Defending champion Ryder Hesjedal of Victoria

March 6th, 2014 at 06:48 am

Greetings folks! Here are five thoughts on the NBA for today. 1. Mario Chalmers (Heat) - Saw him yesterday in Miami. He has become a very effective three-point shooter (over 45 per cent) and has the confidence of the Big Three. Hes open on the perimeter - they give it to him. With Mike Miller and Shane Battier not shooting with consistency the Heat need Chalmers to stay hot to keep good offensive spacing and make opponents pay for doubling up on their stars. 2. Kevin Love (TWolves) - Lost his cool with Luis Scola over the weekend and gets suspended for two games. Hes a tough guy and terrific competitor yet hes a clean player. He surprised me when he did it. Havent seen that edge to his personality. His team is playing well at 12-12. Put that team in the Eastern Conference and theyre making even more noise. Keep your cool and keep producing - team needs you - dont get baited. 3. Jose Calderon (Raptors) - Received some comments about the fact that he didnt play in fourth quarter vs. Heat. Jerryd Bayless ran the team. Still has a ways to go with his point guard and decision-making skills. Calderon had five turnovers in the game which is unusual for him. He had 17 assists and almost a triple-double in the previous game. Hell be fine. Hes played well for them and I read nothing into it whatsoever. Just a coach going with the hot hand that day. Hes an important and respected piece of the puzzle. 4. Raptors on Road - Toronto plays their 17th road game here in Washington D.C. this evening. Amazing. Will be done with more than half their road games with two-and-a-half months to go in the season. Should allow for more stability, practice time, teaching and rest. That should help. Wins? Who knows, but I think their quality of play should/will improve. 5. LeBron James (Heat) - Was very impressed with the added post skills that I saw from him on Sunday in Miami. Been watching that this season from him and I must say, I love it. This development is huge for his game and he must continue to go to it. With his size, quickness, strength, skill and footwork he can become an unstoppable force in the lane. Dont get cute - overpower people every chance you get.
