, but at the same time, its not something that hes going to say you have to do this. Hes just going to let me know hey if you want to do this in a game or in practice, work on that and if you feel comfortable do it. But the one thing I really like is I think he watched a lot of video and probably heard about my style and he adjusted to that. He knows when I feel comfortable with my depth and things like that. Obviously its still new, but were starting to get a good chemistry between him and I. LR: So is that your depth in the net? BERNIER: That was just an example. It can be how I played the puck, make quicker decisions or things like that. But I can tell that he watched video and saw when I was on my game what I was doing right. LR: And thats what James [Reimer] told me, I remember last year, that Ricks not the kind of guy whos going to say you have to do this, hes going to look at what you do and say we can do this. BERNIER: Exactly.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Tight end Tony Moeaki will get whats essentially a four-week tryout in Buffalo to show hes healthy after being signed by the Bills on Wednesday. The former Chiefs player has been out since breaking his shoulder in Kansas Citys preseason win over Pittsburgh on Aug. 23. He was then released by the Chiefs after reaching an injury settlement in October. At 6-foot-3, 252 pounds, Moeaki first gained prominence during his rookie season in 2010, when he had 47 catches for 556 yards and three touchdowns. His career has since been slowed by injuries, including a torn left ACL that forced him to miss the entire 2011 season. Overall, Moeaki has 80 catches for 1,009 yards and four touchdowns in 30 games. He was Kansas Citys third-round draft pick out of Iowa. The Bills (4-8) play at Tampa Bay (3-9) on Sunday. Buffalo made room to sign Moeaki by cutting running back Tashard Choice earlier in the day. Saying its too early to tell when he might play, Moeaki added he was still getting accustomed to his new setting after spending much of the past few months rehabbing in Chicago. "Yes, it all happened pretty quickly. Im just trying to catch my breath here and get started," he said. Moeaki signed after working out with the Bills a day earlier. The move comes with the Bills starting to look ahead to next year to determine their tight end position. Starter Scott Chandler, who ranks second on the Bills with 491 yards receiving, is in the final year of his contract. And hes coming off a tough outing during which his fumble in overtime led to Matt Bryant hitting a 36-yard field goal in Atlantas 34-31 win on Sunday. Moeaki is reunited with Chandler after the two spent two seasons playing together at Iowa. "I know Scott pretty well," Moeaki said. "It helps to have a friend on the team at the same position, especially in this situation, new city, new team." Choice, a sixth-year player, became the odd-man out after spending the past three seasons in Buffalo. He ranked third on the team with 126 yards rushing behind co-starters C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson. Both Jackson and Spiller wore Choices No. 20 jerseys during practice Wednesday in honour of their former teammate. "We just wanted to let him know that we were thinking about him, and we had him with us today in spirit," Jackson said. "It was shocking. He was a tremendous player, so I think hell bounce somewhere and get right back on his feet."

Following tonights test, the Coyotes will return to the desert for a three-game homestand that is set to begin Tuesday against Dallas. "Id like to see us execute a little better with the puck. Theres some situations where we could be cleaner with the puck," Coyotes head coach Dave Tippett said after Thursdays setback to the Kings. "I thought Mike Smith was excellent, I thought our competing and try was better, but the bottom line is that you have to find a way to win and we didnt do that." The Ducks had won four straight games before having that streak snapped by the visiting Stars on Friday night. The Ducks and Coyotes split six meetings last season and Phoenix has recorded eight wins over the last 13 encounters. Coming off a tough 3-1 loss to the Lincoln Saltdogs on Wednesday night, the Goldeyes bats boomed while Hawkins pitched 5.1 solid innings as Winnipeg whipped Lincoln 12-5. Hawkins, 22, just completed his senior season with Oklahoma City University Stars, a small NAIA school. He kept the Goldeyes in the game long enough for the teams bats to explode. Winnipeg recorded a season-high 17 hits as Josh Mazzola hit a pair of two-run home runs and drove in five. With the win, Winnipeg took a three-game lead on Sioux Falls in the race for first in the American Associations North Division. "I thought he (Hawkins) threw the ball very well," said Goldeyes pitching coach Bill Pulsipher on the TSN 1290 post-game show. "He showed great composure and carried himself with a lot of confidence. I told him to go out there and do his thing. I said the game of baseball is the same no matter where you go. Go out there, get command of your pitches and youll be alright and he was alright." Trailing 1-0 in the top of the fourth, Jon Weber walked and then scored ahead of Josh Mazzola who hit his first two-run homer. Then in the sixth, Luis Alen singled and scored when Mazzola hit his second two-run bomb of the game. Later in the sixth, Amos Ramon singled, Kyle Day singled, David Narodowski grounded out and Ramon and Day each moved up 90 feet. Chris Roberson singled to drive in Ramon and Day and the Goldeyes led 6-1. Alen then singled to send de Caster to third and de Caster scored on a double by Mazzola – his fifth RBI of the night. Alen then scored on a double by Ramon that sent Mazzola to third. Price Kendall then singled home Mazzola and Ramon and the Goldeyes had an 11-4 lead. "Josh Mazzola was awesome," said Pulsipher. "Tommys (batting coach Vaeth) been working with him and Ricks been really patient with him. Weve been waiting for him and he was very good tonight." In the ninth, the Goldeyes made it 12-4 when Kendall drove home David Narodowski with a base hit. While Mazzola had four hits and five RBI, Kendall had three hits and three RBI. Lincolns Alan Rick homered off Nick Carr in the ninth but it didnt matter. The Goldeyes won 12-5, split the four-game series with Lincoln and improved to 13-6 on the season. Hawkins (1-0) gave up four runs on five hits over five and a third innings and finished his first pro game with an ERA of 6.75, but the Goldeyes will take it. They got more than five innings from a rookie starter, gave him some run support and, as a result, improved to 8-5 on the road this season. The Goldeyes got on the bus right after the game and headed off to Fargo, N.D. where theyll face the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks in a three-game weekend series. Game 1 goes Friday night at 7 at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo. Paul Edmonds will have the call on TSN 1290. Ace Walker (2-0, 3.32 ERA) will get the start for Winnipeg. ' ' '

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Waiting to get their hands on the Lombardi Trophy, the Seahawks were surrounded by security guards in orange jackets. It was the first time anyone in that colour stopped them all night. The Seahawks stayed true to their mantra to make each day a championship day. They made Super Bowl Sunday the best day of all with one of the greatest performances in an NFL title game -- sparked by a defence that ranks among the best ever. The Seahawks won their first Super Bowl crown by punishing Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos 43-8. That masterful defence, the NFLs stingiest, never let the five-time MVP get going, disarming the highest-scoring offence in league history. "The only way we could say we were the best defence was to take down the best offence," linebacker Bobby Wagner said. Seattle (16-3) was too quick, too physical and just too good for Denver. What was hyped as a classic matchup between an unstoppable offence and a miserly defence turned into a rout. "Weve been relentless all season," quarterback Russell Wilson said. "Having that mentality of having a championship day every day. At the end of the day, you want to play your best football and that is what we did today." Punctuating Seattles dominance were a 69-yard interception return touchdown by linebacker Malcolm Smith to make it 22-0, and Percy Harvins sensational 87-yard kickoff return to open the second half. "I always imagined myself making great plays," said Smith, the games MVP. "Never thought about being the MVP." When the Seahawks, up by 29 points, forced a Denver punt early in the third quarter, the 12th Man -- and there were legions of them in MetLife Stadium -- began chanting "L-O-B, L-O-B." As in Legion of Boom, the Seahawks hard-hitting secondary, part of a young team with an average age of 26 years, 138 days. "This is an amazing team. Took us four years to get to this point, but they never have taken a step sideways," coach Pete Carroll said. "These guys would not take anything but winning this ballgame." The loss by the Broncos again raised questions about Mannings ability to win the biggest games. He is 11-12 in the post-season, 1-2 in Super Bowls. After the game, he brushed off questions about his legacy. "Certainly to finish this way is very disappointing. Its not an easy pill to swallow," said Manning, who threw for a record 55 touchdowns in 2013, two years after missing an entire season because of neck surgeries. "I dont know if you ever really get over it." He never looked comfortable against a defence some will begin comparing to the 1985 Bears and 2000 Ravens -- other NFL champions who had runaway Super Bowl victories. Seattle forced four turnovers; Denver had 26 all season. All-Pro cornerback Richard Sherman left with a high ankle sprain in the fourth quarter. He celebrated on crutches. "I hope we etched our names in the history books," Sherman said. Wilson, who has an NFL-record 28 wins in his first two pro seasons, including playoffs, had a 23-yard TD pass to Jermaine Kearse late in the third quarter to make it 36-0. Wilson also hit Doug Baldwin for a 10-yard score in the final period in what had become one of the most lopsided Super Bowls. For the fifth time in six meetings between the NFLs No. 1 offence and defence, the D dominated. "Its all about making history," All-Pro safety Earl Thomas said. "This was a dominant performance from top to bottom." Seahawks tight end Luke Willson, from LaSalle, Ont., had two receptions for 17 yards. Denver fell to 2-5 in Super Bowls, and by the end many of Mannings passes resembled the "ducks" Sherman said the All-Pro quarterback sometimes threw. The victory was particularly sweet for Carroll, fired in 1994 by the Jets. He led the Patriots for three seasons and again was canned. After a short stint out of coaching, he took over at Southern California and won two national titles. But he always felt there was unfinished business in the NFL. Carroll finished that business by lifting the Vince Lombardi Trophy, four years after taking charge in Seattle and eight years after the Seahawks lost in their only previous Super Bowl to Pittsburgh. No Super Bowl had been played outdoors in a cold-weather city -- not that the Big Apple was anything close to frozen Sunday, when it was 49 degrees at kickoff. Things went sour for Manning and the Broncos from the very first scrimmage play, and by halftime they were down 22-0 -- their biggest deficit of the season and the only time they didnt score in a half. On that first play, Manning stepped up toward the line just as centre Manny Ramirez snapped the ball. It flew past his incredulous quarterback into the end zone, where Knowshon Moreno dived on it for a safety. A mere 12 seconds in, Seattle led 2-0 with the quickest score in Super Bowl history, beating Chicagos Devin Hesters kickoff return to open the 2007 game -- against Mannings Colts. That one ended much better for Manning as Indianapolis won the championship. This one was a fiasco throughout. Steven Hauschka made 31- and 33-yard field goals for 8-0. Then the Seahawks began scoring touchdowns. Mannings third-down pass to Julius Thomas sailed way too high and directly to safety Kam Chancellor, giving the Seahawks the ball at Denvers 37. A third-down pass interference call on Tony Carter brought Seattle to the 1, and Marshawn Lynch scored to make it 15-0. Then Smith made his second huge play in two weeks. His interception clinched the NFC championship win over San Francisco. Cliff Avril got to Mannings arm as he was throwing, the ball fluttered directly to Smith, who took off down the left sideline for a 69-yard interception TD. Manning trudged to the sideline, a look of disgust on his face, Denvers reputation as an unstoppable force erased.

Cal Dunlap, the Reno lawyer representing the woman, confirmed the settlement on Friday but declined to discuss the terms of the agreement. "The matter has been resolved and I have no further comment," he told The Associated Press. The Reno Gazette-Journal first reported the settlement on its website. It also dismisses claims against Harrahs employees whom the woman had accused of covering up the alleged sexual assault in Roethlisbergers penthouse suite in July 2008. Dunlap first told Washoe District Court Judge Brent Adams in papers filed last Nov. 30 that his client wanted to have a stay lifted so the case could be dismissed because a settlement was pending. "All parties have reached a resolution of all claims and counterclaims," he wrote. Adams formally dismissed the case Dec. 27 but neither side had publicized it until now..dddddddddddd David Cornwell, Roethlisbergers lawyer, did not immediately return a telephone call seeking comment on Friday. His agent, Ryan Tollner, said neither he nor Roethlisberger would have any comment. The Nevada Supreme Court had ruled against the two-time Super Bowl champion quarterbacks request in August to have the case moved from Reno to Carson City because it was closer to where the alleged incident had occurred at Harrahs in Stateline. The woman was a VIP casino hostess at Harrahs when she said Roethlisberger allegedly lured her to his room under the pretense of fixing his television. Roethlisberger was in town at the time to play in a celebrity golf tournament. Roethlisberger denied the allegations. The original lawsuit filed in 2009 sought a minimum of US$440,000 in damages from the quarterback, at least $50,000 in damages from the Harrahs officials and an unspecified amount in punitive damages. The woman said she never filed a criminal complaint because she feared Harrahs would side with Roethlisberger and she would be fired. ' ' '

DALLAS -- The second makeover of the Dallas Mavericks in as many seasons just got tougher. Star forward Dirk Nowitzki had arthroscopic surgery on his ailing right knee Friday and the 11-time All-Star isnt expected to resume on-court activities for about six weeks. Dallas opens the regular season in 11 days at the Los Angeles Lakers. "Its never going to be easy to lose a game-changer for six weeks," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said. "Were going to have to make up for it in other areas." The 34-year-old Nowitzki has experienced swelling in the knee most of the preseason, twice having the knee drained since training camp started Sept. 29. The knee didnt improve after rest, ice and light conditioning work, leading to the decision to have surgery. The 2011 NBA finals MVP played just one preseason game -- the opener in his native Germany. The Mavericks already have the challenge of working five new players into the rotation, and one of them can play Nowitzkis position -- 13-year veteran Elton Brand. Vince Carter, another veteran who joined Dallas last season, also could slide into that spot. The Mavericks were never much of a threat to defend their 2011 title last season after deciding not to bring back several key contributors. On top of the roster shuffling, Nowitzki had conditioning trouble and a sore right knee early in the season and eventually sat four games. He didnt miss any more time after that. This is likely to be the most extended absence of Nowitzkis career. Hes never missed more than nine games in a season. "Im sure youre all not expecting us to be good now, so where is the pressure?" Carter said. "Nobodys giving us a chance with or without him, so for us weve just got to play and let the chips fall where they may." Nowitzki is the franchises career leader in points and has averaged 22.9 points and 8.3 rebounds in 14 seasons.

NASHVILLE -- A person familiar with the situation says the Tennessee Titans will be visiting with four-time NFL MVP Peyton Manning in his search for a new team. ESPN.com first reported Titans coach Mike Munchak will meet with Manning after a session with Miami coach Joe Philbin. The person spoke to The Associated Press Monday about Mannings meeting with the Titans on the condition of anonymity because the location and time of that meeting remains confidential. Titans owner Bud Adams made it known Sunday he will do whatever it takes to sign Manning to get back to the playoffs and win his teams first Super Bowl. Adams told The Tennessean he had talked to Mannings agent, Tom Condon, asking for a visit with the quarterback. Manning has plenty of connections to Tennessee. He starred at the University of Tennessee, leading to his first name becoming a popular choice for newborns in this state. His wife is from Memphis, and Manning already knows the Titans facility a bit, having practiced against Tennessee a few years ago when the Colts came to town for some joint practices. Munchak also was a teammate of Archie Manning in 1982 and briefly in 1983 with the then-Houston Oilers. Munchak just hired Dennis Polian -- son of former Colts general manager Bill Polian -- as his assistant. But the biggest key is Adams, the 89-year-old billionaire who wants back in the playoffs. His Titans have been only twice since 2004 with both trips in 2007 and 2008 lasting only one game each. A meeting with Manning could come in Houston where Adams still lives after relocating his Oilers to Tennessee in 1997. "I want Manning," Adams told The Tennessean. "Id love to see him in Titan blue after watching him so many years with the Colts. ... I want him. I am ready to do what it takes to get him aboard, and I think hed be the guy to get us into the playoffs." The Titans already have veteran Matt Hasselbeck, signed to a three-year contract last July, and Jake Locker picked with the No. 8 overall selection in the 2011 draft. But Hasselbeck is due $5.5 million in salary this year after getting a chunk of his deal last season. So far, Manning has met only with the Denver Broncos and Arizona Cardinals. He was expected to be heading back to Florida, but did not show at the Dolphins headquarters Monday despite reports he would meet with the team. Dolphins owner Stephen Ross arrived at the team complex at midmorning, and several players -- including quarterback Chad Henne -- showed up around the same time to work out. Henne is a free agent and not expected back this season. A media stakeout at the complex began when a local TV station camera crew arrived at 4 a.m. Half a dozen TV cameras and a handful of reporters eventually gathered across the street. They werent allowed on the teams property, but a Dolphins official brought out water, pizza and napkins. Curious motorists occasionally pulled up to ask for an update. Manning spent nearly 6 1/2 hours at the Arizona Cardinals headquarters and training facility on Sunday in meetings designed to lure the superstar to the desert. The session followed a meeting of nearly six hours Manning had at the Broncos facility in Denver on Friday night. The two sessions were evidence that, for the time being at least, Arizona and Denver appear to be the top two contenders.

jerseys cheap .Y. -- Kyle Williams has taken the next big step forward on a surgically repaired left foot. INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indiana Pacers faced Kevin Durants best effort and held on. Durant scored 44 points, but Danny Granger had 13 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter to help the Pacers beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 103-98 on Friday night for their fourth straight win. Durant, the NBAs No. 2 scorer, posted his second-best scoring total of the season. It was the most a player has scored against the Pacers this season. "Hes probably the top offensive player in the NBA," Granger said. "Theyve got him at 6-10, but hes really 7 feet. You cant get to his jump shot, and hes got crossovers and stuff that a guy his size isnt supposed to have. Hes tough to defend. He got a lot of points, but we got the win." Roy Hibbert had 21 points and 12 rebounds, David West scored 14 points and Paul George added eight points and a career-high 16 rebounds for the Pacers (34-21), who have won eight of 10. The Pacers felt it was an important to beat one of the top teams in the Western Conference so close to playoff time. Indiana is 1 1/2 games ahead of the Atlanta Hawks for the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference. "Theyre fighting for a No. 1 seed," Granger said. "Were fighting for a seed in our conference. That wasnt a game that either team could afford to lose and we came out on top, so I think that says a lot about us as a team and the steps that were taking." Oklahoma City wasted an outstanding effort by Durant, who made 15 of 24 field goals and 11 of 13 free throws. The Thunder, second in the league with 103 points per game, have scored fewer than 100 in four straight games. Russell Westbrook had 21 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists, but he shot 7 for 23 from the field as the Thunder lost their third consecutive game. "You cant panic," Durant said. "Three in a row is tough, especially late in the season, but you cant panic. We played hard all three games, and we came back in this one." Oklahoma City cut a 24-point deficit to 10 in the fourth quarter, but a step-back jumper by Granger with Durant in his face gave Indiana a 94-82 lead with 3:21 remaining and forced the Thunder to call a timeout. Oklahoma kept rallying as Durant was fouled on a dunk, and he made the free throw to cut Indianas lead to 96-91 with 1:08 to go. Kendrick Perkins trimmed Indianas lead to 97-933 on a reverse layup with 37 seconds left, but Darren Collisons jumper from near the free throw line with 16 seconds remaining and time running out on the shot clock gave Indiana a cushion.dddddddddddd Westbrook banked in a 3-pointer with 5.5 seconds left to cut Indianas lead to 101-98. Granger made two free throws with 4.7 seconds left to seal the Pacers win. "Its one of those situations where you try so hard a certain amount of times and just cant seem to get over the hump," Oklahoma City guard James Harden said. "But we shouldnt have put ourselves in that situation to begin with." Hibberts tip for a long putback gave the Pacers a 56-41 lead late in the second quarter, prompting Indianas crowd to stand for the final 15 seconds of the half. The Pacers shot 54 per cent before the break and held Oklahoma City to 42 per cent. Hibbert had 16 points in the first half, matching Durant. Westbrook scored three points on 1-for-8 shooting before the break. Indiana continued its strong shooting early in the second half. A bucket by West gave Indiana a 64-43 lead. Three mid-range jumpers by Granger fueled a stretch that pushed the advantage to 72-48 and forced Oklahoma City to call timeout. The Thunder missed five of six shots to start the second half. The Thunder chipped away late in the third quarter, trimming Indianas lead to 75-61 at the end of the period. The Pacers shot 7 for 26 from the field in the third quarter, but they never lost confidence. "Were resourceful," Hibbert said. "Were a different team than we have been in the past. We grind out wins. We dont crack like we used to at the end of games." The Pacers earned Oklahoma Citys respect. "They have a great team," Durant said. "They can stack up against anybody. They have inside, outside presence. They have a lot of weapons. Theyre going to be tough in the East. We got a taste of it tonight." NOTES: Indiana shot 55 per cent in the first quarter to lead 32-20. ... Hibbert had four blocks in the first quarter and Oklahoma Citys Serge Ibaka had three. Ibaka finished with seven blocks. ... Indiana went on a 12-0 run to take a 35-20 lead early in the second quarter. ... George had 10 rebounds in the first half, matching his career high. ... Indiana had a sellout crowd of 18,165 for just the fifth time this season. ' ' '

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- After Golden States difficult road loss two nights ago in Oklahoma City, Stephen Curry was anxious to avoid a repeat performance Sunday against the Sacramento Kings. The dynamic guard came up with big play after big play, none bigger than his two free throws with 8.6 seconds left that helped the Warriors edge the Kings 115-113. Curry made five 3-pointers, scored 36 points and also added 10 assists for the Warriors, who had lost two straight and five of six. It was the sixth time in his career that Curry had matched or exceeded 30 points and 10 assists. The first five came in his rookie season. The Friday loss to Oklahoma City had been especially painful. Russell Westbrooks 3-pointer with 0.1 seconds left in overtime gave the Thunder a 113-112 victory. "Its been frustrating of late, not being able to close out games, especially on the road," Curry said. "Everyone pitched in. It was a good learning lesson for us to continue to stick to the program." Klay Thompson connected on a career-high eight 3-pointers and added 28 points. Golden State hit 15 of 25 3s (60 per cent). Curry is in a terrific grove, making 15 of 28 over the last three games. "They are good players and tough to cover," Kings centre DeMarcus Cousins said. "In the beginning we didnt make it difficult for them. Later in the game we did. If we had done that early on maybe it would have been a different game." The Warriors had a 16-point lead in the third quarter and led by 10 entering the fourth. But the Kings rallied and took the lead several times in the fourth, when they outscored Golden State 33-25. After Currys two free throws broke a 113-all tie, Andrew Bogut blocked a driving reverse layup by Isaiah Thomas in the closing seconds and grabbed the rebound to secure the victory. "I saw Klay get beat and had an idea Isaiah would not be going up against me on the right side," said Bogut, who had 12 rebounds, three blocks and two steals. "I kind of read it and thankfully I got the block." Harrison Barnes and David Lee had 11 points for the Warriors, who ended a four-game road trip with a 2-2 record. In foul trouble throughout, Cousins had 24 points in just over 20 minutes. Marcus Thornton hit five 3-pointers and scored all of his 21 points in the second half, including 11 in the fourth. Thomas had 19 points and eight assists, but also committed seven of Sacramentos season-high 24 turnovers that led to 33 Warrior points. Patrick Patterson scored 18 points and Jason Thompson added 10. It was another frustrating loss for the Kings, who have droppeed four straight overall and are now 3-7 at home.dddddddddddd "I think a lot of those turnovers today was us being soft and us telegraphing our passes," Thomas said. "Especially in the second quarter when I had four or five turnovers. Two or three of them I just telegraphed - they knew where it was going." Trailing by two points twice with under a minute to play, Cousins responded with a pair of basket from close range, the second one tying the game at 113 with 12.6 seconds left. A 3-pointer by Thomas put the Kings in front 104-102 with 3:51 left. But Thompsons corner 3 and a jumper by Curry put the Warriors on top, 107-106. With the Kings down by 11 points, Thornton made a 3 to ignite a 12-2 run. Cousins ended the surge by converting a layup and making two free throws to cut Golden States lead to 100-96. "What I like about our guys is that it could have been a 16-point deficit that turned into 30, but it turned into a two-point lead and giving ourselves a chance to win," Kings coach Michael Malone said. "We were only one defensive rebound away from winning the game." After a strong first half, it was Thompson and Curry continuing their perimeter success in the third quarter, when they combined for five 3-pointers. Curry scored 11 points and Thompson had three 3-pointers and nine points, giving Golden State a 90-80 heading into the fourth. "I have a great backcourt with two guys that can light up a scoreboard," Warriors coach Mark Jackson said. "The thing that I love most about them is people fall in love with shooting, which is the obvious, but they compete. They have really developed into a good defensive tandem. I thought both guys did an outstanding job on the defensive end." Cousins was called for his fourth foul at the 7:45 mark of the third quarter. He argued the call and was quickly given his fifth technical of the season and went to the bench with the Kings trailing 66-59. Warriors starting forward Andre Iguodala sat out his fifth straight game with a left hamstring strain. Notes: The arena power went out during pregame introductions and lasted for 12 minutes. When power was restored, the Kings introduction was skipped and the game had no public address announcer until midway through the first quarter. . Historically, this has been a competitive matchup, with the Warriors holding a 187-185 edge. . Three Kings starters, including Cousins, had two fouls by the midway point in the opening quarter. . Warriors reserve guard Toney Douglas, who played with the Kings last year, has missed the last 11 games with a stress problem in his lower left leg. ' ' '

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Ryan Lilja will step out of retirement to reunite with Peyton Manning. The veteran offensive lineman agreed to terms Wednesday with the Denver Broncos, who are desperate for a starting centre following a season ending knee injury to Dan Koppen. Lilja, who turns 32 in October, has quite a bit of familiarity with Manning after playing guard for six seasons in Indianapolis. And while Jeff Saturday was Mannings customary centre with the Colts, hes now working as an ESPN analyst. The 6-foot-2, 290-pound Lilja made a similar switch last season as he went from guard to centre for Kansas City. After the season, he announced his intention to retire. But his retirement didnt last all that long. Koppen tore his left ACL in a drill last weekend after the Broncos brought him back last month to fill in for J.D. Walton, whos had a setback in his return from ankle surgery. Manny Ramirez, who took most of the snaps at centre during Denvers off-season practices, was working with Manning the last few days in training camp. He sent a few hikes high, but nothing out of Mannings reach. The team also recently brought in Steve Vallos, a six-year veteran who has played in Seattle, Cleveland, Philadelphia and Jacksonville. "We always hate losing people for the season, but we will march on," coach John Fox said. These days, the offensive line responsible for keeping Manning safe and secure is pretty banged up. All-Pro left tackle Ryan Clady has been limited at training camp due to a right shoulder. Tackle Orlando Franklin (toe, shoulder) and guard Chris Kuper (ankle) are also coming off surgeries. Franklin is back with the starters, while Kuper is going through drills on an adjacent field in shorts. On Wednesday, the Broncos received another scare when cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie went down with a left ankle injury and had to be carted off the field. "I am not over concerned," Fox said after practice. "But any time a player misses time, I am concerned. We will just get him healthy and get him back out there." Guard Justin Boren also had to be helped off the field with a big toe ailment.

TORONTO – The Mikhail Grabovski who has emerged early in the Maple Leafs first round series with Boston does not resemble the one who meekly concluded a lost regular season. "Much different hockey player," Leafs coach Randy Carlyle stated with emphasis a day before Game 3 against the Bruins on Monday night. "Much more noticeable. Much more on the puck. Much more determined. Much more physical. Lot of muches." Returning to the feisty, aggressive template which had defined his career before 2013, Grabovski totaled nearly 17 minutes in Saturdays series-evening Game 2 victory – the most hes played in well over a month – the 29-year-old dangling a fine feed to James van Riemsdyk for the fourth and final Toronto goal. Eagerly awaiting the first postseason of his NHL career, Grabovski has admittedly been lifted by the aura and intensity of the second season, invigorated by all that is on the line. "I dont look at it like its a different season," he explained to TSN.ca on Sunday afternoon, "I just look at like its time to play hockey or time to go home. "This is what I needed," he continued of the postseason, the remnants of his worst NHL season now in the past. "Im in playoff already, flush out everything and start a new game." Grabovski played in 367 career regular season games before his first NHL playoff this spring. The early experience, he says, is reminiscent of a run to the Calder Cup with the Hamilton Bulldogs in 2007, an accomplishment "you remember for all your life". "Playoff teams are the best teams," he said of the competition and need for top performance. "Its not teams behind us, its only the best teams. Every game, every shift is like history in my life." Determination in that manner has showed itself in the opening two games with Boston. Unlike a whole string of his teammates in recent years, Grabovski has actually thrived in his career against the Bruins, posting 14 goals in 31 career games. Something about the matchup with the 2011 Stanley Cup champions inspires the Belarusian pivot. "I just enjoy playing against the best players in the world," he stated. "They won the Stanley Cup before and I know the level how you can play to beat them or play hard against this team." Whats been most striking about his performance against the Bruins, in recent years and in the first two games of this series, is a willingness at 5-foot-11 and 183 pounds to attack, most specifically against Bostons 6-foot-9 "monster of a player" as Carlyle described him, Zdeno Chara. "I really enjoy playing against him," Grabovski said of Chara, motivated by the challenge of facing the former Norris Trophy winner. "For me, I need to use my quickness because hes big and [its] pretty hard to play slow hockey with him. I need to be quicker, but its really hard." That speed and quickness has allowed Grabovski to be a "noticeable" presence in each of the first two games – one of the few such Leafs in a one-sided series opening loss – aggressive on pucks while wreaking havoc for the Bruins defence on the forecheck. The encounters with Chara over the years appear to have brought not only physical anguish – including the infamous concussion hit and comeback game-winner in 2011 – but a few lessons as well. "He teach me a lot of things," Grabovski indicated of the Bruins captain. "He teach me to be faster, he teach me to be stronger and he always hit people so I need to be careful." Rejuvenated by the atmosphere of playoff hockey and the Bruins matchup, Grabovski has also benefited from a visit with an old coach this past week. From the age of 14-18, Vladislav Astapenko was Grabovskis junior hockey coach and he just happened to be in Boston earlier this week coaching a Belarusian team at a local tournament. "Hes always supported me," Grabovski said of Astapenko, a shooting coach with whom Grabovski has worked during past summers in Belarus, likely to do so again in the upcoming offseason. "Hes excited to watch the next games because we come back to Boston for sure." Of the advice that his former coach passed along, Grabovski said most of it related to shooting the puck. "Shoot quicker," the student recalled of the wisdom. "Hes a shooting coach. He knows how to shoot properly and stick-handle so he tells me use the wrist!" The mystery still lingers as to what exactly happened to the Leafs highest-paid forward this season. In what stands as unquestionably the worst year of his career, Grabovski totaled a quaint nine goals and 16 points, a seemingly lost factor on many and most nights. A different player has shown up in the early going, however, of the Leafs first playoff run in nine years, the fiery, tenacious player of old. "Im excited about sunshine outside, excited about playing hockey in the summertime," he concluded. "And I love playing against Boston."

cheap nfl jerseys from china . MARIE, Ont.KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Chiefs parted ways with veteran defensive back Dunta Robinson, who never quite lived up to expectations last season, and signed CFL wide receiver Weston Dressler on Friday. Robinson was just one year into a $13.75 million, three-year deal that the Chiefs hoped would provide a veteran presence in what became a vastly retooled defensive backfield. Instead, Robinson was slowed by a series of nagging injuries and appeared in only nine games, making 14 tackles and defending just two passes. He was also part of a defence that was torched by Indianapolis wide receivers in a loss that knocked Kansas City out of the playoffs. The move was widely expected not only because the 31-year-old Robinson struggled most of the season, gradually losing playing time to undrafted free agent Marcus Cooper, but also because the cash-strapped Chiefs would save more than $3 million. The Chiefs were bumping along the just below the salary cap at the beginning of the week, and theyre expected to make more moves -- perhaps restructuring some of the long-term contracts signed by the previous regime -- so that they can sign their draft class and be active in free agency. Kansas City is expected to lose Pro Bowl left tackle Branden Albert, who was franchised last season, though there are several in-house candidates to replace him. Offensive linemen Jon Asamoah and Geoff Schwartz are also hitting freee agency, as are defensive tackle Tyson Jackson, safety Kendrick Lewis and Pro Bowl punt returner Dexter McCluster.dddddddddddd The move to sign Dressler, who spent the past six years in the CFL, could be in response to McCluster likely demanding a contract far more lucrative than the Chiefs are willing to pay. Dressler, a former North Dakota standout, caught 442 passes for 6,531 yards and 43 touchdowns for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, helping them win the Grey Cup this past season. Hes also proven that he can return kicks and punts, in essence many of the things McCluster did for the Chiefs. "Ever since the first time I touched a football, thats something I dreamed about, having an opportunity to play in the NFL, on the games biggest stage," Dressler said during a recent news conference, when he was released by Saskatchewan and finalizing a deal with an NFL team. It was unclear at the time that his landing spot would be Kansas City. "To kind of get to that point now is pretty surreal," Dressler said. The Chiefs didnt announce Dresslers signing until Friday, even though his name popped up on the leagues transaction report earlier in the week. Terms of his deal were not available. "Money wasnt a factor for me in this decision," Dressler said. "Its a decision based on an opportunity I feel like I have a very good chance to make a football team." ' ' '

ATLANTA -- Kyle Korver said Atlanta coach Mike Budenholzer "laid into us" at halftime. The response from Korver and the Hawks, especially in the third quarter, earned postgame praise from the first-year coach. Korver scored 24 points, including a trio of 3-pointers in a third-quarter stretch that gave Atlanta the lead, and the Hawks overcame Kevin Loves 43 points to beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 120-113 on Saturday night. Korver hit each of his four shots and had 12 points in the third, when the Hawks outscored the Timberwolves 38-21. "I thought the guys responded," Korver said. "Obviously, it was a great third quarter for us. Hopefully he doesnt have to talk to us like that all the time. It worked tonight." Budenholzer said defence sparked Atlantas comeback from an 11-point deficit in the second period. "I think the third quarter tonight was something we can reference going forward on how we want to play, particularly defensively, to hold them to 21 points in a quarter with the way they can score," Budenholzer said. Budenholzer said guard DeMarre Carroll, who had 19 points, "set a defensive tone for us and I think everybody else follows that." Paul Millsap, guarded by Love much of the night in a matchup of All-Stars, had 20 points and 13 rebounds before fouling out late in the game. Even with the dominant third quarter, the Hawks had to hold on late. A jam by Minnesotas Corey Brewer with 2:55 remaining cut Atlantas lead to 107-104. Jeff Teague, who had 19 points, drove for a layup and Carrolls free throws pushed the lead to seven points. Loves 3-pointer again trimmed the margin to three before Atlantas Gustavo Ayon banked in an unlikely scoop shot to thwart the comeback attempt. Love, who grabbed 19 rebounds while playing with a sore left ankle, had 21 points in the final period and finished two points shy of his season high. "I didnt even know I had (43) to be honest," Love said. "I think (Kevin Martin) told me after the game. I was just trying to get us back in the game by any means. My teammates set me up with a lot of good shots but, yeah, a loss right now, its just tough." Love said the Timberwolves missed centre Nikola Pekovic, who sat out his third straight game with bursitis in his right ankle. Pekovic could have been especially important against the undersized Hawks. "To not have Peck in a game like this, really the last (three) games, its really tough, just because he takes up so much space," Love said. "Youre having to make up for 20 points and 10 rebounds." Martin had 17 points for the Timberwolves (23-24), who fell under .500 with their second straight loss. Korver, guarded closely by Brewer much of the game, missed his only 3-point attempt in the first half. Korver finally broke free to sink his first 3 with 7:32 remaining in the third quarter for a 60-all tie, extending his NBA record to 115 consecutive games with a 3. Korver added another 3-pointer about a minute later and sank his third with 4:20 remaining in the quarter, giving Atlanta a 73-62 lead. "Once he got one, its tough," Brewer said. "I tried to chase him and make it tough on him all night. ... But hes a great shooter. He has the record for a reason." Minnesota opened the final period with quick 3s by J.J. Barea and Alexey Shved to trim Atlantas lead to 86-81. Barea was ejected with 6:43 remaining. He was called for a technical foul on Minnesotas end of the court and argued his case at the other end, stepping inside the 3-point arc before finally being tossed as Korver was setting up for a free throw. NOTES: Millsap fouled out with 4:19 remaining. ... Ricky Rubio had 11 assists for Minnesota. ... The Hawks signed F Cartier Martin to a 10-day contract and he was active to start his second stint with the team. He appeared in 25 games with the Hawks before he was waived on Jan. 7 and then signed two 10-day contracts with the Bulls. ... The Hawks played their first home game since Wednesday nights game against Detroit was postponed until April 8 due to the winter storm that paralyzed the city.

MIRANDA DE EBRO, Spain -- Third-division club Mirandes extended its fairytale run in the Copa del Rey to the semifinals Tuesday after a stoppage-time goal secured a 2-1 victory over Espanyol to put the team through on the away-goal rule. Spectators at the 6,000-capacity Anduva Municipal stadium invaded the field following the final whistle, moments after Cesar Fernandez de la Heras crouched low to head Pablo Infantes free kick inside the near post for the 92nd-minute winner. Infante, who works a bank job during the day, cancelled out Rui Fontes 47th-minute opener for the visitors with his competition-high sixth goal 10 minutes later, when his long-range shot deflected off a defender to land beyond keeper Francisco Casilla. Trailing 3-2 against the topflight club after the first leg, Mirandes enjoyed the better chances before Fontes opener.dddddddddddd But the hosts, led by Infante, continued to press forward and forced Casilla into making a number of key saves -- including in the 90th -- before the semiprofessional team finally prevailed. "This is incredible, this is incredible," Infante screamed while mobbed by fans. "We all ran, we all fought, we all worked together." In a reference to his clubs take on the famed "This is Anfield" sign at Liverpools home ground, Infante added: "At the entrance (of the stadium) it says This is Anduva so you know what to expect." Villarreal and Racing Santander were the othe topflight clubs to exit at the hands of Mirandes, which is the first third-tier club to reach the last four since Figueres in 2002. ' ' '

EDMONTON -- Vladimir Tarasenko had a goal and an assist as the St. Louis Blues won their season-high sixth game in a row, 5-2 over the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday. Chris Stewart, Maxim Lapierre, David Backes and Patrick Berglund also scored for the Blues (30-7-5) who have gone 11-1-2 in their last 14 games to move two points back of the Central Division-leading Chicago Blackhawks. Nail Yakupov and Mark Arcobello replied for the Oilers (14-27-5) who have lost five of their last six games and 11 of 14. St. Louis controlled the pace in the early stages of the game, out-shooting Edmonton 9-1 through the first eight minutes with Oilers starter Ilya Bryzgalov forced to make a number of big saves. Edmonton had the best scoring chance of the opening half of the first period, however, as Jordan Eberle picked up a rebound in the blue paint before goalie Brian Elliott dove across to make a pad save. The Blues took a 1-0 lead with just over seven minutes to play in the first as Stewart teed up a blast from the point on the power play that cleanly beat Bryzgalov for his 14th goal of the season. Edmonton had a great chance to pull even to start the second as Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had a clean short-handed breakaway, but Elliott was able to make a big glove save on his backhand shot. The Oilers took advantage of another giveaway at the St. Louis blueline a minute-and-a-half into the second period, however, as David Perron sent Yakupov streaking up the wing and he put a wrist shot past Elliott. The Blues responded just 42 seconds later, though, as Lapierre pushed rookie Brad Hunt off the puck along the boards and calmly took the puck to the net and hooked a shot past Bryzgalov. It was difficult to tell how the goal actually went in, but the refs checked for a hole in the net and the goal counted. Lapierre was playing in his 500th career NHL game. Edmonton kept pace with a goal five minutes into the middle frame to make it 2-2. Luke Gazdic sent a pass from behind the net and Arcobello was able to chip it up and over Elliott and into the St. Louis net. St. Louis regained the lead with nine minutes left to play in the second as the Blues power play unit kept the Oilers hemmed in their own zone for a minute-and-a-half before Backes finally picked the top corner for his 17th of the season. The Blues made it 4-2 with six minutes left in the second as a face-off win allowed Tarasenko to score on a quick shot from the top of the circle. Blues forward T.J. Oshie had to be helped off the ice late in the third period after a knee-on-knee collision with Taylor Hall. Berglund iced the game with an empty-net goal in the final minute. The Blues play the second game of a three-game Western Canadian trip on Thursday in Calgary. The Oilers next play host to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday. Notes: The Blues came into the game riding a wave of success against Edmonton, having defeated the Oilers in six of seven and in 12 of the previous 15 meetings. They had also won three in a row and six of their last eight in Edmontona The disparity between the two teams was well illustrated as the final Olympic teams were announced on Tuesday. St. Louis has 10 players heading to Sochi for the Winter Olympics, while Edmonton has just three. One of those Oilers, Anton Belov was picked for the host Russian team, despite being a healthy scratch for Edmonton the last three gamesa Blues goalie Jaroslav Halak returned to the lineup from an illness. Defenceman Roman Polak (lower-body) and leading scorer Alex Steen (concussion) remain outa Oilers defenceman Corey Potter (groin injury) missed his sixth game while defenceman Philip Larsen continued to be absent with an illnessa Oiler forward Ales Hemsky left the game after taking a first period hit from St. Louis Ryan Reaves.

This week they discuss Spencer Haywood, Josh Hamilton, the excellence of womens hockey and the NHL and NHLPA taking a historic and progressive step forward.CHICAGO -- Neither the brutal cold nor the leagues worst defence could stop Josh McCown and the Bears. Instead, Chicago jumped right back into the playoff race. McCown threw for a career-high four touchdowns, and the Bears scored on their first eight possessions to grab a share of the NFC North lead with a 45-28 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on a frigid Monday night. The Bears (7-6) retired Hall of Famer Mike Ditkas number at halftime and pulled even with Detroit in the division race on a night when the game-time temperature was in single digits and the wind chill factor was below zero. The loss left Dallas (7-6) a game behind Philadelphia in the NFC East and owner Jerry Jones calling for more aggressive play-calling on defence. The bone-chilling conditions didnt stop McCown from throwing for 348 yards or keep the Bears from running away with a lopsided victory. It was one they desperately needed after consecutive losses, and although Detroit holds the head-to-head sweep, the Bears are back in the thick of the playoff race. "All we could do is try to beat the Dallas Cowboys," coach Marc Trestman said. "We kept it as simple as that. We didnt get into all the hypotheticals and all the things that go into winning or losing a game." Alshon Jefferys leaping catch between two defenders in the corner of the end zone in the closing seconds of the second quarter gave the Bears a 24-14 lead, and they continued to pour it on in the second half after a gut-wrenching overtime loss at Minnesota last week. McCown, making his fourth straight start with Jay Cutler sidelined by a high left ankle sprain, became the first Bears quarterback to throw for 300 or more yards in three straight games. And for that, DeMarcus Ware blamed Dallas defence. "If you were back there quarterbacking and we played the way we played you probably would have five touchdowns," he said. McCown, meanwhile, insisted hes still the backup. And Trestman said the plan with Cutler hasnt changed. "Well see where Jay is this week," he said. "Hell have to be released by the doctors and when Jay is ready to play, hell be playing." Brandon Marshall caught six passes for 100 yards, and Jeffery added 84 yards receiving after breaking his own team record the previous week with 249. Matt Forte chipped in with 102 yards rushing and 73 receiving, and the Bears racked up 490 yards in all.dddddddddddd "Basically, we will have to make some adjustments in what we are doing defensively," Jones said. "What that usually means is taking more risks on defence. But if youre going to have the kind of match like we had tonight or certainly in New Orleans you have to take some risks. We have to double up and Im sure that will be part of the plan on defence; more risks." Tony Romo threw for three touchdowns but completed just 11 of 20 passes for 104 yards for Dallas. DeMarco Murray ran for 146 yards against the leagues worst run defence, but the Cowboys were overmatched after winning two straight. They also lost linebacker Sean Lee to another injury -- this time a neck issue after making a tackle in the third quarter. He missed the previous two games with a hamstring problem. "Certainly, it was a disappointing loss and the loss stings," coach Jason Garrett said. "The worst thing we can do is have a hangover after this loss." The game-time temperature was 8 degrees with the wind chill at minus 9, but the freezing conditions did nothing to slow either team in the early going. Garrett said both teams handled it well. Murray burned Chicago for 52 yards on six carries on the games opening possession to set up a 2-yard scoring pass from Romo to Dez Bryant, but the Bears scored just about every time they got the ball. After Bryants TD, McCown tied it with a 4-yard pass to Earl Bennett and put Chicago ahead 14-7 early in the second quarter with a 7-yard scramble, leaping at the goal line and getting spun in midair. Jason Witten tied it at 14 when he dragged Major Wright across the goal line on a 10-yard touchdown catch, but the Bears grabbed a three-point lead on Robbie Goulds 27-yard field goal with 1:33 remaining in the half. Jeffery added to it with that neat catch after Dallas was forced to punt. "Im just trying to give him a chance to go up and make the play but not really put the ball in jeopardy, so to speak," McCown said. "My part was relative easy to the catch." NOTES: The record low temperature for a Bears home game is 2 degrees against Green Bay on Dec. 22, 2008. The lowest wind chill was minus 15 against the Packers on Dec. 18, 1983. ... MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota Twins All-Star Joe Mauer is not in the lineup for the second straight night after being scratched in the series opener against Kansas City with back spasms. The Twins put Drew Butera at catcher for the game Wednesday night. Mauers back tightened up before batting practice Tuesday and he was scratched. While he was criticized for missing too many games last season, Mauer has been one of the Twins most durable players this year. He has played in 131 of a possible 142 games entering Wednesday, splitting his time among catcher, DH and first base. Mauers absence is a big break for the Royals and Wednesdays starter, Luke Hochevar. Mauer is hitting .355 for his career against the Royals and .519 against Hochevar.

Wholesale Jerseys China .Y. -- Wil Myers has spent this week making a major name for himself in minor league baseball.TORONTO -- Milos Raonic is the last Canadian left in the Rogers Cup mens tournament. Raonic disposed of Viktor Troicki of Serbia 6-3, 6-4 on Tuesday, while fellow countrymen Frank Dancevic and Vasek Pospisil lost their matches, Raonic said he felt no unusual pressure playing before his hometown crowd. "Obviously its a little bit different when you got on the court, but before the match I really didnt change anything the way I would normally," he said. The 21-year-old from Thornhill, Ont., appeared completely at ease as he recorded the first Rogers Cup victory in his short, rapidly rising career. His next opponent could be Olympic champion Andy Murray who plays in the tournament Wednesday. "I played him earlier this year," Raonic said. "I know if I play well, Ill have my opportunities." Earlier in the day, Juan Monaco of Argentina defeated Pospisil of Vancouver 7-5, 6-4 and Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan defeated Dancevic of Niagara Falls, Ont., 6-3, 7-5. "I dont think there was really too much nerves," Raonic said. "Maybe one ball, I maybe overran a little bit and rushed through that point. "But other than that, I sort of came out and was pretty fluid and relaxed throughout the match from the beginning to the end." Near the end, Raonic said he might have tried to force things in his return game on Troickis serve. "I was making some sloppy errors and giving away too many points at that point," he said. Raonics serve is his biggest weapon and he hammered seven aces in the match that took one hour eight minutes to play. He would like to continue to improve other aspects of his game so that as his career evolves he will be known for more than a big serve. "I hope so," he said. "Thats definitely the plan. Thats what I am going to need to do if I am going to achieve the things I want to achieve. "But no matter what, my serve is going to be my best part and probably the first thing that comes out of peoples mouths when they sort of come to describe me. Maybe at one point people will get sick of talking about it and Ill be doing something else well." Raonic gave his hometown fans lots to talk about on Tuesday. He won the first set after breakiing Troickis serve in the eighth game and then held his own serve.dddddddddddd The top-rated Canadian player broke service again in the third game of the second set. And then held his own serve again, finishing it off with an ace to go ahead 3-1 in the set. Raonic overcame a couple of double faults in the sixth game of the second set to go ahead 4-2, again finishing it with an ace, his fourth of the match. Raonic entered the tournament ranked 24th in the world and Troicki 33rd. Raonic was at the Olympics where he lost to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France in a long, gruelling match. "As far as the Olympics goes, it was a really good experience," he said. "The best part was being around the other athletes. I didnt get to stay that many days during the competition. I stayed a few days before and the morning after the ceremony and I left and was staying close to Wimbledon and came back for two more." Raonic said the most exciting part of his Olympic experience is "the feeling of being surrounded by so much greatness." If he didnt feel any undue pressure playing at home, he said there also was no particular feeling of relief in getting the first one out of the way. "There was one point of relief," said Raonic. "At the end of the second set just because I was getting a little sloppy with my return game and just really to hold it and not have to come back and sort of regroup on that part. So I think that was a bit of relief. "But I dont think the whole -- just getting the match out of the way, I dont think of that as a relief." When he was asked if there was any result from this Rogers Cup that would leave him satisfied, he smiled and said: "No. I dont get satisfied until I achieve a lot. I expect a lot out from myself and Im going to push myself to achieve that. When I get satisfied, I think my career is going to be in trouble." Raonic then added that hes always challenging himself, no matter what the tournament. "Any tournament Im going to push myself," he said. "Im going to give it everything I have. Doesnt matter how much pain or anything I may ever be in, if its the smart choice, Im going to try to win and push myself as far as I can." ' ' '

nfl jerseys cheap . -- The Colorado Rapids have turned around their season. NEW YORK -- Major League Soccer hopes to place its next two expansion teams in Miami and Atlanta. "Were making progress in both of those markets. I wouldnt say were close," MLS Commissioner Don Garber said Tuesday ahead of this weekends championship game between Real Salt Lake and Sporting Kansas City. Former Manchester United, Real Madrid and Los Angeles Galaxy star David Beckham is leading the Miami effort and has the right to an expansion team at a discount fee of $25 million. "We are very excited about the opportunity of David putting together an ownership group and finalizing a stadium site in downtown Miami," Garber said. "We cant go to Miami without the right stadium solution. David understands that. The city understands that. That is an indisputable fact." New teams have been announced for 2015 in New York City and Orlando, Fla., increasing the leagues total to 21. MLS began with 10 teams in 1996, expanded to 12 and then contracted to 10 in 2002 when Miami and Tampa Bay were eliminated. "The Miami today demographically, socially, politically is very different from the Miami of 2002 where we folded the Miami Fusion," Garber said. "So we believe Miami could work if we get the right stadium situation. We dont have that yet." Falcons owner Arthur Blank heads the Atlanta venture, which would play at a new stadium for his NFL team, a venue scheduled to open in 2017. "Weve been working on a downsizing technology that we think would be unique, would be the only one of its kind anywhere in the world," Garber said. "Weve got to continue to work hard with Atlanta to see if this whole project makes sense for them. But I am encouraged by the discussions and hope to be able to finalize something." They would give the league 23 teams, one short of the leagues goal for 2020. Garber said Tuesday that Minneapolis, San Antonio, St. Louis and Austin, Texas, are among the possibilities for a 24th team. MLSs regular-season attendance average increased from 15,504 in 2006 to a record 18,807 last year before dropping slightly this season to 18,594. Garber said the league is spending more than $20 million annually on player development and must grow revenue. "Major League Soccer still loses money as an enterprise, and weve got to find a way that we can get closer to being a break-even enterprise," he said. The league receives an average of about $28 million annually from its national broadcast contracts with ESPN, NBC and Univision, which expiire after the 2014 season.dddddddddddd In the first season after Beckham left the Galaxy, regular-season ratings dropped from an average of 180,000 viewers to 170,000, according to Nielsen Media Research. However, viewers for the playoffs not including the final have increased from 240,000 to 270,000. "We did a heat map of the MLS broadcast schedule against that of the EPL, two other European leagues and the four other major leagues in this country, and you get dizzy looking at the MLS schedule," Garber said. "What we need to have is a consistent game of the week or games of the week that run from the beginning of year to the end of the year as much as we can at consistent times. And if that can be a Friday or a Saturday or a Sunday, that would be a positive." In its first season televising the English Premier League under a $250 million, three-year contract, NBCSN is averaging 429,000 for games televised in the U.S. mostly on weekend mornings. Nine games on NBC are averaging 788,000. "I think what NBC did for the Premier League is unprecedented in the history of pro sports. They really took the Premier League and made it as important as anything that was going on in the NBC Universal family, and its paying off in ratings and its certainly making economic sense for them," Garber said. "So if were able to create that kind of a scenario with a broadcaster, I think it would be beneficial for us." Garber also went into detail on the leagues examination of whether to switch its March-to-December schedule to the international calendar, which runs from August until May. MLS discussed playing from July until December, taking a break and finishing from late February until May. "Its not just about are we going to play a few more games in cold-weather markets at an earlier time of the year. Its about what do we do with an extended break, because I dont care what market it is, were not playing in February and in January in places like Toronto, Vancouver," he said. "We went through some fairly extensive discussions as a league to figure out if we could do this sometime in the future. It wouldnt have been for 14. But thats not something that were going to do in the short-term." He also promised more transparency in the leagues complex and opaque player control rules, which make if difficult at times to determine which teams control rights. "We are still evolving," he said. "and we still are doing some of this stuff on the fly." ' ' '

Kerry Fraser wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca! Hi Kerry, Regarding the goal scored by Matt Duchene in Mondays game between Nashville and Colorado, it seems that the referees didnt call the play offside because the puck was deflected by Scott Hannans stick and Craig Smiths left skate (both Predators players) into the Predators defensive zone, making it a back pass and thus no offside position should be considered. Barry Trotz said after the game, "The league already verified that it should have been an offside." Could you clarify what is to be considered a back pass into the defensive zone? Is a deflection by a defending player to be considered as such or not? Who do you think got it right: the officials on the ice or "the league?" Also, we see Barry Trotz strongly arguing with the referees after the play. Shouldnt only the captains be allowed to ask the referees about their interpetation of the play and call? Thank you for sharing your insight on all those rules issues that occur in our game. Gauthier Dupont Gauthier, The League did the right thing shortly after the game and issued a statement that the linesman erred in his interpretation of Rule 83.1 and the play should have been blown dead for the off-side at the Nashville blue line. The misinterpretation resulted from the very question of what constitutes a "back pass" as described in the last paragraph of Rule 83.1 - If a player legally carries or passes the puck back into his own defending zone while a player of the opposing team is in such defending zone, the off-side shall be ignored and play permitted to continue. The key word in the rule is "legally" as it applies to a defending player transporting the puck back into his own zone. The intent and spirit of the rule allows for situations where a player has possession and control of the puck and either cycles back into his defending zone or clearly passes the puck back toward a teammate within that zone. This player decision could be made to avoid a check in the neutral zone, to buy some time and maintain puck possession while other teammates are changing at the players bench or to regroup for an offensive attack through the neutral zone that might be clogged with traffic. For it to be determined that the puck was returned to the defending zone through a legal back pass, the player executing this pass must have full possession and control of the puck. In addition, any action by an attacking player that causes a deflection/rebound off a defending player in the neutral zone back into the defending zone (i.e. stick check, body check, physical contact), a delayed off-side shall be signalled by the linesman. A long stretch pass was intended for Colorado forward Matt Duchene as he snuck behind the Nashville defencemen. Scott Hannans desperation attempt to bat the puck down caused a redirection of the puck which then further deflected off the skate of Craig Smith. In both cases, this form of contact with the puck did not constitute possession or control by either of the two Nashville players. It would be no different had the puck been deflected off the shin guard or body of Hannan, followed by the skate of Smith which delayed the puck from crossing their blue line ahead of Matt Duchene. Off-side is the call! Barry Trotz was understandably upset with the linesmans ruling on this play. In an emotionally charged play such as this, the referee or linesman can go directly to the coach and offer his interpretation. I found that delivering the message directly to the coach at times such as this was far more effective than through the captain or alternate. Many of you will probably ask why one of the other officials on the ice didnt blow the whistle if they observed the obvious off-side play or if the goal could subsequently be disallowed following a group conference held with the linesman? Both are reasonable actions and alternatives to getting this play right. Let me provide you with my thoughts, references from the rules and final authority on the subject.dddddddddddd. First, let me say that the linesmen in the NHL are the best in the world at their trade. They make excellent judgments on extremely close plays that are executed at lightning speed. Replays almost always prove them correct. On very rare occasions, mistakes are made. Rule 31.4 says the "The referees shall not halt the game for any infractions of the rules concerning Rule 83 - Off-side, or any violation of Rule 81 - Icing. Determining infractions of these rules is the duty of the linesmen unless, by virtue of some accident, the linesman is prevented from doing so, in which case, the duties of the linesman shall be assumed by a referee until play is stopped." ("Accident" means being blocked out, bumped, fallen down or anything would cause the linesman to miss an off-side play.) At a training camp meeting a few years ago, the referees posed the question to allow for a referee to blow the whistle where an obvious off-side had been missed by a linesman. The flat out answer was only if the linesman is unable to make the call through one of the above reasons listed. Furthermore, the referees were told to lay off if the linesman made a wave-off signal which signified he saw the play and made a judgment on the play. If it was a wrong judgment, the linesmen were prepared to live with it no differently than a minor penalty missed by the referee! In certain situations, we often see the officials huddle at the referees crease to determine legitimate goals following potential goalkeeper interference, high-stick infractions where injury has resulted, high hits/illegal hits to the head and pucks shot out of play by the defending team from their defending zone. Conferences by the officials are designed to get the call right and the initial decision made by an official have been overturned through a meeting of the minds. By what authority, you might ask, would the goal be disallowed since Rule 83.4 states that, "Other than in situations involving a delayed off-side and the puck being shot on goal, no goal can be disallowed after the fact for an off-side violation, except for the human factor involved in blowing the whistle." I would suggest that a conference by the officials would have been well served and justified in this case since it was a rule interpretation error and not a visual judgment error made by the linesman on the blue line which the spirit of the above rule implies. When a linesman has made an error on icing for any reason, the face-off is taken to centre ice without question. If through a conference of the officiating crew, it was determined that the puck was deflected by the Nashville players and not through any "back pass" of the puck, I believe the call could be reversed and the goal disallowed. Finally, I provide Rule 31.2 and 31.4 as the final authority with regard to disputes in a broad sense. 31.2—Disputes: The referees shall have general supervision of the game and shall have full control of all game officials and players during the game, including stoppages; and in case of any dispute, their decision shall be final. 31.4—General Duties: It shall be the duty of the referees to impose such penalties as are prescribed by the rules for infractions thereof and they shall give the final decision in matter of disputed goals. The referees may consult with the linesmen, goal judge or video goal judge before making their decision. I am hopeful that a consultation by the officiating crew would have determined an error in rule interpretation on the play and an announcement made that, "It was determined by the officials that an off-side had occurred at the blue line and the goal has been disallowed." I doubt if there will be confusion in the future on what constitutes legally carrying or back passing the puck by a defending player into his end zone. Perhaps it wouldnt hurt to add this and similar situations to the growing list of allowable officials conferences at the penalty box to determine the legal scoring of a goal. Barry Trotz and the Nashville Preds would be in full agreement. ' ' '

Going into the game in New Jersey you could call this Jets road trip "finding a way to win." A late goal in Philadelphia for the win, a late goal to tie and then a shootout win in Florida, then great goal tending by Ondre Pavelec for the win on Long Island. The game against the Devils would go down as "found a way to get a point." When you are down 2-0 to the Devils going into the third, chances are you are done. The Devils are as good a defencive team as there is in the league. Especially with Martin Brodeur in goal. But Mark Flood with his first NHL goal, and Jim Slater (assist to Flood) at 17:15 of the third earned the Jets a point. The Devils did win in overtime, but the point gives the Jets 7 of a possible 10 points on the 7 game road trip. Next up, the New York Rangers on Sunday. (TSN Jets, TSN 1290 6PM central) Nik Antropov was a late scratch for the Jets, so the not dressed list went like this: Stuart, Hainsey, Meech, Jones, Fehr, Enstrom, Antropov, Mason. So as much as they were disappointed with the loss, when you consider everything, take the point and move on against the Rangers. Antropov and Stuart are outside possibilities for Sunday. Paul Postman was called up to join Flood and Brett Festerling on the blue line. Another good night for Bryan Little in the face off department, winning 16 or 23. Alexander Burmistrov won 12 of 17 as the Jets ended the night at 71%. "I like the way we fought back from 2 down because the Devils dont give you much," stated coach Claude Noel after the game. "In the end we made a mistake and it was in our net." Zac Bogosian lead the Jets in ice time at 26:25. With Antropov out Blake Wheeler moved up the Burmistrov and Evander Kane.

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Timberwolves sent Kevin Love off to NBA All-Star weekend with a complete performance and a critical win. The Denver Nuggets played as though they were already relaxing on a tropical beach. Love started practicing early for All-Star festivities, making six of 11 shots from 3-point range and totalling 32 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists to lead the Timberwolves to a 117-90 victory over the Nuggets on Wednesday night. "Its always a tough game before the break to come out with a lot of energy, and we did," Love said. "We were excited to play. We knew we needed a win." Love, chosen as a first-time starter for the Western Conference team, will also take part in the 3-point shooting contest this weekend in New Orleans. In five February games, Love has averaged 32.6 points. He sat last week because of a stiff neck, and then with a bruised left quadriceps, but his banged-up body hasnt hindered his production when he is on the court. "I was pretty sore before the game still, but once we got going I felt good," Love said. "I was definitely happy we got the large lead, and I really, really needed to sit down those last eight minutes." Corey Brewer added 22 points, J.J. Barea pitched in 18 points on 8-for-8 shooting, and Ricky Rubio had 11 points, 12 assists and a season-high seven steals for the Wolves, who had coach Rick Adelman back on the sideline. He missed the previous game on Monday, an absence he said was related to his wifes health. The Wolves, still missing Nikola Pekovic (right ankle bursitis) and Kevin Martin (broken left thumb) stopped a four-game losing streak. "We needed a game like that after having a tough stretch," Rubio said. The curmudgeon coach wasnt quite satisfied, calling timeout at one point in the second quarter when a turnover gave the Nuggets a fast-break dunk off a lob pass from Randy Foye to Jordan Hamilton. That cut the lead to 47-29. "I dont know, 40 would be nice to be ahead by," Adelman said. "Id relax then. We have a tendency to give up points quickly." The Wolves trail eighth-place Phoenix by six games. Hamilton led the Nuggets with 16 points and seven assists, and J.J. Hickson added 14 points and 13 rebounds. Reeling from injuries, the Nuggets (24-27) have dropped nine of 13 and four games in a row to fall behind the Wolves (25-28) and into 11th place. "Theres really only one thing to say, and thats thank God for the All-Star break," coach Brian Shaw said. Foye, forced into a point guard role because Ty Lawson and Nate Robinson are out, said he has been playing with a strained hamstring. He then sustained a nerve injury in his leg. "It was extremely painful, but I fought through it," said Foye, who inadvertently elbowed Rubio in the chin in the first quarter. Rubio returned after receiving five stitches. The Nuggets, who have given up the third-most points per game, left shooters open all over the court. The Wolves made them pay with 52.3 per cent shooting from the floor and 20 fast-break points. "Were getting torched by everybody from the beginning of the game to the end of the game," Shaw said. The Wolves were ahead 19-3 before the Nuggets were even warmed up, and they built their lead as big as 61-37 late in the second quarter on a 3-pointer by Chase Budinger, who finished with 12 points. The Nuggets never came closer than 17 points after halftime. Brewer had an uncontested dunk and then caught another laser-like outlet pass from Love like a wide receiver streaking down the football field. Brewers twisting layup rolled off the rim, but Rubio stole the ball right back for another try that Brewer converted for a 98-64 lead. "It all starts with defence," Hickson said. "If you look at the top teams in the league, all of them are top five or top 10 in defence, and thats not us right now." NOTES: Adelman has no special plans for the All-Star break. "Im just going to sit here and watch the snow," he said. Pekovic will be ice fishing again, but Adelman expressed no interest, only a bit of advice: "I hope he puts his foot in the water and ices it a little bit." ... Hickson has a double-double in 16 of the last 29 games. ... Martin said his hope is to be cleared to play on the five-game trip that starts Feb. 22. He will be re-evaluated the day before.

cheap stitched jerseys .J. -- Mark Sanchez is still the New York Jets quarterback of the future. Those 36-year-old legs of Manu Ginobilis have been feeling pretty spry this season. That spring in his step that had been missing for so much of last season was back, helping the Argentine magician become a game-changer again for the San Antonio Spurs. So when the lane opened up in the third quarter Tuesday night against the Houston Rockets, Ginobili decided to go for it. He rose up, cradled the ball in his left hand and threw down a solid, one-handed dunk. And with that, Ginobili joined the growing list of injured Spurs. The team said Wednesday that Ginobili strained his left hamstring on the dunk and will miss the next three to four weeks. Ginobili joins Danny Green (broken finger), Kawhi Leonard (broken left hand) and Tiago Splitter (sprained right shoulder) on the teams injured list, a run of bad luck that has torn apart the teams depth, particularly on the wing. "You play the guys on the bench," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "We cant play the guys on the other team. I know that." The team is hopeful Splitter, who hasnt played since Jan. 4, will return in time for the teams annual rodeo road trip, a 10-game stint that begins Monday in New Orleans. That would help out Tim Duncan and the big men up front, but the problems on the perimeter remain. After struggling for much of last season, Ginobili signed a two-year contract to remain in San Antonio. He has rebounded this season to resume his role as the Spurs playmaker off the bench, averaging 12.1 points, 4.5 assists and shooting 52 per cent on his 2-point shots. During a monthlong stretch from the middle of December to the middle of January, Ginobili scored at least 20 points five times in a 16-game span to help the Spurs once again establish themselves among the NBAs elite teams. Hes been pretty healthy as well, missing two games earlier in January because of a sore left hamstring before injuring it more severely on Tuesday night.dddddddddddd Ginobili, who has long been the emotional centre of this close-knit team, was dejected as he limped off the court. His injury puts even more responsibility on the shoulders of veteran Marco Belinelli, who has been a reliable shooter in a supporting role after coming over in free agency from the Chicago Bulls. Belinelli is averaging 10.9 points and shooting 46.7 per cent from 3-point range for the Spurs. With the injuries to Leonard and Green, Belinelli had become a starter on the wing and seen his playing time steadily increase. Belinelli played 38 minutes in the loss to Houston, and the Spurs recently signed NBDL standout Othyus Jeffers to a 10-day contract to give them another warm body on the perimeter. Thanks in large part to Ginobilis return to form, the Spurs entered Wednesdays game against the Bulls at 33-12, good for second place in the hyper-competitive Western Conference. But theyve lost three of their last four games, are 1-11 against the top seven teams in the league and now face the daunting challenge of that long road trip without Ginobili, and with Portland (33-13) and the Clippers (32-15) right on their heels. Chicago is facing its own injuries woes. All-Star point guard Derrick Rose was lost for the season with a knee injury for the second consecutive year and starting centre Joakim Noah (illness) and guard Kirk Hinrich (right hamstring) are game-time decisions for tonights game against San Antonio. So, Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said he has little empathy for the Spurs, not because Chicago is also battling injuries, but because of how deep San Antonio is. "Its the nature of the league. Its the grind of an 82-game season. Youre going to take injuries on. Its how you respond and the Spurs have always done a good job with that. Its the way the Spurs are built." ' ' '

MOSCOW -- Two-time Grand Slam champion Svetlana Kuznetsova beat Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden 6-2, 7-5 to make the Kremlin Cup quarterfinals for the sixth time on Wednesday. Meanwhile, mens defending champion Andreas Seppi broke Paolo Lorenzi twice in the second set to win the all-Italian second-round match 6-3, 6-2, and 2011 champ Janko Tipsarevic lost to Russian wild card Karen Khachanov 6-4, 6-4. Kuznetsova, ranked 23rd, overcame an early break in the second set and earned the victory on her third match point against Arvidsson, a semifinalist last year. "I was more relaxed on the court today, yet I was hurrying a bit and wanted to play more aggressive, thus making more mistakes," Kuznetsova said. "But I can say that now, at the end of the season, I am playing much better." She missed Wimbledon, among several tournaments in midseason, because of an abdominal injury. She will try to reach the semifinals for only the second time in Moscow when she faces second-seeded Roberta Vinci of Italy, who beat Elena Vesnina 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 after a first-round bye. Vesnina, who won her first two singles titles this season, broke twice in the opening set. But Vinci broke the Russian three times in the second to force a decider. The 11th-ranked Italian broke decisively in the seventh game and served out. Samantha Stosur opened her account by beating Kaia Kanepi of Estonia 6-3, 6-1. Stosur, coming off her second title this season and fifth of her career, converted four of 11 break opportunities. "I played really well and Kaia was a really dangerous opponent," Stosur said. "I really tried to start the match well, on top." Last years runner-up, Stosur has Alize Cornet of France next. Meanwhile, the 17-year-old Khachanov advanced to his first career ATP quarterfinals in hitting 14 aces past third-seeded Tipsarevic. Playing his fourth tour match, Khachanov broke Tipsarevic once in each set and didnt offer a break chance. "It was a tight match. I was trying but Karen didnt give many chances on his serve," Tipsarevic said. "Two chances he had on my serve he broke me. He plays really well for his age and if he improves his fitness he has all the potential to become a very good player." Earlier, Alisa Kleybanova advanced to her first quarterfinals since being treated for cancer, beating the sixth-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain 7-6 (2), 6-4. The Russian was ranked as high as 20th, but after missing much of the last two seasons because of her illness is now 254th. She resumed her career in May and won a challenger before returning to the tour in Toronto in August. "I always liked to play with Carla and I knew it would be a tough match," Kleybanova said. "But I think that today I played more accurate on key moments and thats why I won." Kleybanova was diagnosed with blood cancer and underwent chemotherapy until December 2011. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who is looking for her third title this year, beat Russian compatriot Maria Kirilenko 6-3, 6-3.

Patrick Marleau scored and Antti Niemi stopped 21-of-23 shots for the Sharks. Marleau has four goals and five points over a five-game point streak, while Logan Couture has logged seven points over a five-game run of his own. The Blues have won six of their past seven versus the Sharks overall, including two of three meetings last season. San Jose has scored more than two goals just once in that span. St. Louis has won three of its last four at home in this series. Halak is 4-2-0 with a pair of shutouts and a 2.30 goals against average in seven meetings with the Sharks. Niemi is 5-6-0 with a 2.57 GAA in 12 lifetime encounters with the Blues. ' ' '

Day One of the 2011 NHL free agent season showed a variety of different approaches as teams tried to buy themselves a brighter future. While the catch of the day - Brad Richards - remains unhooked, most teams were quick to snatch up other pieces that could immediately improve their rosters. The Philadelphia Flyers may have made the biggest splash of the day, landing Jaromir Jagr after he seemed destined for their cross-state rivals in Pittsburgh. They were able to outbid teams like Pittsburgh and Detroit, inking him to a one-year, $3.3-million deal. The Flyers, who have drastically re-shaped their team in the past week thanks to dealing Mike Richards and Jeff Carter, wouldnt stop there. They would then sign one of the Penguins biggest role-players in gritty forward Maxime Talbot to a five-year, $9-million deal. "It could be a very good fit," said TSN hockey analyst Darren Pang. "They have a group of high-end, highly skilled defencemen that can get him the puck in the right places, he can be effective on the power-play and theres lots of power-play time to be had right now without Mike Richards or Jeff Carter." All the Flyers additions came at the expense of one of their key contributors from last season. Backed by new owner Terry Pegula, Buffalo flexed its newfound financial muscle and scooped Philadelphias fifth-leading scorer from last season, Ville Leino. After years of losing key players to the open market, Buffalo found itself dropping big money - $27 million over six years - and luring one of the bigger names available this off-season. "Its been long overdue," said TSN hockey analyst Pierre McGuire. "Now they actually get to keep their own players, trade for some bigger players and make their team better." The big spending was kicked off before the clock even struck noon, however, as the Columbus Blue Jackets made James Wisniewski Canada Days big winner. After acquiring his negotiating right from Montreal on Wednesday, Columbus locked the tough defender in to a six-year, $33-million deal. "This really puts an identity into the Columbus Blue Jackets," Pang said. "Now your top lines going to be Jeff Carter with Rick Nash and R.J. Umberger. The Central Divisions awfully tough, but the Blue Jackets made a real good step here." The Canadian teams, meanwhile, took vastly different approaches. Montreal opted to drop some big bucks of their own, adding big winger Erik Cole. He didnt come cheap, at $16-million over four years, but the Canadiens added a key piece to their attack in Cole. "They really had to address their lack of size up front and their lack of speed with big people up front," said McGuire "Now they (have that) with Erik Cole". The party line in Vancouver, meanwhile, was tinkering with the line-up in hopes of turning themselves from number-one contenders into champions. They would keep a couple core pieces in Sami Salo and Christ Higgins, while adding veteran forward Marco Sturm. "I think they identified - as the playoffs wore on - that you need to have depth," Pang said. "You need to have guys that can slide into top-nine, top-six roles. I think theyve done a nice job of re-tooling for next year." Their roster would not go untouched, however, as they lost agitator Tanner Glass just a day after Buffalo locked Christian Erhoff into a mammoth 10-year, $40-million deal. Edmonton added some grind to its forward ranks, signing Eric Belanger out of Phoenix and San Joses Ben Eager. Edmonton went a slightly less conventional route in shoring up its back end. On the same day he was bought out by Minnesota, Edmonton would snatch up former top-three pick Cam Barker to a one-year, $2.25-million deal. "The defence is getting better, but theyre still a long way away," said McGuire. "They still need to make some major upgrades back there." Ottawa, Winnipeg and Calgary would make small moves of their own. Ottawa inked back-up keeper Alex Auld. Calgary would lock down recently-acquired blue-liner Chris Butler. Winnipeg, meanwhile, added depth with its first unrestricted signings in Tanner Glass and Derek Meech. The Leafs, though, would keep silent throughout Day One. Going all-in in their pursuit of a number-one centre, they dedicated all their efforts on trying to lure Brad Richards north. "They made their pitch to Brad Richards, and thats the risk you run when you put all your eggs in that basket," said former NHLer Mike Johnson. "While you wait for Brad Richards to make that decision, youre on the backburner for a lot of other guys, potential other free agents you might want to sign." With a decision from Richards not expected until Saturday, the effectiveness of the Leafs Day One strategy remains to be seen.

AUBURN, Ala. -- Auburn tailback Tre Mason, who helped power the Tigers into the national championship game, is skipping his senior season to enter the NFL draft. "It was a dream since I was young," Mason said Thursday in announcing his decision. "Im a dream chaser, and now Im just trying to make a dream into reality." The Heisman Trophy finalist was the Tigers workhorse late in the season, coming through in the seasons biggest games. "It was a big dream of mine," Mason said. "I wanted the ball bad, and I felt I could do something with the ball in my hand." Mason, who finished sixth in the Heisman voting, is projected as a likely mid-round draft pick. The 5-foot-10, 205-pounder said he received a third-round grade from the NFL draft advisory board. Third-year sophomore left tackle Greg Robinson is also headed to the NFL. Mason broke Bo Jacksons 28-year-old school single-season record with 1,816 yards. He also ran for 24 touchdowns and finished with six consecutive 100-yard rushing games. "He did a wonderful job for us not only this year, but really his whole career," said Auburn coach Gus Malzahn, who recruited Mason when he was offensive co-ordinator. "Not just the way he played football but the way he represented Auburn. "This is a big day for him and his family. This is a big day for Auburn, so Im very proud of him." Mason rushed for 195 yards and scored two touchdowns in Monday nights BCS championship game against Florida State Monday night. His tackle-breaking 37-yard run with 1:19 left gave the Tigers the lead before losing 34-31. Once regarded as an undersized, speed back, Mason averaged 34 carries and 194.5 yards over the final four games. He ran 46 times for 304 yards and four touchdowns in the Southeastern Conference championship game against Missouri. Malzahn called Mason "one of the tougher individuals in all of college football." "He can run between the tackles, hes got great courage, he plays his best games in his biggest games, and hes a good receiver out of the backfield also," the coach said. Mason was asked what kind of running back the team that drafts him will get. "I feel like theyll get somebody thats a hard worker, willing to do whatever it takes to win," he said. "My minds not just set on money, its set on championships. I have yet to win a championship, and my mind-sets not going to change. God willing, Ill win a championship at the next level."

The NHLs Mar. 5 Trade Deadline is drawing closer and teams will be deciding on whether to buy or sell. Check out todays trade-related reports and speculation from around the NHL beat. And follow TSN.ca through Deadline Day for all the updates. Keep it Kul? With the Toronto Maple Leafs having cleared a bit of cap room by dealing Mark Fraser to the Oilers on Friday, reports are now shifting towards their willingness to move a bigger roster piece. TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger reported on Insider Trading Friday night that the Leafs have informed teams that theyre willing to move Nikolai Kulemin. Dreger notes, however, that this isnt simply getting rid of salary to make some room for the return of Dave Bolland. The Leafs would need a substantial return, including a player and not just a draft pick. No offers have been tabled yet that make sense for the Leafs, according to Dreger. A Leg Up Kevin Allen of USA Today posted a list of the 10 most intriguing potential trade targets to watch before the deadline and while the list was populated with the usual collection of potentially-available names – Matt Moulson, Dan Girardi, Ales Hemsky and so on – he did bring up another interesting possibility. Tucked away as an honourable mention, Allen suggests that David Legwand would be a fit for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Legwand does have a no-trade clause, as Allen notes, but could he be persuaded to leave Nashville for the first time since he is in the last year of his contract? The 33-year-old has never seen a Conference Final and with Pascal Dupuis out for the year with a torn ACL, the Pens may have both the cash and the need for a player like Legwand. Captain for Hire? Friday was a busy day in the rumor mill for New York Rangers captain Ryan Callahan, with talk of a potential swap with St. Louis front and centre. With reports that at least one team has been given permission to speak with Callahans agent, the possibility of the 28-year-old getting dealt before Mar. 5 seems to be increasing. The key motivator behind the rumours appears to be Callahans expectations for his next contract. Dreger commented that “unless his contract demands soften, theres a 100 per cent chance that hes getting traded by the New York Rangers. Theyre not paying him what hes asking.

Weiss went 74-88, a 10-game improvement over the previous season, after leaving his head coaching job at Regis Jesuit High School last fall. He managed on a one-year deal with the Rockies in 2013 after Jim Tracy stepped down following a 64-98 season in 2012. Now, there are no more questions about his security. "I think it comes down to stability -- stability for a club, from the players perspective, that a manger is going to be around," Weiss said. "They know the manager is going to be there and hes the guy running the club. I think theres something to be said for that." Weiss said hes close to filling the hitting instructors job that Dante Bichette left for family reasons and is leaning toward following the trend in baseball and use two coaches in that role. He also said the rest of his coaching staff will return in 2014. Colorado hung around and wass just 4 1/2 games behind Los Angeles at the All-Star break before the Dodgers and Rockies went in different directions.dddddddddddd After a free-fall, they went 22-24 over their final 46 games, giving them hope for a turnaround next season behind starting pitchers Jorge De La Rosa, Jhoulys Chacin and Tyler Chatwood and the core of Troy Tulowitzki, Carlos Gonzalez, Dexter Fowler, Michael Cuddyer, Nolan Arenado and Wilin Rosario. "I like the way our guys competed down the stretch, when we looked like we were out of it. Our guys still played really hard ... playing to the last out of every game, the last out of the season. For me, that was a bright spot," Weiss said. He said the Rockies need to play better on the road next season. They won just 29 games away from Coors Field. A former All-Star shortstop, Weiss spent 14 seasons in the major leagues, including four seasons with the Rockies in the 1990s. He also spent seven seasons, from 2002-08, as a special assistant to the general manager with the Rockies. ' ' '

PHOENIX -- San Antonio guard Manu Ginobili was an irritant for Phoenix long before any of the current Suns arrived in the desert. He did it again on Wednesday night. The 36-year-old Ginobili scored 11 of his 24 points in the final four-plus minutes, and the Spurs snapped the Suns five-game winning streak with a 108-101 victory. Phoenixs Channing Frye said hes seen Ginobili do this sort of thing "a trillion times." "Its like a bad nightmare," he said. "Hes absolutely amazing. He just does a good job of continuing to push. I thought he was getting tired there at the end. Obviously, I was wrong." Tim Duncan added 17 points and 13 rebounds and Kawhi Leonard scored 14 for the Spurs, who played without point guard Tony Parker after he bruised a shin in Monday nights loss to the Clippers in Los Angeles. Frye scored 15 of his 22 points in the first quarter. Goran Dragic had 18 points and Eric Bledsoe 15, but the two Phoenix guards were a combined 12 of 33 from the field. Miles Plumlee added 13 points and 13 rebounds. Led by Ginobili, the Spurs outscored the Suns 15-6 over the final 4:11 after Phoenix used a 10-0 run to take a 95-93 lead on Plumlees rebound basket with 5:10 to go. "These guys are a good team," Phoenix coach Jeff Hornacek said, praising San Antonios resiliency. "It doesnt matter if guys are out of the lineup." Ginobili had a tying tip-in, and then made a 3-pointer to put San Antonio ahead for good at 98-95 with 2:58 to play. San Antonio put it out of reach when Ginobili sank a 10-footer from the baseline, and then stole the ball at the other end and made two free throws to make it 104-97 with 47.5 seconds remaining. "Down the stretch I thought we did look like a veteran team," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. Ginobili, who also had seven assists, six rebounds and five turnovers, gave himself a so-so grade. "I played pretty well," he said. "I turned the ball over too much but in general the minutes I played I scored well and I moved the ball. I think I did OK. Im very happy that I helped the team win because we are in a tough stretch. We lost the last one, we have a tough back-to-back without Tony and then Oklahoma City." Parker will miss Thursday nights game at Golden State and its uncertain whether he will be able to play when the Spurs host the Thunder on Saturday. Leonards 3-pointer gave San Antonio its first lead at 46-45. There were five lead changes the rest of the first half, with San Antonio up 59-58 at the break. With 4 seconds left in the third, Dragic was fouled while heaving a shot from just past midcourt and Popovich drew a technical complaining about the call. That gave Dragic four free throws. He made three to cut San Antonios lead to 87-81 entering the fourth quarter. Consecutive baskets by Marco Belinelli and Patty Mills put San Antonio ahead 93-85 with 8:30 to go before Markieff Morris three-point play ignited the Suns 10-0 run. "We know that we can play well against good teams," Dragic said. "We are a young team and we have to learn a lot, especially in these types of games where, in the last three or four minutes, you have to close out the game, and I think we can get there." NOTES: Parker has returned to San Antonio for treatment. ... San Antonio has not lost two in a row this season. ... Popovich is the only NBA coach whose tenure dates to Hornaceks playing days. ... Bledsoe was 1-for-8 shooting in the fourth quarter. ... Entering the game, Duncans career minutes (42,064) were 37 more than the 13 players on Phoenixs active roster combined. ... Phoenix has not won six in a row in three years.

SELANGOR, Malaysia -- Bo Van Pelt birdied five of the last eight holes for a seven-under 64 to win the Asia Pacific Classic by six strokes over fellow American Jeff Overton on Sunday. Van Pelt, the winner of the PGA Tours 2009 U.S. Bank Championship in Milwaukee, finished at 23-under 261 at Malaysias Mines Resort and Golf Club, bettering the previous tournament record by two strokes. He earned US$1.3 million from the $6.1 million purse, the biggest payday of his career. His previous best tournament winnings was $720,000. "I played well all day, didnt have any bogeys," the 36-year-old said. "I had a couple of chances to win this year but didnt come on them. It was a tough pill to swallow and learn to do a better job when I got the lead. I take great satisfaction on how I played today." Van Pelt had a one-stroke lead over Overton going into the final round of the second-year event sanctioned by the U.S. PGA Tour and Asian Tour. He pulled away with birdies on Nos. 13-15, hitting within a foot on the par-4 13th and par-3 14th and holing a four-footer on the short par-4 15th after driving into a greenside bunker. He added a two-putt birdie on the par-5 17th. Overton shot a 69, but bogeyed the fourth, 12th and 13th holes to wipe out his hopes for a first-ever U.S. PGA Tour victory. Fredrik Jacobson had a 68 to finish third at 16 under, and Cameron Tringale (64), Camilo Villegas (66) and Mark Wilson (69) were 15 under.

Jeff Francis tossed five solid innings and four relievers combined to shut out Philadelphia the rest of the way Thursday night in the Rockies 4-1 victory over the Phillies.ST. LOUIS -- Before hiring Gregg Williams as his defensive co-ordinator for the second time, St. Louis Rams coach Jeff Fisher cleared it with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. Williams was part of Fishers first staff with the Rams in 2012, but only for a few weeks before getting suspended for his role in the Saints bounty scandal. After a news conference to introduce Williams Thursday, Fisher said hed been in contact with Goodell throughout the process two years ago and "I wanted to inform him about the direction I was thinking about going." "He was very excited, and he endorsed it." Before signing Williams, Fisher said the two spent a few days revisiting the 2012 experience. The suspension left the Rams in a bind and they went without a co-ordinator in 12. Fisher said then that the suspension was "warranted" and asked if hed consider Williams in the future said hed "cross that bridge when we come to it." After the 2012 season he fired Williams son, defensive line coach Blake Williams. During his suspension, Williams had no contact with the Rams but said he attended all of the home games. He was a defensive assistant last year at Tennessee and called it a "good stop." "His handprint was all over the Tennessee defence, it was obvious that hed gone in there and had a significant impact," Fisher said. "Id say 60-70 per cent of our terminology is his. I just really felt strongly about just pulling together." Fisher initiated contact a few weeks after the season ended, and believes hed surprised Williams. He made room by firing Tim Walton after one season, telling Walton hed done nothing wrong but that Williams had been his first choice. The 55-year-old Williams was defensive co-ordinator under Fisher with the Titans from 1997-2000. "Things are in perspective, things are behind him, his past is his past," Fisher said. "The arrows going up with the defence and I just felt like Gregg was the person to make sure that happens." Williams shed no light on the discussions, saying "Those are things that are between Jeff and I." He deflected a question about how hes changedd as a coach since his suspension, saying every coach must adjust, but thought the familiarity would make this a good fit.dddddddddddd "Its fun to be back with people who think and believe the same way you are," Williams said. "So now you get a chance to spend more time with the players, because youre spending less time having to sell or defend yourself with your staff before you ever get with the players." Fisher said the hire got a big thumbs-up from players, adding "my phone was blowing up." Middle linebacker James Laurinaitis, who was at Rams Park for a workout, anticipates a more aggressive approach. The Rams have one of the NFLs top pass rushes but enter free agency and the draft needy in the secondary. "Win or lose, I want to know that were going to go down swinging," Laurinaitis said. "Everyone Ive known that has played for him just absolutely loves the guy." Williams, who grew up in Missouri, said he hoped this was his last coaching stop. Williams scoffed at a claim from a player who said the coach bragged about using a stolen playbook to help Tennessee beat Jacksonville in the 1999 AFC championship game. Williams called the allegation by former Jaguars defensive end Renaldo Wynn "a joke" and added he had every teams playbook. "Every time a free agent walks in a building, he gives you the playbook," Williams said. "We all have everybodys playbook. When you turn the film on, do you have their playbook? "How much traction did Omaha get when Peyton (Manning) said Omaha 46 times one game on TV? Whats that mean? It doesnt mean anything." Williams said hes watched all of the Rams games from last season but declined to discuss specific needs. Fisher wants his new co-ordinator to concentrate on improving a defence that was ranked 15th overall. "I told Gregg this time around hes going to be the mad scientist," Fisher said. "Hes not going to do a lot of player evaluations, Im not going to take up his time evaluating unrestricted free agents and getting ready for the draft. "I want him to take this defence and run with it." ' ' '

JERSEY CITY, N.J. -- The Seattle Seahawks were focused on turnovers -- creating them on defence and not making them on offence -- at Super Bowl practice Thursday. It was "Turnover Thursday" for Pete Carrolls team, an approach that has worked well for the Seahawks this season. Seattles stingy defence led the NFL with 39 takeaways, a fact Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos are well aware of. Quarterback Russell Wilson prefers to call the 90-minute session "No-Turnover Thursday" for the offence, which doesnt want to give the Broncos any extra opportunities with fumbles or interceptions. "Turnover Thursday" followed "Competition Wednesday," a game-like practice session in which the Seahawks run a live scrimmage that includes a play clock.

The Montreal Canadiens may be in the thick of the Atlantic Division playoff race but that might not mean they wont look to move some players out before the deadline. The Montreal Gazette speculates that defenceman Raphael Diaz could be a contract casualty before Mar. 5, as the Swiss puck-mover is a pending unrestricted free agent. Diaz – who has 11 assists through 46 games this season could get priced out of Montreal, whose top priority of the summer will likely be getting P.K. Subbans name down on another contract. No Jackets Required The Columbus Blue Jackets enter Saturdays games with a hold on the third playoff spot in the Metropolitan Division, despite having none of their players listed amongst the NHLs top 50 scorers. Could that pave the way for them to add an impact scorer before the deadline? The Hockey News speculates that the Jackets – a team with good depth bothh on their NHL roster as well as in their prospect pool – could be a team to watch on the trade front in the coming weeks.dddddddddddd The Jackets have one of the NHLs deepest prospect pools and could potentially afford to part with their first round pick in Junes draft, netminder Oscar Dansk or even one of the three players they took in the first round of the 2013 NHL Draft like Alexander Wennberg or Kerby Rychel in search of the right offensive upgrade. Hockey News Writer Ken Campbell warns, however, that with a team performing at such a high level (see: their current eight-game winning streak) as a collective may be best left as it is. Do the Bart Man The Bruins could still be looking to upgrade their D in the wake of the season-ending injury to Dennis Seidenberg last month. Bartkowski is no stranger to the rumour mill, however, as he was reportedly part of the package the Bruins offered up just a year ago in efforts to get Jarome Iginla out of Calgary. ' ' '
